Beauty is a funny thing. Once I get to know someone, I find it really difficult to judge their ‘beauty’; to figure out how someone meeting them for the first time sees them. Because – cliché or not – how you perceive someone you are familiar with really does have so much to do with their personality and how you feel about them. Use the leaves in roasts, stews and curries.

WHERE TO PLANT

Herbs need plenty of sunshine – a minimum of four hours of direct sun a day. Plant them near your kitchen door so it’s easy to pick as you cook.

PREPARATION

Well-drained soil is essential, so dig plenty of organic matter and compost into your herb bed. Ensure containers have drainage holes, then cover the base with a layer of stones, broken bricks or drainage chips before adding a mix of compost and soil. Old sponges are good too – they hold water.

WHEN TO PLANT

August is a good time to plant herb seeds such as parsley and chives to give them a good start for summer. In colder areas, wait until the frosts are over in September, or plant into seed trays and then transplant them as seedlings. Perennials such as rosemary, origanum and thyme can be planted as young plants at any time, but protect them from frost.

MAINTENANCE

Water regularly, but let the surface 2cm of soil dry out between waterings, as herbs don’t like soggy feet. This might mean watering every day in hot weather, and once or twice a week in cold weather. Feed with an organic liquid fertiliser once a month; twice a month for containers. Since too much fertiliser makes herbs soft and leggy, dilute it to half the recommended strength.

Lemons have great cleaning properties. Citric acid kills bacteria and mould, so rub germy surfaces like stainlesssteel kitchen sinks and taps with half a lemon sprinkled with salt, and they’ll shine! Shine up brass and copper items by dampening a sponge with lemon juice, sprinkling it with salt and rubbing it lightly over the surface. Rinse and dry immediately. women everywhere with their promise to flush out toxins, jumpstart weight loss, clear skin and tap new energy. But these extreme programmes can be unhealthy and angry-making. (Just try being nice when your last ‘meal’ was lemon juice with cayenne pepper.) We do accumulate toxins, says nutrition expert Dr Melina Jampolis. ‘But our body is built to cleanse itself constantly. The way you live has a more profound impact than any fast fix.’ Follow this advice and you’ll never sip your dinner through a straw. 42


TRICK #1 Start your day with warm water and lemon… ‘Sleep is dehydrating,’ says nutrition expert Dr Zelana Montminy. She and other experts suggest warm water, because it’s less taxing on the system than cold and helps flush the kidneys, and lemon juice, which can help balance pH levels and aid digestion. ‘The acidity stimulates the liver to produce acids that aid in further detoxification,’ Montminy says.

TRICK #5 Bend, twist, touch your toes ‘Twisting and turning the body increases blood flow and lymphatic drainage, enhancing detoxification,’ says nutrition expert Dr Susan Lord. A twist to try at work: sit facing forwards, turn to the right and grab the top of your chair with your right hand, turning your body as far as you can in that direction. Then switch sides. Bending over to touch your toes also has cleansing benefits. Letting your head fall below your heart encourages circulation – also important for detoxification.

TRICK #6 Just add greens

Even the way you breathe can help decrease the build-up of toxins. ‘Deep breathing eliminates toxins 15 times faster than shallow breathing,’ says Kathe Burlage, a yoga instructor who trains cancer survivors. Stay particularly focused on your breathing during mealtimes, especially before you eat. Take three deep breaths before you tuck in.

‘I urge my clients not to count kilojoules but to count vegetables – that’s how important they are,’ says holistic wellness coach Kim Gilroy, who teaches people healthy eating habits. Leafy greens such as kale, collards, chard and spinach are particular winners. ‘They’re packed with vitamins, nutrients and phytochemicals that all do daily cleanup work,’ she says. ‘They support the cleansing functions of the kidneys and liver, and strengthen your immune system.’

Then make sure you recognise each one. ‘What you put into your body shouldn’t sound like a science experiment,’ says Montminy. Processed ingredients make the body work overtime, causing inflammation that makes you look puffier and older than you are. Start by picking one day a week that you eat only wholefoods.

TRICK #9 Eat the ‘K’ foods We’re talking about fermented ones like kefir, kimchi or kombucha tea, which contain immune-boosting probiotics or ‘good bacteria’. These microorganisms crowd out the bad bacteria in your gut and provide a barrier to toxins, Jampolis says. ‘You want to promote the good bacteria that aid digestion.’ Don’t bother subjecting yourself to one of those celeb-endorsed colonics – they flush out the good bacteria along with the bad. When I was 10 years old. Redheads always intrigued me, especially Anne of Green Gables, and my mom said, ‘Let’s just throw a rinse on that!’ Little did she know she opened up a can of worms. I still love my hair as red as I can get it! Q

Why it’s important: Sloughing off dead skin a couple of times a week helps your products penetrate better and keeps skin smooth and radiant. ‘If you’re prone to break-outs, do it three times a week, but avoid scrubbing any inflamed pimples,’ says Kilgore.

