was known as “Nablus Gate” since travelers heading to Nablus would depart from it. In centuries past, carriages would wait there to take travelers to Nablus. The British called it “Damascus Gate” since many travelers would continue on to Damascus from there. This shows the importance of the gate in those days. In Roman times, a large victory pillar stood near the gate. Distances were measured from the pillar to cities far from Jerusalem. Although the pillar itself has not been located, its original position is seen in the famous Medva map. Because of this, Arabs still call this gate מוּדַע-לֶ אבּ אָבּ “The Pillar Gate.” Today the gate is mainly used by Muslims living in the Muslim Quarter or by Jews from nearby

These letters have a double role: as consonants and as part of the nikud symbols (as vowels). For example: יתוֹןִע - the letter ‘י is part of the chirik preceding it and is not pronounced as a ‘y’ sound. In the word ילד, the ‘ יfunctions as a consonant and is pronounced yeh. In punctuated Hebrew, the letters י, ו, ה,א which do not contain nikud symbols, are not pronounced as consonants. They are silent.
