so expensive to come so far. Then in the 1850s, with the discovery of gold, there was a rsh of people from all rond the globe who were happy to pay their own fares. The convict and ex-convict element in the poplation rapidly diminished. The children of the convicts had al ways been free. From the 1850s the colonists were governing themselves and wanting to bild prosperos and respectable societies. The colonists became ashamed of their convict past and did not talk abot it, thogh the res t of the world did not forget Astralia’s strange origins. From abot the 1960s, after years of shame and denial, Astralians began to be prod of their convict past and many people are now pleased to find a convict ancestor.
The first great barrier the Sydney settlers faced was the montain range only 50 kilometres to the west – the Ble Montains. This is not so mch a montain range as a great tableland ct into deep valleys. Explorers trying to get throgh it wold go p the valleys and then face sheer cliffs. In 1813 three men, Blaxland, Wentwor th and Lawson, got across by going p to the platea and following the ridges. The road and railway across the Ble Montains still follows their rote. Beyond the montains was good open contry sitable for sheep and cattle. Bt soon the explorers were into dry and deser t contry. They had troble finding water and carrying enogh food to srvive. The first settlers were very loyal to the British Empire. As a Eropean otpost on the edge of Asia they also felt they were in danger, especially after Japan became a great power. They needed the Empire and its great fleet to defend them. Astralia foght with Britain in both World Wars to keep the Empire strong and so protect itself. Astralian soldiers enter ed World War I in 1915 with an attack on Germany’s ally, Trkey. They were part of a large contingent of British and French troops bt the Astralians and New Zealanders were given their own sector of the Gallipoli Peninsla to attack . They were pt ashore in the wrong place and had to scale almost perpendiclar cliffs nder enemy fire. They got p the cliffs and dg in. This was acknowledged as an amazing feat of arms. Astralians at home took tremendos pride in their soldiers. The AnZAC leGend The Anzac tr adition was for ged on 25 April 1915 when the Astralian a nd New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac) landed on the Gallipoli Peninsla in Trkey. It marked the start of a campaign which lasted eight months and reslted in some 25 000 Astralian casalties, inclding 8700 who were killed or died of wonds or disease. The bravery and spirit of those who served on the Gallipoli Peninsla shaped a legend, and so ‘Anzac’ became par t of the Astralian and New Zealand lexicon. Men of every sort were digging and calling each other ‘mate’, the term that wold eventally be sed everywhere. At the Ballarat goldfield in 1854 the gold diggers staged a large protest at the harsh way the government officials ran the gold field, especially the collection of the licence fee to dig for gold.