Use a creamy scrub with beads – or make your own by mixing a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda with freshly squeezed orange or lemon juice. (Their citric acid dissolves dead skin.)

Do a Soothing Face Mask Why it’s important: ‘A mask helps balance and calm your complexion,’ says Kilgore. For dry skin, she likes moisturising masks that have hyaluronic acid, aloe vera or honey. ‘If you’re oily, use a clay or mud mask, and for combination skin, try a glycerine one.’

Brush on your mask using a makeup fan brush (Kilgore says a pastry brush works fine too) to get a nice, even layer. Just avoid the eye area.

Cover your face with a warm, damp towel for two minutes (just one for sensitive skin) and gently press it in. This is a better alternative to steaming, whic can dry out skin.

Dab on the scrub, then lightly roll your fingertips all around your face. Do this for two minutes, spending at least one minute just on your T-zone.

To loosen clogged pores, use two damp face cloths – one in each hand – to gently press along the sides of blackheads, wiggling the skin to free them. (Leave red pimples alone.)

Rinse off with warm water – never hot – and a face cloth, which helps remove every trace of cleanser.

4 Wash with cool water, which helps constrict capillaries so you won’t look red afterwards.

A mild scrub like Clarins One-Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser (R330) is great for all skin types.

What it is: This is what most of us think of when we hear ‘foundation’: a fluid base that comes in many finishes – sheer, matt, anything you want.

Why you’ll like it: It feels weightless on the skin, is available in formulas from oilfree to moisturising, and can be layered to get as much coverage as you need. How to apply: You can use your fingers or a brush, whichever you’re most comfortable with. Makeup artist Gita Bass, who works with Tina Fey, likes to start from the middle of the face and blend outwards. ‘Then gently pat a damp sponge over it to remove any excess, particularly at the jawline and around the nose,’ she says. Powder Foundation What it is: There are two kinds: baked and pressed. Baked ones tend to be lighter and have a slightly glowy finish. Pressed ones make your skin matt. Why you’ll like it: It will give you a shinefree, poreless effect. Anyone can use it, but it’s extra-smart for women with oily skin who want to avoid looking shiny. And, of course, it won’t leak in your bag.

How to apply: Swirl it on with a powder brush, starting in the centre of your face and blending outwards. ‘For a more opaque finish, use a powder puff,’ says makeup artist Sam Fine, who works with actress Queen Latifah. What it is: Mineral foundations are – literally – minerals finely ground up to be used as makeup. They mostly come in powder form, but you can find them in liquids and creams too. If you’re lusting after a truly natural, earth-conscious option, check the packaging: the best ones have very few ingredients at all. Why you’ll like it: Mineral formulas provide flawless coverage, but your face still feels like it’s bare. The finish can be matt or radiant (just look for those words on the box). They are go-to products for sensitive, oily and break-out-prone skin types because they’re free of ingredients that can irritate or clog pores. How to apply: Buff on pressed or loose mineral foundation with a flat-head powder brush. For creams and liquids, your fingertips or a sponge are fine.

Hair 65Medium Spray a volumiser at the roots of wet hair to add body, then apply a bit of leave-in conditioner to the ends.

Put a bit of shine serum on the ends of damp hair, then blow-dry all of your hair without a brush until most of the moisture is gone.

Clip up the top section of hair – no need to be precise. Starting at the back, blow-dry using a flat brush to sweep hair forwards. (This keeps it from getting puffy.) Repeat on the sides.

If you have a fringe, blow-dry it using a big, round brush. Pull the fringe straight out from your forehead and aim the dryer’s nozzle towards its ends.

Pull up the top sections of hair and clip them. Starting at the back, wind small sections of hair around a ceramic brush from the ends up to the scalp and hit with the heat until dry.

A flat brush with nylon bristles smooths short hair so it lies in place. Try the Freestyle Paddle Brush (R79,95, Dis-Chem and Pick n Pay)

Let down the front. Blow-dry your fringe first, smoothing it with the brush from one side, then to the other. Unclip the rest and work back towards your crown until the top is all dry.

To finish, warm a tiny dab of pomade between your fingers and pull it through the ends for a piece-y effect.

Dry the sides and ends without a brush until they’re 95% done. Clip up the top and finish drying those sections, using the brush to pull hair taut, aiming the nozzle towards the ends.

Unclip the top section and dry the whole chunk at once: pull it straight up and point the dryer up too, which will help lock in the lift.

