EARTHBOUND (Part One) So much is being written and published nowadays in regard to manifesta tions of an unusual nature that appear to be in accordance with the doctr ine of spiritualism, or in in keeping wi th the nature of the so-called spirit demons tration s of the the seance room, room, that many of our members ask us to be a little more specific in regard to the knowledge which the Rosicrucians possess relating to these things. In the the earli er Degr ees of our work, the student is very def ini tel y told to guard himself against accepting the spiritualistic doctrines and to wait to investigate these matters until after he has become more famil iar wit h the the Rosi cruc ian teachings. teachings. It is further intimated in many pa rts of our ou r te ac hi ng s that many, man y, if not no t mos t of the de mo ns tr at io ns or unusual manif estati ons that that occur withou t fraud in the the seance room, room, or in experimental circles, can be be better explained by laws and principles principles distinctly different from those offered by the spiritualistic movement. Somewhere in our teachings we also make the very definite statement that spirits of depar ted persons do not return to earth and in this this way manifest their identity in order to prove the immortality of the soul soul. . That very definite statement often causes confusi on in the minds of those who have heretofore believed many of the spiritualistic claims, and it is a startling statement to those who have had or still have occasional experiences that seem to be spiritualistic. Hereto fore we have refrained fro m any general general explanation of our at ti tude, tude, except in the the hig he r teach ings in the uppe r Degr ees of the work; for we have not wanted to introduce the more profound principles in volved in these manif estat ions into the work of the the lower Degrees. In fact, fact, it is is almo st i mpos sibl e for the the student in the lower Degr ees to comprehend the real principles involved in these unusual manifestations of the continued existence of departed persons, without having become very familiar with many other laws and principles of the spiritual world and of the Cosmic. Cosmic. This is is why the subject of of such mani fest atio n has been treated so so briefly in the the earlier work. work. However, we are con tinually aware of the fact that in the present Aquarian cycle such ma m a ni fe st at io ns ar e be co mi ng mo re fr eq uent ue nt , mo re de fi ni te , an d mo re c o n vincing to the persons who are inclined to believe in the present-day tenets of spiritualism. Therefore, in deal ing with one phase of this this matter in the the present article , we hope to make pl ain one or or two two princi ples w hi ch have to do with one of the most frequent forms of manifestations common to those who are rela ted in some some way to perso ns who have passe d on. on. It is wi th con sid era ble anxiety, however, that that we open this this subjec t even to this this extent, for we do not want, a nd hope we shall not have, a flood of i n quiries asking for further illumination and instruction in regard to the other principles which are not dealt with in this particular arti cle. cle. In other words, we hope and pray that that our membe rs will real ize that we cannot present a complete outline of the higher teachings deal
ing with the laws and principles involved in the process of transition, and the conditions that surround personalities after transition, in this discourse or in personal communications. Pr om all all this this, , our new members may proper ly judge judge that the Rosicr ucians do not agree with the present-day spiritualistic claims, and that they know just how and why certain persons have such unusual experiences as they consider to be spiritualistic or proofs of the spiritualistic con tentions . In order to presen t in this arti cle the several princip les w hi ch we wish to make plain and understandable, we believe it is best to bring them forth in the form of incidents in a story that is not wholly fic titious, and not even par tly a produc t of of imagination, The princip al thread of the following story is true and correct, as some of our me mb er s know, but na me s and an d pl ac es ha ve be en cha nge d, an d a few u n i m po rt an t in ci dent de nt s or de ta il s in tr od uc ed f ic ti ti ou sl y in or de r to he lp ma ke pl a in the law s be in g pres pr es ente