GENERAL The aim of the project is to carry out remediation and rehabilitation works of existing pits and contaminated soil in the South and East Kuwait Assets in Kuwait. The project is incorporated under Company’s strategy of “Soil Remediation of Contaminated Features in SEK Fields”. Key objectives of the Project include the following: • To repair damage done to the natural landscape as a result of oil operations over many decades; • To rehabilitate a selection of contaminated features to ecologically functioning areas that are able once again to support a typical range of native plant species; • Appropriate Health & Safety protocols and Explosive Ordnance Detection (EOD) appropriate to the associated risks noted with the features; • To recover oil contained within the features (where applicable); • To apply a risk based methodology of remediation concurrent with recognized international protocols adapted to the prevailing environmental conditions in Kuwait; • To initiate soil remediation techniques associated with the nature of the oil contamination existing within the features; • To establish a selection of native plant species to initiate ecosystem recovery and reduce desertification at the selected features; • To monitor and compare the effectiveness of various remediation approaches using the established native plant species as performance indicators. Features to be treated are: Sludge Pits: originate from a number of operational activities associated with Company operations. These pits have generally arisen from the need to dispose of excess crude oil during shutdowns and during work-over operations associated with Gathering Centres (GCs) and well heads. Crude oil from well head work-over operations stored locally in burn pits (disposal pits) is generally disposed of in the Sludge Pits. Oily sludges from the base of tanks from GCs and Tank Farms are also disposed of to these pits. As a consequence of the construction and use of these Sludge Pits soil has been contaminated with crude oil in the vicinity of and underlying each Sludge Pit. Effluent Pits: are disposal pits in which waste process water produced from the initial separation of oil, gas and water is left to evaporate. This initial separation occurs at the Gathering Centres (GCs), thus Effluent Pits are generally positioned no greater than 1,000m from a GC. Each GC has several such pits associated with it. Gatch Pits: are hard pans of calcareous sand or gravel. Gatch is used for construction works throughout Kuwait. Within Company operations it is used for the construction of secondary roads and as a lining material for various operational features. A Gatch Pit is created by open pit mining of the gatch layer near surface. These pits can vary from 2 – 10m in depth from natural ground level. Pits and contaminated soil are shared out among LOT A, LOT B and LOT C located within a Company controlled restricted area. Data file: 170352881.doc

As part of the works, temporary irrigation systems will be installed at selected areas of the Site. Irrigation systems will create suitable conditions to facilitate and support the initial growth of native plant species until they have established. The irrigation system shall be a low cost, low technology, reusable, vertical deep pipe irrigation system which is hyper efficient in terms of water usage. This system delivers the minimal amount of water required for plant establishment directly to the root zone in a controlled, measurable manner. In addition, it eliminates the deposition of surface salts which is detrimental to ecological rehabilitation and which is typical of conventional drip irrigation systems. In comparative studies of irrigation system types, deep pipe systems of this type have been proven to be the most effective in restoring native vegetation to semi arid and arid environments.