Emma Sadlier, a social-media law consultant, speaker and host on The Oscar Pistorious Trial Channel, shares her love for books My favourite book as a child was The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It’s the most wonderful tale of an inquiring mind, and it has beautiful illustrations. I think I love it even more as an adult. I loved reading because of my mother. She’s an avid reader and reads at least a book a week, usually more. She often passes the good ones on to me. My favourite authors are Roald Dahl and Hunter S Thompson. I don’t reread books, but I do read lots of cookery books and entertain a lot. I guess the recipes are my inspiration. My last great reads were All The Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy and Endings & Beginnings by Redi Tlhabi. I found Redi’s book devastatingly sad. I love stories about people and it was fascinating to read about her childhood.

OUR FAVOURITE NEW RELEASES Arctic Summer by Damon Galgut (R250, Random House Struik) It took EM Forster 11 years to complete his 1924 masterpiece, A Passage To India. One of SA’s finest novelists, Galgut describes how Forster followed his former Latin student and friend Masood to India, burning with unrequited love, and how his experiences in colonial India and Egypt influenced his approach to his ground-breaking novel, and his struggle to accept and express his homosexuality. A beautifully written literary page-turner. – Catriona Ross

Thinking of getting a pet bunny? Follow our advice for looking after your own Peter Rabbit PERSONALITY Rabbits are soft and cute, but they all have their own personalities. Some can be gentle, but others won’t like too much interaction and petting. HABITAT Your rabbit’s cage or pen should be at least four times their size and should include a litter box, bedding, food and a water bowl. While hay is best for bedding, newspaper and cat litter are best for their litter box. Make sure your yard is safe as well as rabbit-proof. An easy option is a rabbit fence. (DIY: buy flowerbed fencing at Builders Warehouse.) FOOD Rabbits should be fed a basic diet of grass hay, rabbit pellets and fresh greens like lettuce, parsley and watercress and a variety of vegetables, including Brussels sprouts. Note that spinach, cabbage and kale contain too much oxalate for rabbits. VETERINARY CARE Find a vet that knows rabbits. Problems such as fighting and spray urinating can be prevented by getting your rabbit spayed or neutered as soon as it’s old enough.

‘My dog often shivers and trembles. Is this normal or should I be concerned?’ A There are many reasons why dogs shiver and tremble. It could just be excitement, nausea or old age, but it could also point to more serious conditions, such as distemper, Generalised Tremour Syndrome, kidney failure, brain diseases or even poisoning. According to Audrey Cook, veterinary expert for WebMD, other telltale signs for these more serious conditions are eye and nose discharge, coughing, excessive salivating and yawning, vomiting and diarrhoea. If these symptoms are present, it’s best to get your dog to your vet as soon as possible to rule out any diseases or possible poisoning. If not, then perhaps your furry friend is just really happy to see you – calm him down by giving him loads of love.

HOW TO COMPLAIN LIKE A PRO The recession turned us into tricky customers: better at standing up for our rights and fussier about quality and service. So let’s keep it up! Here are eight ways to complain like an expert… 84


LESSON #1: USE TWITTER!

Complaining on Twitter is like standing in the middle of the offending store with a megaphone. Follow our stepby-step guide to make those big companies sit up and take note.

1) Go to twitter.com. Sign up by simply registering your name and e-mail address, then create a password. 2) Choose a Twitter name (or handle, as it’s called). This could be your name – @JaneBloggers, for example – but it can’t be the same as anyone else’s. 3) To find the Twitter handle of the company you want to complain to, use the search box, choose from the suggestions and press the Follow button so it will see your gripe. If it’s a large company, look for a small blue circled tick – this indicates it’s a bona fide account for the company. 4) Compose your tweet of complaint! You only have 140 characters per tweet, so keep it short and snappy. 5) Mention the company’s Twitter name midway through your comments so everyone on Twitter can see it: For example ‘Very unhappy with @badbuilder – poor service’. 6) Finally, don’t forget to add the hashtag #complaint at the end of your tweet to flag that you have a gripe that needs sorting.

LESSON #5: GET THE LAW ON YOUR SIDE If your complaint is going to succeed, you need to know your legal rights – inside out! RETURNS AND REFUNDS

you have an extra level of protection (in addition to the Consumer Protection Act): đ You can cancel a purchase from the moment you order it up to seven working days after you receive it. It doesn’t matter whether it’s faulty or you have simply changed your mind. LESSON #6: UNDERSTAND VOETSTOOTS

Before the Consumer Protection Act, buying something like a car ‘voetstoots’ meant you pretty much had to accept whatever you got.

This has changed. Now, you need to have been made fully aware of exactly what you are buying: the seller needs to disclose all the defects – obvious and hidden – and you have to agree to purchase in that condition. You can return the goods to the supplier for a full refund if they don’t match the quality perceived by you in the agreement. But, you might still be charged for use of the car before you returned it (for example mileage, damage and so on).

