As the guest o honour at the Cannes Festival in 1955, Grace Kelly had no idea that her lie was about to change. During a photo session in the Palace o Monaco, she met Rainier III and a great romance between the actress and the prince was about to begin. To celebrate their engagement, Prince Rainier III o Monaco oered his uture wie an emerald-cut diamond ring weighing 10.47 carats. To enhance its colour and clarity, Cartier created a platinum setting o e xemplary lightness and simplicity: the metal claws holding the wonderully lustrous diamond seemed to vanish,
on the bed and rubs the ring with a corner o the sheet to make it shine. It was truly an exceptional diamond. Between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, the chemistry o their frst meeting soon turned into unconditional love. Burton would move mountains or the actress and oered her the most beautiul stones and jewellery sets. In 1969, he bought one o the most beautiul diamonds in the world, the “Cartier-Burton-Taylor” weighing an astonishing 69.42 carats, and presented it to her aboard their yacht. Forced to choose between his duty and the woman he loved, the King made his decision and they began a long, romantic lie together as the Duke and Duchess o Windsor. Since the couple shared a passion or jewellery, Cartier became closely involved in this loving partnership.

The Cartier selection process only accepts diamonds that meet the rarity criteria known as the 4Cs (Carat, Colour, Clarity and Cut.) From these pre-selected stones, Cartier retains only those that reach our own high quality standards: the whitest diamonds (rom D to H) with no inclusions visible to the naked eye (rom IF to VS2), and whose perect proportions maximise the stone’s lustre (Cut grade “Very good” and “Excellent”). To guarantee the objectivity o our decisions, Cartier diamonds are then certifed by an independent body, the GIA (Gemmological Institute o America.)
