The word יוֹןְַנ( קkanyon), mall, is a relatively new one in the Hebrew language. Until about 30 years ago, there weren’t actually any malls in Israel, so people didn’t need a word for them! The word is based on the root letters ה-נ-ק meaning to buy. There is another hebrew word that looks and sounds exactly the same: יוֹןְנ ַק, which means canyon . However, since Israelis don’t really use the word canyon on a daily basis, very few people mix the two words up (or show up at a

." א רָקְ ט וֹ מ "ַה א תֶ נוֹתְק ִ צ ה לֶ רוֹ יקִני ָ רִ אָמ ֶ ָה ָב א ָצ ַה
is much older than that. בֶרכֶ even appears as far back as the Book of Genesis. The first time it appears, it is mentioned along with the horsemen, שׁיםִָ פּרָ , that left Egypt with Joseph in Genesis 50:9. In Exodus 14:7, the word appears in a description of the Egyptian vehicles that chased the Israelites as they left Egypt and headed towards Israel. In total, בֶרכֶ appears 65 times in the Bible. That’s almost enough to make a traffic jam! Other words based on the root ב-כ-ר include the following:
carriage - merkava - הָבָרכְּ מֶ

These letters have a double role: as consonants and as part of the nikud symbols (as vowels). For example: יתוֹןִע - The letter ‘ יis part of the chirik preceding it and is not pronounced as a ‘y’ sound. In the word ילד, the ‘ יfunctions as a consonant and is pronounced yeh. In punctuated Hebrew, the letters י, ו, ה, אwhich do not contain nikud symbols, are not pronounced as consonants. They are silent.

פּ אָהֵ
One of the most sensitive mitzvot in the Bible is called אָהֵפּ. Wealthy landowners are commanded to leave a corner of their fields unharvested, so that poor people can gather grain for themselves and their families without becoming beggars. אָהֵ פּmeans edge or corner, e.g., the furthest edge of the field. The long, curly sidelocks which ultra-religious Jews leave unshaven at the sides of their heads, are called אוֹתֵ( פּ pe’ot ). They do not shave this section because the Bible specifies not to shave “the corners of one’s head”.

It means to mix or to combine two things together - in this case, politics and sports. The meaning of the Hebrew word
בֶר ֶ( עerev), is related to this root. בֶר ֶ עmeans evening, and the word comes from the concept that evening is a mixture of day and night.
