Los transistores presentan una gran importancia en la electrónica de potencia, sobre todo para mando y regulación.

ESTRUCTURA DEL TRANSISTOR BIPOLAR En los transistores bipolares, Fig. 1, existen dos tipos de portadores de carga, los electrones y los huecos. Distinguimos dos tipos de transistores, los pnp y los npn, según cual sea el orden de sucesión de las diferentes zonas.

La Fig. 2 a nos muestra cómo deben aplicarse teóricamente las tensiones necesarias para el funcionamiento del transistor. No obstante, en la práctica se emplea el circuito indicado en la Fig. 2 b, aunque esto no modifica el funcionamiento del transistor. La Fig. 2 nos muestra además que la unión pn entre base y emisor se polariza en sentido directo y la unión pn entre base y colector, en sentido inverso. La tensión entre colector y base UBE debe ser considerablemente mayor que la tensión entre base y emisor UBE

Vamos a explicar el funcionamiento del transistor con ayuda del experimento Nº 1. El experimento nos muestra que: Cuando UBE aumenta por encima de 0,5V circulan una corriente de base y una de colector. La intensidad de la corriente de colector depende de U BE y de IB, aumentando cuando éstas aumentan. La intensidad de colector I C, es mucho mayor que la de base IB. Explicaremos a continuación los resultados del experimento. El circuito base - emisor de un transistor presenta como ya sabemos una unión pn. Si la tensión aplicada en sentido directo U BE es mayor que la tensión de difusión circulará una corriente de electrones del emisor a la base del transistor npn. El colector del transistor, cargado positivamente a causa de la tensión UCE, atraerá a la mayor parte de los electrones que se encuentren en la delgado zona de la base arrastrándolos a través de la unión pn entre base colector. Por consiguiente, circulará una corriente de colector.

La intensidad de colector puede gobernarse mediante U BE y mediante IB . Sin embargo, como la corriente de base sólo empieza a circular cuando existe la correspondiente tensión base-emisor UBE , deberá aportarse una potencia de mando UBE . IB para gobernar la corriente de colector. Pero, como esta potencia es muy pequeña, podrá despreciarse en la mayoría de los casos.

Hasta ahora sólo nos hemos ocupado del comportamiento y de las características de un transistor npn. Las consideraciones anteriores son también aplicables a los transistores pnp, sin más que considerar que ahora las corrientes están constituidas por huecos. Para simplificar el cálculo de los circuitos de transistores se determinó arbitrariamente el sentido de las corrientes de modo que todas circulen hacia el interior del transistor. Las corrientes que circulen en sentido contrario al definido se caracterizarán con un signo negativo delante de su símbolo o de su valor numérico.

1.2. VALORES LÍMITES DE LOS TRANSISTORES Al utilizar los transistores no deben sobrepasar determinados valores límites de tensión, intensidad y potencia. Estos valores suelen estar indicados en las hojas de datos de los fabricantes.

Suelen indicarse los valores límites para la tensión base-emisor, para la tensión colector - base y para la tensión colector - emisor. También suelen indicarse las máximas intensidades permisibles de las corrientes de base y de colector. Durante su funcionamiento los transistores no deben calentarse excesivamente. El calentamiento es debido a la potencia eléctrica transformada en calor en el transistor, o sea a sus pérdidas totales de potencia. Ptot que se calculan con la fórmula. PTOT = UCE . IC + UBE . IB Para evitar un calentamiento excesivo del transistor no debe sobrepasarse la máxima potencia de pérdidas indicada por el fabricante en sus hojas de datos (Fig. 9).

Al elegir la tensión de polarización de base quedan fijados también la corriente IB y el punto de trabajo del circuito base-emisor, o sea, el punto de trabajo del circuito de entrada. La Fig. 11 nos muestra las características más importantes del transistor BD 130. Hemos trazado el punto de trabajo del circuito de entrada para una tensión de polarización de base U BE = 1,25V. Los transistores suelen funcionar con un resistor de trabajo R a conectado en serie en el circuito de colector. Por consiguiente, podremos trazar sobre las características de salida la correspondencia recta de trabajo para obtener el punto de trabajo del circuito de salida. La construcción de la recta de trabajo se efectúa de modo análogo a como lo hicimos con los diodos rectificadores. También podemos ver en la Fig. 11, la obtención exacta del punto de trabajo del circuito de salida así como la distribución de las tensiones en el transistor (U CE) y en la resistencia de trabajo (URA). Cuando varíe (UBE) también variarán los puntos de trabajo trabajo de los circuitos circuitos de entrada y salida.

TRANSISTOR COMO INTERRUPTOR Hemos ya puesto de manifiesto que la corriente de colector de un transistor puede gobernarse con ayuda de la tensión base-emisor. Por lo tanto, también puede utilizarse un transistor como conmutador. Para ello solamente cuando deba circular una corriente de colector se aplicará al transistor una tensión baseemisor en sentido directo. CIRCUITOS BASICOS DE AMPLIFICACIÓN Los transistores se utilizan con gran frecuencia para amplificar pequeñas tensiones alternas o continuas. A continuación vamos a ocuparnos en primer lugar del efecto amplificador del transistor.

3.3. AMPLIFICADOR DE TENSIÓN CONTINUA Los amplificadores de tensión continua pueden tener una o varias etapas. La Fig. 18 nos muestra un amplificador de dos etapas sin condensadores de acoplamiento. En este amplificador una tensión continua a la entrada también aparece amplificada a la salida. Este tipo de amplificadores se denomina amplificadores de tensión continua. El resistor de trabajo R a1 a1 forma junto con el transistor V1 el divisor de tensión de base para el transistor V2. Cuando varía la intensidad de colector de V1 al aplicar una tensión alterna o continua a la entrada del amplificador también variará la tensión colector - emisor de V1. Como esta tensión es a la vez la tensión de entrada de V2, también se desplazará el punto de trabajo de V2. Por tanto, variará la tensión emisor

Para controlar el flujo de corriente a través del canal se polariza la unión de la puerta inversamente, tal como se muestra en la Fig. 23. El polarizar inversamente la unión crea una zona sin portadores libres, estrechando el canal y por lo tanto disminuyendo la corriente entre drenador y surtidor, tal como se muestra en la Fig. 23 b. Si se aumenta la polarización inversa, el canal se hace más estrecho hasta llegar al estrangulamiento, tal como se muestra en la Fig. 23 c.