en ted. d. To begin the story, we will step backward to the days of the troubles wit h Nicar agua in 1927 1927> > whe n some of of the United States marines were sent into foreign lands to help the American government maintain its pl an s and an d desir de sir es. es . Am on g the ma ri ne s wa s one li eu te na nt w h o m we shall call Hen ry Smith Smith. . He was a brave, brave, clean-cut, educat ed youn g man wit h good military training, a student of the popular sciences and arts, and a reade r of of many of of the the presen t-day systems of higher thought. thought. We ca n not say that that he was a mystic, mystic, a philosopher , or even a real real student of the spiritual or psychological systems of philosophy; nor was he partic ularl y inclined inclined toward religion or the Church. Sometime toward the the close of 1927, he disappeared during one of the skirmishes and was re po rt ed as ha vi ng be en ki ll ed in wa rf ar e so me wh er e on the ba tt le line, but most mo st li ke ly du ri ng an ex pe di ti on ac ro ss the li ne s Int o the enem en emy' y' s fields. fields. The report of his dea th was recorded at Washin gton, and there the story of his career ended. Hen ry Smit h had a cousin, Mrs. Mrs. J ohn Jones, l iving in Kans as City. Mrs. Mrs. Jones was fairly well acquainted with her cousin, had followed his ex pe di ti o n into Ni ca ra gu a w i t h mu ch int ere st, and an d was so re ly gr ie ve d wh e n she was notified that he had lost his earthly life during the warfare. She was also unhappy in the knowledge that his body had not been recov ered and retur ned to his home, home, that no prope r burial ce remon y had been given him, and that there was no tomb to mark his burial place. No w we mus t pass pa ss a few fe w ye ar s an d come co me up to the ti me wh er e we fi nd that Mrs . Jo nes ne s has be co me a mo re pr of ic ie nt an d pr of ou nd st uden ud en t of sp i r i t ual philosophy, and in order to enlarge and improve her understanding, she has become a membe r of the AMORC. No attempt has been made on her pa rt du ri ng the ye ar s in te rv en in g to fin d th ro ug h spir sp ir it ua li st ic , occult, mystical, or othe r means of a psychic natur e the loc ati on of of her cour sin's body, body, nor the exact time and nature of his transition. In fact Mrs. Jones was not spiritualistically inclined and did not be lieve that any really definite information regarding her cousin or the nature of his transition could be obtained through the mediumship of another person.
However, during the course of one one of her experiments in meditation, concen trati on, and spirit ual study, study, she had occasion, as do all of our me mb er s at the be gi nn in g of thei th ei r firs fi rs t less le ss on s, to sit in the q u i e t ness of her little ro om at at home, home, whi ch she had set set aside as a sanctum for study and high er thought thought. . During the the course of her medi tati on and co ne en tr at io n, she had occa sio n to to look into into the large mirr or that was be fo re her, an d wh il e lo ok in g into in to he r ow n eyes she wa s su rp ri se d to see her features changing and the the face face of of her cousin appearing. appearing. She had not expected or anticipated any such incident as this, and was con side rabl y startled. Aft er the first few minute s of surprise, she re gained her proper poise and did not permit herself to speculate, analyze, or quest ion what was occurring, occurring, and, and, therefore, therefore, did not create any delutions tions which might accoun t for what followed. In a few few moments she she seemed to hear the voice of her cousin speaking to her as from the mirro mi rro r, an d she no ti ce d that tha t th ere er e seeme se eme d to be som e mo ve me nt of the lips in the face that smiled sweetly at her. her. The voice was indefinite, and did not seem to have the timbre and qualities of the human voice; and as she reca lled the incid ent later, later, she was not quite sure that there were really any sounds connect ed wit h what she she seemed to hear, hear, but ra th er a n in ne r or me nt al f o r m of he ar in g co nv ey ed a me ss ag e to her he r wh ic h she believ ed at the time was in the form of of spok en words. The message conveyed in this manner was to the effect that the cousin was in a hospital somewhere In Nicaragua, evident ly unknow n in identity identity to those around him, and his location