LESSON #7: COMPLAIN LIKE AN EXPERT

Professional complainer Jasper Griegson (complainer.co.uk) has six rules that are guaranteed to get your voice heard. 86

1) Start with a quick call to customer services (as this is probably company protocol). But if you feel you are being fobbed off, go straight to the top. 2) Complain in writing. There’s still something very powerful in a letter when compared with an e-mail, which is quite transient. Keep it short, concise and to the point – no more than a page. If you’ve really got a lot to say, make an attachment. Do your research and find the names of the people at the top. I usually write to somebody by name rather than to ‘the managing director’. 3) Keep the resolution open rather than asking for something specific in compensation. I like to conclude my letters in an open manner, such as ‘I look to you for a meaningful gesture of goodwill’. The response you receive may indeed exceed your expectations. 4) Always chase! I would expect an acknowledgment from the company within a week. Sometimes you have to be very persistent.


5) Be polite. If possible, use humour. What you really want is a one-to-one dialogue with a human being. If the complaint is particularly serious, be firm and assertive, but never rude or abusive. 6) My last-ditch attempt is what I call the scatter-gun approach, where you write to the entire board of a company. You may find that where one doesn’t take notice, another will.

Retractaline la Premier board (±R700, Game). Testers loved using this. It’s a long, wide board (123cm x 38cm), making it really easy to iron on. It’s also fairly heavy (5,6kg) and has an impressive 10 different height settings between 51cm and 92cm. You adjust the height by pushing on the metal lever, which is a simple operation. The legs are metal with rubber stoppers on the end, making it nonslip on different floor surfaces. It has a useful integrated clothes rack for storing laundry and comes with a separate sleeve and collar board, which is very handy. There is also a cord minder for keeping the cord out of the way. The board is metal mesh, which allows the steam to penetrate and then escape underneath. The iron sits comfortably in the iron rest. The fabric cover is removable for washing. It has a thin foam layer underneath for padding.

EASY IRONING

A SOLID CHOICE

Brabantia board (±R700, Boardmans). This board is a pleasure to use and although it’s not as wide or long as some of the others tested (110cm x 30cm), testers found ironing easy. It’s fairly heavy – 5,8kg – with metal legs and a metal mesh top. The fabric cover, which has foam padding underneath, is removable and the board has a pull-up lever, with a rubber trim that the iron rests on. It’s suitable for right- and left-handed users.

House of York Deluxe ironing board (±R420, Makro, Game, Pick n Pay and selected Spars). This has a solid board, wooden legs and two height settings – 78cm and 87cm. Testers liked the iron rest, which is an extension of the board and is covered with metallic heat-resistant fabric. The board is 114cm x 30cm and weighs 6kg, making it heavy to fold and unfold. This board was stable on the carpet, but it did move a little on tiles and wooden floors.

STURDY WOODEN LEGS Profile Concepts ironing board (±R170, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores). Although this seemed fairly small after using some of the other bigger boards, it’s an adequate size – 91cm x 30cm. It has wooden legs and a solid board, but is one of the lightest we tested (4,4kg). The board slid a little on wooden floors and tiles, but not on the carpet, where testers found it quite stable. The metal iron rest felt a little flimsy. It can be pushed underneath the board for storage. The fabric cover is not removable. The end of the board is squared off and worked adequately for ironing shirts. It has two height settings – 86cm and 91cm – so it’s not really suitable for sitting down while ironing.

BIG BUT LIGHTWEIGHT

Quality metal mesh ironing board (±R250, Checkers Hyper stores). This comes with a useful sleeve board and a built-in wire rack that sits under the board, which is very handy for storing unironed or ironed laundry. The sleeve board doesn’t have a clip to hold the legs upright, so testers were concerned about its stability. The board is big – 121cm x 38cm – so ironing is easy, especially bulky items like sheets and duvet covers. There are seven height settings from 67cm to 91cm. Testers found the iron sits very comfortably and securely in the iron rest. The top of the board is metal mesh, so the steam passes all the way through the board. The board was rather unsteady on all the different surfaces, and it appeared to have one leg slightly shorter than the others. For its size, this board is really light: 4,4kg.

EASY TO STORE

GOOD SIZE AND SHAPE

House of York Standard ironing board (±R350, Game and selected Spars). The retractable iron rest on this board makes it a good size for easy storage. It is 91cm x 30cm in size and has two height settings: 88cm and 82cm. It weighs 4,4kg and the fabric cover is not removable. Testers liked the shape of the end, which is fairly pointed, making it easy to iron shirt shoulders and the tops of sleeves.

