Gas Engine Operation General Proper engine operation and maintenance are essential to long engine life and maximum performance. The essentials for proper operation and normal periodic maintenance are outlined in this guide. However, your Caterpillar dealer is available for troubleshooting and/or repairs when required. efore starting the engine, familiari!e yourself with these procedures and apply the principles to your particular installation.
Safety Precautions "afety is basically common sense. There are standard safety rules but each situation has its own peculiarities which cannot always be covered by rules. Therefore, your experience and common sense will be your best guides to safety. #atch for ha!ards. Correct deficiencies promptly. $ou can do something about safety. %ac& of attention to safety can result in' accidents, personal in(ury, reduction of efficiency and worst of all)loss of life. *se the following safety precautions as a general guide to safe operation. 1. +ever ad(ust or repair a machine while in operation. 2. emove all loose tools and electrical cords from the engine before starting. 3. -eep the engine room and floor area clean. 4. "tore oily rags in containers. 5. +ever store flammable liquids near the engine. 6. o not smo&e around batteries. Hydrogen gas generated by a charging battery is explosive. -eep batteries in a well ventilated area. 7. bserve + "0-1+2 signs. 8. o not wear loose clothing around machinery. 9. e sure the engine room is properly ventilated. 1. 3lways disconnect and tape the ground battery lead before wor&ing on the electrical system. 11. 3ll electrical equipment must be grounded according to local building codes. 12. e sure an automatic start)stop system is inoperative when the engine is being wor&ed on. isconnect the starter from the start switch.

13. Use the emergency stop button for emergency only. (This procedure shorts out the magneto, thus leaving unburned gas in the manifold.) 14. An overly rich fuel mixture can cause combustion in the exhaust system. 15. All gas lines and valves must meet local codes. 16. Check piping periodically for gas leaks.

Periods Of Limited Use +rolonged operation at lo- idle or reduced load may cause oil consumption and carboning in the combustion chamber and result in poor performance and a loss of po-er. very four hours, load the engine to clear carbon from the combustion chamber. "f the engine is to be stored or left standing for a long period of time, the lubricating oil may drain a-ay from the cylinder -alls and piston rings. This lack of lubricant permits rings to rust, and causes unnecessary -ear by metaltometal contact bet-een the pistons and rings -hen the engine is started. The lack of lubricant may not cause any noticeable change in engine operation after it has been started, but it does contribute to shorter engine life. "f an engine is not going to be used for several -eeks, rene- the oil film by running the engine once a -eek until it is thoroughly -arm. This -ill circulate the oil and -ill prevent rust from forming. %ubricate all points mentioned in the lubrication cha rt. "f an engine is going to be put in -inter storage, see your Caterpillar dealer for storage instructions.

6. Repeat this procedure for each carburetor. 7. After these initial adjustments the engine can be started. Adjusting Line Pressure Regualtor With Known BTU Fuel 1. With known BTU fuel, refer to a differential and BTU curve. ee !orm !"#$%#&&, or see 'our (aterpillar )ealer for pressure setting. 2. Use the curve to find proper differential setting which gives the correct air fuel ratio. . !ollow procedure under line pressure regulator until adjusted gas pressure will support the proper differential with engine at idle condition. Adjusting Line Pressure Regulator With Un!nown BTU Fuels 1. !ollow procedure under line pressure regulator for setting which will allow starting of engine. 2. *nstall accurate tachometer on engine. . Remove line regulator plug +& and install adjusting tool. "#T$% -n turbocharged engines a special tool is necessar' to prevent boost pressure from escaping when regulator cap is removed. &. tart engine and put under constant fied load. /oad should be as near full load as possible with engine running stead'. '. 0h'sicall' lock carburetor throttle plate in position while engine is operating. 6. )isconnect governor linkage. 7. Adjust regulator slotted cap to get maimum engine R01. 1aimum engine R01 can be found best b' starting with a lean miture and slowl' increasing to reach maimum R01. (. Reduce the maimum obtainable R01 b' $2. This is done b' leaning miture 3 turn slotted cap counterclockwise in regulator. This will give proper air fuel ratio. ). Reconnect governor linkage and unlock throttle plate. 1*. Remove special tool from regulator or install cap. 11. *f differential is desired, a manometer ma' be installed at carburetor point 4 and 5 and read. Adjusting Power +i,ture -rew / 1. 0ower miture screw +$ should be adjusted with engine operating at rated load and R01 onl'. 2. *ncrease richness until engine reaches its maimum R01. . Turn power miture screw to lean until engine loses R01. &. Turn power miture screw to rich until engine regains highest R01.

This force# added to the s)rin( force# ensures that (as )ressure to the car$uretor will always $e (reater than inlet air )ressure re(ardless of load conditions. * tur$ochar(ed en(ine will not develo) full )ower without a $alance line.