unknown to the American authori ties ties. . There seemed to be an intimation that he was in pain and s uff er ing, more or less unconscious and unable to reveal his identity to the pe r so ns ar ou nd h i m or send se nd an y c o m m un i ca ti o n to the A m e r i c an offi of fi ce rs, rs , so that he might be dis cov ered and returne d to the the Uni ted States. His final words seemed to be a plea that the cousin, Mrs. Jones, have a sear ch instituted, his wherea bou ts learned, and aid sent to him at once. once. The whole incident re awakened Mrs. Mrs. Jones' Jones' interest in the events of 1927, and naturally inspired her to begin an immediate investigation. Once again Mrs. Mrs. Jones prov ed her lack of of interest in the ordinary spi r itualistic methods by refraining from taking up the matter with mediums or those those connected with spiritualistic spiritualistic activities. activities. After considerable thought, thought, she she decided to write to the the Wel far e Departmen t of AMORC, AMORC, ex pl a in the en ti re inci in ci dent de nt , and an d as k its he lp in se cu ri ng an y po ss ib le ver if ic at ion of the stra strang nge e mes sage that lin gere d in her mind. mind. The Welfare Department of AMORC naturally thought of the many natural, normal means of securing additional infor matio n for for Mrs. Jones, without resort ing to to any supernormal or supernatural processes whatsoever. It is a practi ce wit h the the various departmen ts of AMORC to deal deal with na tu ral law and natural, normal principles whenever it is believed that they will serve, rather than resort to any speculative processes in securing defin ite infor matio n in regard to to earthly condit ions and and affairs. affairs. This This is not an indication that the officers and workers of AMORC have more faith in the laws and principles of nature than they do in the laws and pr in ci pl es of the h ig h e r rea lms , but ex pe ri en ce has ha s ta ught ug ht all al l of us that many of the most practical results desired by our members are more efficiently attained or secured by the application of our various mate rial methods which constitute the rational system of the Welfare Depart-
me nt s of ou r or ga ni za ti on . Th er ef or e, Mrs. Jone Jo ne s was di re ct ed to c o m mu ni ca te w i t h one on e of ou r se rvic rv ic e vo lu nt ee rs in the Ca na l Zone, Zo ne, wh o was wa s closely associated with governmental affair affairs. s. Upon receipt of the letter, Captain Brown at the Canal Zone wrote Mrs. Jones that he was glad to be of service in such a matter as this, and that he would institute an investigation of the governmental records, as well as investigate the marines who were still situated in or near Ni ca ra gu a. C a p t ai n Br ow n fu rt he r st at ed that he re al iz ed tha t the nature of the incident which she related in her letter and the manner in which she had received the strange message purporting to come from hert cous in were things whic h he could not not reveal or explain to to gove rn me nt of fi ce rs or to the of fi ce rs of the mari ma ri ne s, an d that he wo ul d have ha ve to handle the matt er with cons iderab le diplomacy, diplomacy, but that that regardless of the time or expense involved, he wou ld kee p at the case until he ma de a de fi ni te re po rt to her. This Th is at ti tu de on the par t of C ap ta i n Brown is typical of the service being rendered by thousands of our mem ber s wh o ar e al wa ys an xi ou s to ca rr y out the idea id eals ls of co -o pe ra ti ve wor k in our organization, in the true true spirit of brotherhoo d. Cap tai n Br o wn ’s inves tigati on finally resulted in a defini te report from Was hing ton that so far far as their official records we re concerned, Lieutenant Henry Smith had been killed in action and unquestionably bu ri ed in en em y gr ou nd s. Th ei r files fi les in this ca se we re clos clos'e 'ed. d. The officers of the marines stationed near the place of the scene of action report ed that their records li kewise stated defini tely the the death of Lieutenant Henry Smith and his burial in enemy grounds. Captain Brown was not satisfied with these reports, however, although he communicated them promptly to Mrs. Mrs. Jones, Jones, a nd merely intim ated that that he would make further inquiries. inquiries. He then wrote to AMORC for further advic e and guidance in his investigations. Know ing that certa in laws laws