GERUND
A. Pengertian Gerund Gerund adalah kata kerja yang berfungsi sebagai kata benda sehingga dapat berfungsi sebagai subject of a sentence, direct object, subject compliment, object of a preposition, adjective, appositive, a short prohibition. Bentuk gerund biasanya disebut verb+ing. Singkatnya, Gerund adalah kata benda yang dibentuk dari kata kerja (verb) + ing.
B. Kaidah Pembentukan Gerund Ada beberapa kaidah untuk membentu gerund secara benar: 1. Jika ada lebih dari satu konsonan (b, c, d, f, dsb), tambahkan ing. Contoh: learn + ing = learning. 2. Jika ada lebih dari satu kata hidup (a, i, u, e, dan o), tambahkan ing. Contoh: l ead + ing = leading dan wear + ing = wearing. 3. Jika ada satu huruf hidup dan konsonan yang diiringi dengan penekanan pada suku kata, gandakan konsonan dan tambahkan ing. Contohnya: sit + ing = sitting. 4. Jika ada satu atau lebih konsonan dan e, hilangkan e dan tambahkan ing. Contoh: give + ing = giving. 5. Jika huruf terakhirnya y, tambahkan ing. Contoh: Fly + ing = flying.
C. Susunan Gerund Kalimat yang menggunakan bentuk gerund memiliki beberapa variasi susunan, yaitu : 1. Verb + Gerund Formula :
S + V + Gerund Example : 1) We avoid eating fatty foods. 2) She likes talking about natural phenomena 2. Adjective + Gerund Formula :
S + To Be + Adjective + Gerund Example : 1) she is lazy preparing her homework 2) He is diligent doing gymnastics in the morning 3. Preposition + Gerund Formula 1 :
S + V + Gerund + to + Gerund Example : 1) She loves dancing to acting 2) They likes singing to dancing
Formula 2 :
Preposition + Gerund + S + V Example : 1) Before going to market, they have visit rina's party 2) After listening the music, he looked very happy 4. Prepositional phrase + Gerund Formula :
S + V + Preposition + Gerund Example : 1) He is studying for getting good score in the exam 2) We are going to giving the letter for him 5. Object + Gerund Formula :
S + V + O + Gerund Example : 1) he doesn't like you using him phone 2) she loves her teliing about her family 6. Infinitive + Gerund Formula :
S + V - inf + Gerund
Example : 1) They go jogging everyday. 2) He likes swimming very much.
D. Fungsi Gerund Sebagaimana dijelaskan diatas bahwa gerund berfungsi sebagai subject of a sentence, direct object, subject compliment, object of a preposition, adjective, appositive, a short prohibition. 1. Gerund berfungsi sebagai subject of a sentence Example : 1) Eating every morning give me the positive energy for study in my college 2) Jogging is the cheapest sports to do every day 3) Speaking is easy but doing is so difficult 2.
Gerund berfungsi sebagai direct object Example : 1) She likes reading 2) He loves singing very much 3) We must keep learning to get the good score

Gerund berfungsi sebagai object of preposition Example : 1) He went to library for reading book about health 2) She is hungry before eating her fried rice 3) They will visit to palembang after going to medan 5. Gerund berfungsi sebagai adjective Example : 1) Drawing book is the good book for drawing the scenary 2) Living room is my favourite room in my house 3) He doesn’t have a driving license 6. Gerund berfungsi sebagai appositive Example : 1) they are favourite activities are dancing and singing, they spend much money for exercise every day 2) his hobby is studying take a lot of time every day 3) her hobby is reading book about history, she always goes to library every morning 7. Gerund berfungsi sebagai a short prohibition Example : 1) No smoking in this room 2) No swimming in this river 3) No parking in front of the store
Beberapa expression juga bisa ditambahkan gerund yaitu worth, rather than, instead of, example : 1. Worth
: It is worth studying about english
2. Rather than
: I like shopping rather than swimming at the swimming pool
3. Instead of
: instead of going to the party, she just stay at her home every night