Simply Supreme ironing board (±R350, Game). Testers liked the size (120cm x 34cm) of this board, which makes for easy ironing, especially larger items. The board has three different height settings – from 79cm to 92cm. It is one of the heavier boards tested: 6,8kg. The fabric covering, with padding underneath, is attached and not removable for washing. The board is solid, so the steam can’t pass through while ironing.

COMPACT AND NEAT

MULTI-HEIGHT SETTINGS

House of York Table Top board (±R200, Makro and Pick n Pay). This board’s fold-out wooden legs are really short and it’s designed for using on a counter or table. The size is 88cm x 30cm and the height is 13cm. It weighs only 2,8kg. The fabric cover, with padding underneath, is not removable. Testers found it sturdy for ironing. It’s not ideal for ironing large items like sheets, but it’s good for smaller items of clothing. It has no iron rest. The best thing about this board is that it takes up very little storage space.

Villa ironing board (±R380, Pick n Pay Hypermarkets and selected Family Stores). Testers were amazed at the range of height settings on this board, from a low 33cm to a max of 87cm, with 10 other easily adjustable height settings in between. It’s an adequate size – 110cm x 30cm – for ironing most items, even linen, and it weighs 6,4kg. It comes with a rail for hanging ironed clothes on, but there were no instructions or screws provided. Whether sitting through marathon makeup sessions for her role as Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games or walking the red carpet for The Lego Movie, Elizabeth Banks really shines in her roles as mother and wife. By Sian Edwards or starters, she’s beautiful. Elizabeth Banks’s elegant screen beauty has drawn comparisons to Audrey Hepburn. She’s brainy too. The actress graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1996, and in 1998 she earned a Master of Fine Arts from the American Conservatory Theatre. Elizabeth is also a prolific actress. She’s had roles in an impressive number of movies, including Catch Me If You Can, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Role Models, Seabiscuit, The Next Three Days, Our Idiot Brother, Pitch Perfect and Man On A Ledge. Elizabeth’s most recent role was in The Lego Movie, in which she voices the character Wyldstyle. She can also be seen in the upcoming comedy drama The Big Shoe, which co-stars Kristen Stewart and Jim Sturgess. The movie is currently in preproduction and will be filmed in Cape Town. But the 40-year-old is probably best known for her role as the pink-haired, prim and proper Effie Trinket in The Hunger Games franchise, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. The Massachusetts-born Elizabeth confesses she was seen as a goody two-shoes in her youth, but she was also a bit of a tomboy who spent her childhood messing around with cars. ‘We played baseball and fixed cars, because that’s what Dad liked to do with us,’ says the eldest of four children. Elizabeth and her husband, sports writer and producer Max Handelman, met on her first day at university in 1992 and tied the knot in 2003. The couple have two sons, Felix, 3, and Magnus, 20 months, but their journey to parenthood hasn’t been an easy one. In Lucky magazine, Elizabeth spoke about her struggle to conceive. ‘It was a womb issue for me,’ she said. ‘Embryos wouldn’t implant.’ The couple decided to go the surrogate route, with both their sons being born via a gestational surrogate. ‘It’s a big leap, inviting this person into your life to do this amazing, important thing for you…. We make a “baby cake” and bake it in another woman’s “oven”’, she told the magazine. Elizabeth shared the news of second son Magnus’s birth via her website, where she wrote: ‘This experience has exceeded all expectations, taught us a great deal about generosity and gratitude, and established a relationship that will last a lifetime. I now turn my attention to managing 98

personality traits. I’m more of a rule follower, so that’s my DNA. I rebel in my own way. (Laughs.) Q: As a female in Hollywood are you encouraged or discouraged by the place of women in Hollywood? EB: I’m not one to particularly complain, but I’m not en-

couraged. (Laughs.) You know, someone said to me, ‘So, you’ve graduated from playing the girlfriend role?’ and I would say, that’s not true, because there aren’t very many roles for women outside of the girlfriend role in mainstream movies. I mean I could go make indies all the time, but I’d like to think that I’d earned the right to make bigger, better movies that pay my mortgage. Unfortunately, that means I’m probably still going to play the girlfriend.

Q: What kinds of odd jobs did you have to take before you could support yourself as an actor? EB: I had every kind of job when I was

putting myself through university. I’ve been working since I was 11½ years old. I did everything. I supervised an after-school game room; I sold popcorn at the Popcorner, because it was at the corner. I sold ice cream, I was a waitress for 10 years and the worst job I ever had – we used to call it being a maid, but now they call it housekeeper – I was a maid in a bed and breakfast. I was cleaning up people’s bodily fluid, which is disgusting. People treat hotel rooms horribly. You should tip the people who clean your hotel rooms – they deserve it. Q: Are you a good tipper then? EB: I am a very good tipper, because I’ve had all those jobs

that require tips. Q: You have an unusual story about how you got into acting, right? EB: Yes! I’m an actor because I broke my leg sliding into

third base [while playing softball], and I needed something else to do after school. I played softball in my youth, I was a cheerleader and I played basketball, none of which I was particularly great at, but I loved softball. So, I broke my leg sliding into third base, and subsequently spent the next year going, What am I going to do? And I spent the next year singing in school plays, and now I’m an actor. Who knew?