and principles of the spiritual or Cosmic would permit of unusual mani festat ion at at time times, s, we took his parti cular case as one which would enable us to again test the knowledge contained in our higher teachings. A ser ies ie s of ex pe ri me nt s we re c on du ct ed by the staff st aff of of fi ce rs at the Grand Lodge, Lodge, and the followi ng inf ormati on was secured t hrough contact wit h the the Cosmic records. An A n i nv es ti ga ti on wa s co nd uc te d by one of the su pe ri or of fi ce rs to d e termine the nature of the affair, for it was evident that Lieutenant Smith would die, die, and his comp anio n had alre ady passed on. Real izin g that the Amer ican s would make an investigation, or that that in the event of an exchange of prisoners, prisoners, if Lieut enant Smith did not die, die, the whole affa ir would add add to the the bitterness of the diplomat ic relations b etween the two two countries, it was decide d to change the unifo rm of of Lieut enant Henry Smith and garb him in native costume while in the hospital, and thus thus hide his identity. identity. Dur ing such periods of rational thought as were possible, he thought of his relatives in various parts of the the Un ite d States, and what means he might take to to commu nicat e wit h them and let let them know where he was. was. His tra n sition finally occurred while he was partly conscious of his surround ings, ings, and of his perp lexi ties and desires. His body was buried in foreign soil in the costume of a native, and his true identity kept from the records. The third member of the party, who had been lamed and partly wounded, returned to American soil, and reported that he had seen Smith Injured and his companion severely wounded, and had watched them being captured pr a c ti c al ly de ad wh il e hi di ng be hi nd some som e rock s. L at er in ve st ig at io ns on the part part of the marines failed to find find th em among the captured p ri s oners of war, and a story current among the natives was to the effect that several American marines had been injured and had died in barracks hospitals. It was upon such reports as this this that that the the Amer ican go ve rn me nt ha d es ta bl is he d th ei r re po rt s of the fina fi nal l pa ss in g an d d i s a p p e a r ance of Lieutenant Henry Smith. Obtaining this definite Information regarding the entire incident would seem to close the story; but there remains this question to be answered: W hy did di d a pe rs o na li ty pu r po rt in g to be H e n r y Sm it h a p pa r en tl y c o m m u n i cate with his cousin, Mrs. Jones, and claim that he or it was in a hos pit al, al , sti ll ali ve, an d de si r in g di sc ov er y an d re le as e? In ot he r wo rds, rd s, we can gen era lize this quest ion into one one as follows: Why Is it it that the the seeming personality of a person who has passed on will apparently appear be fo re the co ns ci ou s ne ss of a p er so n li vi ng he re on earth, ear th, an d cr eate ea te the impression that the personality is still living and desires help? You will note that this question does not include the how or why of the appearance of personalities claiming to be certain individuals, nor does it include the how and why of the means of creating such messages or impressions in the consciousness of a person living here on earth. These points we are purposely eliminating from this incident; first, be ca us e they th ey ar e not im po rt an t to the story, stor y, or the ac tu al cas e in hand, hand , and second, second, because such points points involve principles whi ch are clearly pr es en te d in the un fo ld in g te ac hi ng s of the hi gh e r De gr ee s of AM ORC

"EARTH-BOUND" (Part Two) No w it has be en fo un d th ro ug h long lon g ex pe ri en ce and an d hu nd re ds of e x p e r i me nt s made ma de by the ma st er ex pe ri me nt er s in our or ga ni za ti on in ma n y lands and for man y years, years, that wh en a per son passes out of this this ear thl y life under conditions and in circumstances that are unusual, mysterious, strange, or fraught with important consequences, and especially con nected with occurrences that should be revealed to some others in order that the fog may be lifted, the clouds dispelled, and the true facts revealed, he remains mentally or psychically "earth-bound" for an in defin ite l eng th of time. time. In other words, wh en a perso n passes out of this life as did Lieutenant