METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION AND TESTING OF FIRE FIGHTING PIPES AND SPRINKLERS 1.0
PURPOSE
To define the method and procedures for installation of fire fighting pipe works inside the building. 2.0
SCOPE OF WORKS
The Method is applicable to all Internal fire fighting pipes, riser's works and sprinklers. 3.0
PROCEDURE
Before commencement following works are required to be carried out. a)
Check work area is clean and safe.
b)
Check materials to be used have an approved material submittal and inspection.
c)
Check drawings to be used have an approved shop drawings submittal.
d)
Check that the concrete is repaired, inspected and approved prior to installation of fire fighting pipes and sprinklers.
4.0
INSTALLATION
Mark the routing of pipe work on slab / concrete according to approved shop drawings.
Fix hangers and supports according to approved shop drawings.
Measure the length of pipe required, marking due allowance for any pipe fittings to be used. Cut the pipe to the measured length.
The type of jointing method shall be threading for sizes 50 mm and smaller, grooving for sizes 65mm and larger.
Groove joints, starts by removing dust and moisture. Check the face is square, lift the pipe, rest the pipe one side on the stand; other side insert between the grooving upper and lower rollers, adjust the rollers to hold the pipe, start the grooving machine, apply hydraulic pressure or manual pressure to groove wheel till we reach the specified depth, join the pipes with the approved groove couplers.
Thread joints, starts by removing dust and moisture. Make the pipe at desired length, place the pipe in between the machine and cut it by using cutter, use reamer to clear the edge, pace the die head on position, turn the carriage hand wheel to bring dies against end of pipe, continue applying pressure to hand wheel to start dies, when desired length of thread has been reached depress release handle to discharge latch, die head will open, apply joint compound, and tighten the joint to leave less than 3 threads exposed.
Close necessary open ends with end caps to keep pipe clean.

Painting pipes; Ensure that the surface is free of dust and all other contaminants before proceeding for painting, apply wash primer with brush and rolling brush as first coat on pipe, apply topcoat red enamel paint with brush and rolling brush, give sufficient time for drying to touch and to fully cure.
Carry out hydro test as follows:
City water supply will be used as a test media. Pressurizing hand or electric pump will be used for pressurizing each completed line to the required test pressure.
Test head with pressure gauge and valve connection to the pressure pump shall be connected to the installation.
After finishing the mounting of pipes the section to be tested of system will be tested with pressure of 15 bar.
Before testing the section all air must be vented.
All valves in the lines shall be in an open position during testing
All open pipes will be closed with plugs.
Do not use piping system valves to isolate sections where test pressure exceeds valve pressure rating.
The pressure will be increased up to the test pressure with 1 bar intervals and the test takes 2 hours, in that period the pressure shall be maintained, in that period the piping system shall withstand the test pressure specified without showing any evidence of leakage or other defects, any reduction of test pressures as indicated by pressure gauges shall be deemed to indicate the presence of a leak unless such reduction can be readily attributed to some other cause.
In case of unsatisfactory test, the place of leakage is repaired or replaced and the test is repeated.
Upon satisfactory completion of the testing process the Engineer shall sign the Test Certification provided by the Contractor, copies of Test Certification shall be given to the Engineer, Employer and relevant Authorities.
After successful testing of pipe work, start fixing the equipments, sprinklers, cabinets etc. and do the final touch up of painting.

SAFETY
Safety equipment to be worn at all times.
The pipes should be laid on a reasonable flat surface free from large stones or sharp projections. Different pipes are best stocked separately.
Stocks should be limited to 1 m height and be shaded properly by canvas or similar to avoid damage from UV radiation.
Pipes should not be dragged along rough surface. Loading & unloading of pipes should be carried out by hand and use of skids should be avoided. Pipes should not be dropped on hard surface.
Care should be taken before loading to check the vehicle load carrying area is free from nails and other projections. Pipes shall be properly supported during transportation. Pipe should never be thrown.
Lock valves and put warning tape during the hydro testing of circuit.