I was an old lady, I was 24, that’s old to be starting as an actor, (laughs) and at that moment, I just wanted to do anything. Then I got offered a soap opera like the first day, and I was like, Wait a minute, that’s the first day, what can I do tomorrow? and so I started doing adverts. I’m one of those very regular actors who had a very slow and steady build-up. I started in adverts and then I did television guest spots on the Law & Orders and the Sex And The Citys, and whatever was shot in New York where I lived. Then I came out to LA to do pilot season, and I never got cast in a pilot, but I started getting cast in movies and I did small roles in really big movies. Now I’m doing big roles in really big movies, so that’s it.

Q: So when you started in Hollywood, what did you expect and were those expectations met? EB: My expectations change on an almost daily basis. I al-

colour doesn’t mean you need to take a sledgehammer to your bathroom. ‘It’s easy to paint over them,’ says Ashley McLeod of the blog Domestic Imperfection. She swears by Rust-Oleum’s Specialty Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit (available from Builders Warehouse, R600). Follow the directions on the box and use a foam roller. (Fuzzy ones can leave lint behind.) The end result will be gleaming and durable. ‘My shower is going on a year, and not a chip in sight,’ says McLeod.

Paint it and assemble the pieces with a tough adhesive. Once that’s dry, brush more glue on the back of the moulding and press it onto the wall, holding the frame for a few minutes until it sticks.

Ditch your shower doors

If you’ve got one of those showers from the ’60s with ugly sliding glass doors, you don’t need a contractor to get rid of them, says Sarah Khandjian of sarahhearts.com. Use a razor blade to remove the caulking from the metal track. Next, unscrew the track. ‘It should pop right off,’ she says. Then fill in the screw holes in the tile with caulk – it comes in lots of colours. Put up a tension rod and hang a gorgeous curtain.

Change your shower head, change your life ‘The first

thing I did in my rental bathroom was install a rain-style fixture,’ says interior designer Grant Gibson. ‘You just screw it on, and it’s like a new shower!’

Make your medicine cabinet part of the room

Line it with coordinating contact paper and you’ll smile every time you reach for the toothpaste. Khandjian explains how: cut a piece of contact paper that’s bigger than the cabinet. Remove the shelves and stick the paper on the back of the cabinet, slowly working from the middle to the corners. Finish by trimming the excess with an NT cutter or craft knife.

Go wild with wallpaper Since bathrooms are small, you don’t have to

buy that much paper. Also, you won’t be in there 24/7, so you can get a little kooky with your pattern. If you paper a room that gets steamy, add extra paste at the seams, and always run your fan while showering. Or try vinyl decals (we love the My Wall Tattoos range) – they’ll hold up to moisture, and you can just peel them off when you want a new look.

Then I put it in a cheap frame,’ she says. ‘Anyone can do the same in Microsoft Word – the hardest part was choosing the font.’

Yay! Lighting designer Bill Schwinghammer shares three tips that will make you actually want to face the mirror in the morning:

đ For crisp, balanced light, use incandescent or halogen 60-watt bulbs. Definitely stay away from fluorescent bulbs, he says. đ Replace any metal lampshades or sconces with frosted-glass ones, as these cast a softer and more flattering glow. đ No sconces? Tami’s Creamy Biltong Soup SERVES 6 50g butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 5ml ground cumin 100g biltong powder 1 Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot 500ml boiling water 250ml flour 500ml milk

1. Melt butter in a large pot until frothy and add onion. Fry until soft and translucent, then add cumin and biltong powder. 2. Dissolve Knorr Vegetable Stock Pot in 250ml of the boiling water and keep ready. 3. Add flour to the onion mixture and lower heat. 4. Slowly add water in measured quantities, stirring continuously and adding more water as the mixture thickens. Add the remaining 250ml boiling water and keep stirring. 5. Add milk in small quantities until it’s well incorporated and creamy. Grate nutmeg into the soup and add Nestlé Ideal Unsweetened Evaporated Milk.

