CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
Social networking sites became the leading way of communication even
from the other side of the world to miles away from it. These sites serve
variety of services that entertains their users all over the world. From
the youngest possible user to the oldest one, everyone keeps an eye on
their own social network accounts wherein they can show to the people their
expressions about anything under the sun.
Student's use of social networking continues to create challenges and
issues for higher education professionals and keeping abreast of these
challenges has proved difficult because of the speed at which new
technologies are being introduced (Bugeja, 2006; Cariccioso, 2006; Finder,
2006; Quindlen, 2006; Shier, 2005).There is evidence that higher education
institutions have taken initiatives in disclosing information about online
social networking involvement to their students(Read et al., 2006).
According to Jenny Q. Ta, a blogger, social networks offer the
opportunity for people to re-connect with their old friends and
acquaintances, make new friends, trade ideas, share content and pictures,
and many other activities. Users can stay abreast of the latest global and
local developments, and participate in campaigns and activities of their
choice. Professionals use social media sites like LinkedIn to enhance their
career and business prospects. Students can collaborate with their peers to
improve their academic proficiency and communication skills. You can learn
about different cultures and societies by connecting with people in other
countries. "While nobody can deny that Facebook has altered
the landscape of social interaction, particularly among young people, we
are just now starting to see solid psychological research demonstrating
both the positives and the negatives," said Larry D. Rosen, PhD, professor
of psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills. From that the
researchers will conduct a study about the effects of social networking
sites to people's social lifestyle or how people interact/ communicate with
other people.
Statement of the Problem
This research seeks to determine the effects of social networking sites to
people's way of socialization.. We the researchers aim to answer the
following questions:
What is the profile of the respondents?
What is the academic performance of the respondents?
What are the negative effects of social networking sites to the academic
performance of the respondents?
Objectives of the Research
This research about the negative effects of social networking sites aims:
1 To know what are the negative effects of social networking sites to
students.
To enlighten those student users about the effects of using too much social
networking sites .
To know if these social networking sites affects the academic performance
of the students..
Significance of the Study
This study about the negative effects of social networking sites to the
academic performance of the students will be very beneficial to the
following:
* Students: Since almost all of the students are engaged in these social
networking sites this study will help them know how these social networking
sites affect them and somehow help them to use these social networking
sites properly.
* Parents: This study will help them teach their kids about possibilities
that will happen to them if they will always use social networking sites.
Scope and Limitation
The scope of the study is to find out how the social networking
sites affects the academic performance of the students. And also to find
out the negative effects of social networking sites to the students. For
this study, 30 different random people ages 16 and above studying at the
Technological Institute of the Philippines will be answering our surveys
regarding to the effects of social networking sites their academic
performance. The study will be held in the Technological Institute of the
Philippines. The researchers chose to conduct their survey on 30 random
people. The reason for this is to get a more accurate result of the survey
and also because the researches find people ages 16 and above as mature
enough to be able to answer the questions properly.
CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES
Socialization is a lifelong process during which we learn about social
expectations and how to interact with other people. In socializing we
learned many things that contributes to our well-being, behavior and how we
can fit into the society.
According to Smith (2013), although the famous Facebook site created by
Mark Zuckerberg dominates the social networking world today because of its
services that enables its users to post their thoughts, share their ideas,
play games and even talk with different people, these kind of sites started
from a simple form of online communication known as The Bulletin Board
System (BBS). This site might not be recognizable as a social networking
site because it does not have the services to offer to their users like
sharing or posting photos, but the main feature of this site is a large
chat room for different people getting to know each other. After the BBS,
came the World Wide Web in the mid-90s that has more attractive pages and
were made easier for people to visit. From then came the different top
networking sites known today that are used not only by the kids or
teenagers, but also the adults and the oldies.
According to Kabani (2011), there are three main reasons why people
join different social networking sites:
1. Identity
2. Connections
3. Community
The first on the list only signifies that people wants to showcase
who they are because social network says something about their users. The
second and third are common reasons why people joins these sites.
