ASME IX Qualification Standard for Welding & Brazing Procedures, Welders, Brazers, and Welding and Brazing Operators Para. QW-100.1 states: 'Any WPSs used by a manufacturer or contractor that will have responsible operational control of production welding shall be a WPS that has been qualified by that manufacturer or contractor in accordance with Article II, or it shall be an AWS Standard Welding Procedure Specification (SWPS) listed i n Appendix E and adopted by that manufacturer or contractor contractor in accordance with Article V.'
Provided a welder was certificated according to ASME BPVC Section IX in company A, but now he want to work in company B(different company from A, but both of two companies are in charge of products in compliance with ASME Code) as a ASME welder. Does he need to conduct performance qualification according to Section IX again? Or alternatively, is there any choice for him to avoid the requalification? Thanks very much.
Yes he would need to re-qualify as per ASME Sec IX QW-300.2. A welder takes a performance test and qualifies to that particular company's qualified procedure. The only way a welder may not need to re-qualify is QW-300.2 (c) "If in an organization effective operational control of the welder performance qualification for two or more companies of different names exists, the companies involved shall describe in the Quality Control system, the operational control of performance qualifications. In this case requalification of welders and welding operators within the companies of such an organization will not be required, provided all other requirements of Section IX are met." If you are performing work to ASME code as dictated in a contract then you must have a QA/QC Manual that states how you will control tests, materials, etc. ______________________________ _____________________________________________ ______________________________ ________________________ _________