380g (1 can) Nestlé Ideal Unsweetened Evaporated Milk 5ml fresh nutmeg 200g mature Cheddar, grated 50ml sherry 50g blue cheese, crumbled salt and pepper to taste extra biltong slices, to serve

6. Turn off the stove and add the cheese, stirring to melt. Once you’ve added the cheese, don’t boil the soup again, as it will split. 7. Add sherry and mix well before adding the crumbled blue cheese, leaving some for serving. 8. Season to taste, remembering that the biltong powder is already seasoned and the additional biltong and blue cheese that you’ll serve the soup with will add some saltiness. 9. Purée soup using a stick (or jug) blender for a smoother consistency, if preferred. 10. Serve with sliced biltong and crumbled blue cheese.

Emma’s Seared Salmon with Creamy Spiced Dhal SERVES 4 2 tsp mustard seeds 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 4 garlic cloves, crushed 2,5cm fresh ginger,

grated 410g can lentils, rinsed and drained 290g can Nestlé Sterilised Dessert Cream 1 tbsp butter 4 x 150g salmon fillets

1. In a large pot, on a low heat, toast the mustard and cumin seeds until they give off a nutty aroma; be careful not to burn them. Set aside in a bowl. 2. In the same pot, heat half the olive oil over a low heat. Add the onion, garlic and ginger, and soften for 10 minutes, adding a little water if the mixture looks like it might burn. 3. Tip the lentils and toasted seeds into the pot, then stir for a couple of minutes before pouring in the Nestlé Sterilised Dessert Cream. Bring to a gentle boil, then immediately cover the pot. Reduce the heat to a low setting and leave to simmer for

salt and pepper to taste handful fresh coriander, finely chopped fresh lemon slices or wedges, to serve

about 15 minutes, stirring every now and then to make sure the mixture isn’t sticking. If it starts to get too thick, add a little water. 4. In a separate pan, heat the remaining olive oil and the butter. Place the salmon fillets in the pan, flesh first, and gently fry for 3 minutes or until crisp. 5. Turn over and season with salt and pepper. Fry the fillets for another 3 minutes or until just cooked. 6. To serve, add the chopped coriander to the lentil dhal and plate into shallow bowls. Top each portion with a salmon fillet. 7. Garnish with lemon slices or wedges.

Sharon Glass’s easy-to-follow recipes and fuss-free approach to food have earned her a loyal following of food lovers. This self-taught chef, who has written several recipe books, has run her own cookery school in Johannesburg for 28 years. She’s passionate about desserts, and her speciality is cheesecake.

A There are two golden rules for freezing desserts. The first rule is to cool the dessert completely before freezing it. It should initially be frozen uncovered – if you cover it with plastic wrap or foil, the dessert will stick to it. Once you have frozen your dessert, place some baking paper on top of it and then place it in an air-tight container or resealable bag. This will help to prevent freezer burn and will prevent the dessert from absorbing the scents of other food in the freezer. It’s best to keep frozen desserts such as semifreddo or frozen

yoghurt for a maximum of one month. The second golden rule is to always thaw a dessert in the refrigerator to defrost it. This will allow it to defrost slowly and will prevent moisture from collecting, which in turn prevents a change in the taste and texture. It’s a great way of making sure you don’t end up with a soggy mess. This tip is particularly important when defrosting pastries and cake-based desserts. NB: Some desserts, for instance meringues, are not suitable for freezing.

‘What’s the secret to making a good batter for fish or tempura?’ While I don’t often deep-fry foods, I always try to stick to some basic guidelines when frying: 1. Use ice water for any batter, particularly tempura, as this will result in a really crispy batter. 2. Be sure not to overmix, as the lumps give the tempura batter its unique texture and crunchy coating. 3. I like to use chopsticks to mix the ingredients together and to hold the fish or veg over the bowl, which allows any excess batter to drip off. 4. The secret to perfectly fried battered fish or tempura veg is for the oil to be extremely hot. 5. The quicker the food cooks, the less oily it will be. The result: a crispy vegetable or melt-in-the-mouth piece of fresh fried fish.

Option 1 Loaded Chilli Potatoes Hands-on Time 10 minutes Cooking Time 25 minutes Serves 4 4 large baking potatoes 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, crushed ½ tbsp chilli powder 400g beef mince 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes 400g can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 tbsp tomato purée ½ tsp cocoa powder Worcester sauce, to taste large handful fresh coriander, roughly chopped salt and pepper sour cream or Greek yoghurt, to serve Cheddar cheese, grated, to serve 1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Pierce potatoes all over with a fork and place on a heatproof plate. Microwave on high for 15 minutes or