Henry Smith, with a dominating thought and an insistent desire to communicate to some friend or relative the reve lation of his identity, location and cause of passing, he carries with him into spiritual spiritual consciousness this this great anxiety to communicate or contact some living person and reveal the information that he believes is of an important nature. nature. This intense intense desire associated with living living pe rs ons on s an d e ar th ly co ndit nd it io ns, ns , and ha vi ng as its crux cru x a co mm un ic at io n wi th persons persons on the the earth plane, plane, causes causes the the perso nali ty or spiritual spiritual mi nd of the soul to be bo un d to the ea rt h' s au ra or the e a r t h ’s mi nds . Aga in, in , in ot he r word wo rds, s, we m a y say that this inte in te ns e de sire si re to c om mu ni cate with someone else living on the earth plane acts as a mental cord that holds the person bound to other earthly minds for a period that ends on ly wh en the desire is broug ht into a rea liz ati on or the the intense wish is fulfilled. It has been found that such "earth-bound" persons continue to project their thoughts and radiate their ideas along the mental cord that holds them to the the eart h minds until they find an opp ortunity of making plain and definite the thoughts and message which they believe must be commu nicated. In ma ny cases it has been found that that such a cond itio n on on the the par t of one wh o ha s pa ss ed on is an agon ag on iz ing, in g, to rm en ti ng one, or in other words anything but a peaceful and joyous joyous condition. condition. It has been defin itel y establish ed that such persons are are not aware aware of the the fact that that they are binding themselves to an earthly contact by holding the thought which constitutes their great desire, but they realize only one thing-they must relieve themselves of this this in format ion or the the facts c onst i tuting the message they wi sh to give in order that they may be freed from the only heavy, painful, material emotion that weighs down their consciousness and holds holds them enslaved to eart hly contac contact. t. We are no t pr ep ar ed to say sa y that tha t it is su ch a co nd it io n that tha t is re sp on sible for all of the peculiar manifestations that have been attributed to so-called ghosts or spirits, spirits, even whe n such manif estat ions have been pr oved ov ed not to be fr au du le nt or due to na tu ra l c a u s e s ; but we do kn ow that thousands of persons have passed from this life under such circum stances and in conditions of being "earth-bound" as have caused them to come come before the the i nves tigati ons of the the most expe rie nce d of our Mas ter wor kers in ma ny lands. lands. In a grea t ma ny of of these these cases, cases, the intense intense
desire to communicate with someone is associated with some crime that has been committed by the one who has departed or with some injustice or unfair circumstance that originated in the actions of the departed one, one, and now rests as a bur den upon some some living person. As might be be expected, it was found in eve ry case that the the "e arth-bo und" p erso n was att empt ing to do that that wh ic h seemed the the most spir itual thing to do. And in most cases cases, , the the desire to communicate was closely associated wi th an intense desire to relieve someone else of unnecessary suffering or un justified accusations. The next peculiar part of such a situation is that the mind of a per son who passes on wit h such intense desires and thus thus becomes "earth"earth bo un d" un til the co nd it io n is re li ev ed los es all sen se of the el em en ts of time and space space as as app rec iate d by our our objective, ear thl y senses. senses. We can thoroughly understand how a spiritual consciousness living in a spiritual realm, ev en though close to the the earth and its its envelope, woul d have no consciousness of space or distance, and certainly not of earth ly dis tan ces in the the same same sense that we consi der th em dur ing our earthly lives. lives. Sur ely such a pers on wou ld have no consc iousn ess of tim time, e, for there would be no past, present, or future in the relation of incidents to one another. This explains one of the strange and most puzzling points in connection with the messages or communications which such personalities eventually transmit to some some mind