Action: Increases level of gamma/aminobutyric in brain, which decreases seizure activity.
Dosage & Frequency: 15 mg/kg daily increased at 1wk intervals by 5-10 mg/kg daily Route of Administration: PO
Indication Treatment of primary generalized seizures, and notably absence and myoclonic seizures, and also for partial seizures. Also used to treat acute manic phase of bipolar disorders and for the prophylaxis of migraine.
Adverse Reaction
Contraindication
The most frequent Hepatic dysfunction, adverse effects are GI urea cycle disorder. disturbances, particularly in initiation of therapy.
Nursing Responsibility *Assess for GI complaints. *Assess for pain. *Assess for changes in bowel. *Assess for EPS. *Instruct the patient to inform physician of transient intestinal cramps, increased plasma prolactin levels and EPS occur.
Parameters Monitor liver and clotting functions. Patients on multiple anticonvulsants, with metabolic disorders, severe seizure disorders accompanied by mental retardation or organic brain diseases. Pancreatitis. Hyperammonemia, thrombocytopenia. Avoid abrupt withdrawal. May affect ability to drive or operate machinery. Pregnancy and lactation.