until they are beginning to soften. Transfer to the oven to crisp up for 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat oil in a large pan over a medium heat and fry onion until softened (about 8 minutes). Stir in garlic, chilli powder and mince, and brown all over (about 5 minutes). Stir through tomatoes, kidney beans, tomato purée, cocoa powder and Worcester sauce. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 minutes, allowing it to reduce slightly. Stir in most of the coriander and season to taste. 3. To serve, cut a cross into each potato. Top with a quarter of the beef mixture, sour cream or yoghurt, cheese and remaining coriander. Heat the remaining oil and fry the mushrooms and garlic together until golden and cooked through. 4. Drain pasta and stir through the pesto and mushrooms. 1. Heat oil or ghee in a large pan and fry onion until softened (about 8 minutes). Stir in garlic and spices, and fry for 1 minute. 2. Stir in potatoes, coconut cream and coconut milk, and bring to the boil. Bubble for 15 to 20 minutes until potatoes are soft. Stir in lime zest and check seasoning. With a slotted spoon, remove cinnamon stick and curry leaves, if using. Serve with nan bread or poppadoms and yoghurt.

1. In a large, nonmetallic bowl, stir together the salmon, juice and zest of 2 limes, and chilli. Chill and allow to marinate for an hour, or overnight, if possible. 2. To make the salsa, stir together the mango, avocado, spring onions and zest and juice of 1 lime. 3. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and carefully fry the salmon with the lime juices, turning gently, until cooked through (about 10 minutes). Serve salmon in tacos topped with salsa. 1 baby marrow, sliced 2 tomatoes, roughly chopped 400g can chickpeas, drained 50g pitted black olives, sliced 75g feta, crumbled 1 tsp dried origanum 2 tbsp olive oil 4 x 125g salmon fillets 400g new potatoes, halved salt and pepper


1 onion, diced 50g chorizo, chopped 500g chicken breasts, cut into pieces 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning 1 green pepper, roughly chopped ½ to 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 350g long-grain rice 800ml chicken stock 400g can tomatoes chopped parsley, to garnish

1. Preheat oven to 200°C. In a large bowl, mix together baby marrow, tomatoes, chickpeas, olives, feta and origanum with 1 tbsp of the olive oil. Cut 4 greaseproof paper squares, or foil if you prefer, about 33cm x 33cm. Lay a quarter of the vegetable mixture in the centre of each. Top each pile of veg with a salmon fillet and fold the sides of the parchment paper together to form 4 parcels. 2. On a large baking tray, mix the potatoes with the remaining olive oil and plenty of seasoning. Put salmon parcels alongside the potatoes, with plenty of room around them. Bake for 25 minutes until salmon is cooked through and potatoes are soft. To serve, unwrap each parcel. Transfer vegetables and salmon to plates, adding a quarter of the potatoes to each. Serve with tzatziki, if you like. EACH SERVING About 2 280kJ, 40g protein, 30g fat (7g saturated), 27g carbohydrate (3g total sugars), 6g fibre.

500g chicken breasts 3 tbsp olive oil salt and pepper 2 large oranges 1 tbsp runny honey 1 tsp white-wine vinegar 250g cooked beetroot, quartered 2 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped 140g mixed salad leaves like watercress, spinach and rocket 1. Put chicken breasts between two sheets of greaseproof paper; bash with a rolling pin until 1cm thick. Brush chicken on both sides with some of the oil and season. Fry chicken in a frying pan over a medium heat until cooked through, turning occasionally. 2. Meanwhile, on a board, slice the top and bottom off each orange. With a knife, remove the oranges’ peel and pith, then slice between membranes to remove segments. Squeeze juice from remains of the oranges into a jug. Whisk honey, white-wine vinegar and remaining olive oil into orange juice. Season to taste. 3. In a serving bowl, mix the beetroot, chives, salad leaves and orange. When chicken has cooled slightly, slice into strips and add to bowl. Toss through dressing. Serve with bread, if you like. EACH SERVING About 1 235kJ, 33g protein, 9g fat (1g saturated), 17g carbohydrate (17g total sugars), 5g fibre.

Stir in chilli flakes, rice, prawns, pineapple, soya sauce and fish sauce, and heat through. Garnish with coriander and serve with lime wedges. Then the recipe is edited for clarity.

Another team member prepares the recipe as written, varying the brands of equipment and ingredients. (She may do this several times – using a gas stove instead of an electric stove, a no-name brand of tomatoes in one test and a household brand in the next.) Note: all microwave tests are done in 1 000-watt ovens. If your microwave has a different wattage, you may need to adjust the cooking time.

a Xhosa marriage. After the wedding, the bride is handed over to her new family. You are even given a new name; mine is Sinathi Isandla Sika Yehova, meaning ‘God’s hand is upon us’. It’s an honour to get such a name. Being on Food Network [the DStv channel] is a dream come true. The interview was very informal, and I jabbered on. The interviewers kept nudging each other and smiling. I was pregnant by the time we signed the contract, in 2011, but they were so lovely. They said good things were worth waiting for. I collect wooden spoons and tea towels. If ever you need any of those, call Siba!