on the the eart h plane. plane. The message or communi catio n that they radia te and cause to be i mplanted in the hum an con sciou snes s is In the the terms of of the the "NOW." It is is en tir el y free fr om any rela ti on ship wi th the time in elem ents of days, weeks, months, or years of the past. W ha t e v e r was wa s the th ou gh t or me ss ag e th at the mi nd of this p e r sonality concentrated upon during its last hours of consciousness on the the ear th plane, plane, it is unchan ged in terms of time or rel ati on sh ip to space, distance, and period after transition. In the the case case of Lie ute nant He nry Smith, Smith, his last earthly, conscious thoughts whi ch he wish ed to comm unic ate were probably, "I am here in a hospital, suffering, suffering, waiting, and hoping to be be dis cove red and taken ba ck to m y ow n co un try. tr y. " Yo u wi ll no te that that tha t me ss ag e or that th at co m mu m u n ic at io n is of the pr es en t tim e or of the "NOW" "NOW " and an d it was wa s ca rr ied over wi th the the con sciousness into the the spiritual real m withou t modi fi cation or alteration. And even though days, weeks, months, and years pass, pas s, the th ou gh t co nt in ue s in the "NOW" in its fo rm of ex pr es si on , and would therefore reach the mind of a person living on the earth as coming fro m one who was speak ing in the the present tense and and, , therefore, of the the "NOW." This is is wh y Mrs. Jones believ ed that the the messa ge int i ma te d tha t he r co us in was wa s sti ll living liv ing, , st il l in a ho spit sp it al , and 'sti 'still ll seeking to be found and rescued, whereas in truth he had been in the spiritual world for over a year. This muc h may be said in regard to the the methods or processes for b rin g ing ing such commu nica tio ns to the the mind s of ear thl y beings. We have said that it is a fact that the spirits or souls of departed persons do not ret urn to ea rth and enter rooms, and famil y circles, circles, or seance groups, or clothe clothe themselves wi th material form to perf orm physical feats. feats.
However, we do say and make understandable in our teachings, how the per p er so na li ty that has de pa rt ed m a y and can pr oj ec t its th ough ou gh ts or a representation of itself to the psychic consciousness of persons still living on thi this s earth plane. In such such projections, nothing of a materia l or spiritual essence departs from the person in the spiritual realm, or comes to to the the ear th plane. All that passe s betwe en the the one above and and the one below are thought vibrations like unto the thought vibrations that pass between the spiritual, psychic minds of two living persons on the the earth plane who are are in telepathic or psychic c ommuni cation wit h each other. Such "earth-bound" personalities seek every possible opportunity to reach the minds of those who are receptive or ready to receive the com mu m u ni ca t io n that tha t is be in g radi ra di at ed, ed , b y me nt al at tu ne me nt, nt , so that tha t it m ay be ob je ct iv el y re al iz ed an d pa ss ed al on g to the in te nded nd ed pers pe rs on. on . In mo st cases, cas es, the re su lt s soug so ught ht for fo r are ac hi ev ed th ro ug h a co mb in at io n of unusual circumstances by whi ch one one or more persons living on the the earth plane are temporarily or momentarily attuned to psychic influx or Cosmic Conscious ness. In such rare mom ent s these these persons, if they are in any way related to or or known to the spiritual p ersonality, wi ll receive the message, communication, or impression that is being di rected. Ver y often such attune ment or state state of rece ptiv ity on the the part of ear thl y per sons oc curs durin g sleep; but it it is is more perfect, com plete pl ete, , and o bj ec ti ve ly re ca ll e d or r em em be re d w he n the re ce pt iv it y o c curs during periods of meditation or concentration in a waking state. In this particular case Mrs. Jones was highly receptive because of the special intensity of her experiment and the sacredness of it, associated as it it was with matte rs most hol y to her. her. Her mind was also free from anticipations, analysis, speculation, and indefinite ideas whi ch might have inhibited her psychic reception, reception, or beclo uded her impressions. It was a magni ficen t op port unit y for for the the persona lity of Hen ry Smith; Smith; for for Mr s.
