8 HOUSE Copenhagen, Denmark
BIG Bjarke Ingels Group
BIG is a group of architects, designers and thinkers operating within the fields of architecture, urbanism, interior design, landscape design, product design, research and development with offices in New York City, City, Copenhagen and London. BIG has created a reputation for completing buildings buildings that are as programmatically programmatically and technically innovative as they are cost and resource conscious. In our architectural production, production, we demonstrate a high sensitivity to the particular demands of site, context, and program. BIG’s recently completed projects include VIA 57 WEST (2016), 1200 Intrepid (2016), the Grove at Grand Bay (2016), the Danish Maritime Museum (2013), and the Superkilen urban park (2012). We are working on a wide range of projects from residential work in San Francisco and Vancouver Vancouver to culturally significant work for the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and postdisaster resiliency master plans in New York. As designers of the built environment, we test the effects of scale and the balance of programmatic mixtures on the social, economic, and ecological outcome of a given site. Like a form of programmatic alchemy, alchemy, we create architecture by mixing conventional ingredients ingredients such as living, leisure, recreation, working, parking, and shopping to realize imaginative and responsible solutions. Buildings are never stand-alone entities. Instead, they are part of a larger network, a campus tied together by rich public spaces and the complex urban context. We believe that the social component of our urban space is an extremely important ingredient in what makes humanity tick. We seek cross-generational cross-generational social engagement and hope through our projects, like the 8 House, to have transformed these neighborhoods into places to meet, to walk, to dine and share in one others lives. Aligned with the Moriyama RAIC International Prize’s values of inclusiveness, equality, respect, and justice, we are pleased to submit our 8 House project to be considered for this honor.

ORIGINAL MASTER PLAN
TRADITIONAL PARTITIONING OF A VARIETY OF PROGRAM
The 8 House is a mixed-use residential building located in the neighborhood of Ørestad South, outside of Copenhagen, situated on the edge of a canal and with views of the Kalvebrod Fælled fields. With 475 units that vary in size and layout, the building meets the needs of people in all of life’s stages: young and old; families and single people; growing and shrinking families. At the 8 House, closeness thrives in the 667,300 SF building. The tranquility of suburban life goes hand-in-hand with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist. 8 House is where common areas and facilities merge with personal life. Instead of dividing the different functions of the building in separate blocks, they have been layered horizontally. Housing rests above public, commercial, and retail programs—such as offices, a kindergarten, a café—that unfold at the base of the building.
LAYERED PROGRAM
COMMUNAL CENTER & ACCESS THROUGH THE BUILDING
The building’s 535,000- SF housing program offers three kinds of accommodation: townhouses, apartments, and penthouses. With a mix of suburban tranquility and urban energy, the townhouse and its open housing is ideal for the modern family, while singles and couples may find the apartments located above more attractive. Penthouses function as a playground with fantastic views over the canal and Southern Copenhagen. HEIGHT VARIATION FOR SUNLIGHT & VIEWS
UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY
8 HOUSE PROJECT DESCRIPTION The 8 House’s universally accessible sidewalk is a major artery linking each of the residential units and connecting to the urban fabric on the ground floor-- you can bike all the way up to your penthouse! Social life, spontaneous encounters, and neighborly interactions happen on this sidewalk resulting in a lively, three-dimensional, urban neighborhood. The bow-shaped building creates two distinct spaces, separated by the bow’s ‘knot’ which hosts the communal facilities including a library, public atrium with a grand stair, and communal terrace. This ‘knot’ is where the building intersects itself: a 30-FT wide passage penetrates the building, allowing access through the site. 8 House is a continuous wall of sloping blocks which rise and fall to let sunlight and fresh air into the two cores while giving residents and office workers views out.
SECTION
.
. . . . . . . .
8 House has two sloping green roofs totaling over 18,000 SF, which are strategically placed to reduce the urban heat island effect as well as to visually tie it back to the adjacent farmlands towards the south. The adjacent canal is frequently used by residents, locals and visitors for kayaking during good weather and ice skating during Copenhagen’s inevitable sub-zero winters. 8 House’s green roofs harvest the rainwater which is collected in a storm water management system to be used for irrigating the surrounding landscape. All collected surface water is led through the building and into the surrounding canals to prevent unnecessary usage of the district sewer system. 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous promenade and cycling path up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city, where business and housing co-exist.

8 HOUSE MEDIA STATEMENT 8 House stacks all ingredients of a lively urban neighborhood into horizontal layers of typologies connected by a continuous, universally accessible promenade up to the 10th floor creating a three-dimensional urban neighborhood where suburban life merges with the energy of a big city. Its bow shape allows apartments to benefit from sunlight, air, and views while commercial spaces merge with life on the street. The building’s unique form, paired with its location next to the Copenhagen Canal and the Kalvebod Fælled’s protected fields, offer a variety of shared spaces, creating a sense of camaraderie and community for its users.

“It is not a coincidence that the world’s best housing is again located in Ørestad. The best Danish and international architects have utilized the breadth of Ørestad’s master plan to create unique buildings such as the 8 House. It is something that all of Denmark can be proud of.” - Jens Kramer Mikkelsen, President of CPH City & Port

In the 8 House, whether a pedestrian, cyclist or wheelchair-bound tenant, all can fluidly transport oneself from the sidewalk to the 10th floor penthouse on a sloped path featuring a brilliant pattern derived from accessibility requirements. The 8 House achieves a level of invisibility in which accessibility is ubiquitous to all who need and does not ostracize users.

“The 8 House masterfully recreates the horizontal social connectivity and interaction of the streets of a village neighborhood through a series of delightful accessible ramps in a mixed use, multifamily housing project. The skillful shaping of the mass of the facility provides an invigorating sculptural form while creating the ramped ‘pedestrian’ street system and providing full depth dwelling units which are filled with light and views. ” - AIA 2012 National Honor Award jury

“We have a team called 8 Support, consisting of 4 or 5 people. When I moved to this place in 2011, I realized that people here were very busy and very occupied, especially the families with small children. And then I thought, I am a retired person and I have plenty of time, why not help these busy people with their practicalities in their flats...
... I think it is originating in the feeling of community and solidarity in the 8 House... Somehow it’s a function of the architecture. You feel for the people here and you want to help them if you can.” - Per, 8 House Resident & 8 Support Member*