Connections are as easy as one, two, and three when you're in a social
networking site and in this way you can build or join a community wherein
you can feel that people cares for you or even know you for some things you
try to show them through the site.
According to Wilson (2013), although social networking sites do really have
positive impacts to an individual's life or even to the whole community,
too much using of these would begin to interfere with their lives wherein
he stated the psychologists refer this as social networking compulsion or
addiction. He listed some of the symptoms of being a social networking
addict and some of the most common are:
1. Spending too much hour daily in using it.
2. Losing sleep because of too much use of these sites.
3. Using these sites as an escape of the reality that is happening
around.
Knowing the symptoms would be really easy to anyone but trying to
stop the addiction of using these sites would not be so easy because some
people try to deny that they do have some of the symptoms due to their need
and want of using social networking sites in making their lives pass by day
to day.
According to Campaigns & Elections, Inc. (2010), Some 42 percent of online
adults are now on multiple social networking sites, according to the latest
numbers from the Pew Research Center, but Facebook still dominates among
social networking platforms.
In the latest numbers from Pew, 71 percent of online adults are now
Facebook users--that's an increase from the 67 percent of online adults who
used Facebook in the last presidential cycle. But while Facebook remains on
top, other social networking sites have notably increased their share of
the market over the past year.
Pinterest, which is four times more popular among women than among
men, is used by 21 percent of online adults. That's compared to just 15
percent who used Pinterest in 2012. Pinterest also beats out Twitter, which
was used by just 18 percent of online adults in 2013--a slight increase
from 2012.
LinkedIn and Instagram also saw increases over the past year, and
both are more popular with younger Internet users. The greatest demographic
overlap, according to Pew's data, is between users of Twitter and
Instagram.
Facebook also leads the pack when it comes to engagement, followed
closely by Instagram. The Pew numbers show that a majority of Facebook and
Instagram users sign into their accounts at least once a day. A full 63
percent of Facebook users visit daily; 40 percent are on the site more than
once a day.
The trends are similar among users of Twitter and Instagram. A full
57 percent of Instagram users are on the site at least once daily--35
percent of them more than once a day. Among Twitter users, it's 46 percent
who visit daily--29 percent of users are on the site multiple times
throughout the day.
According to performancing.com, the popularity of the social
networking sites increased rapidly in the last decade. This is probably due
to the reason that college and university students as well as teens used it
extensively to get global access. These social networking sites such as
Twitter and Facebook have become a raging craze for everyone nowadays.
The negative effects of these social networking sites over weigh the
positive ones. These sites have caused some potential harm to society. The
students become victims of social networks more often than anyone else.
This is because of the reason that when they are studying or searching
their course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill the
boredom in their study time, diverting their attention from their work.
Other negative side effects of social networking websites include the
following:
Reduced learning and research capabilities - Students have started
relying more on the information accessible easily on these social
networking sites and the web. This reduces their learning and research
capabilities.
Reduces command over language use age and creative writing skills -
Students mostly use slang words or shortened forms of words on social
networking sites. They start relying on the computer grammar and spelling
check features. This reduces their command over the language and their
creative writing skills.
Time wastage- Students, while searching and studying online, get
attracted to using social media sites and sometimes they forget why they
are using internet. This wastes their time and sometimes students are not
able to deliver their work in the specified time frame.
Low grades - Students get low grades in school due to lack of the
desired information and writing skills.
Loss of motivation in students- The student's motivational level
reduces due to the use of these social networking sites. They rely on the
virtual environment instead of gaining practical knowledge from the real
world.
Conceptual Framework
According to Kabani (2011), there are three main reasons why
people join different social networking sites. The first on the list only
signifies that people wants to showcase who they are because social network
says something about their users. The second and third are common reasons
why people joins these sites. Connections are as easy as one, two, and
three when you're in a social networking site and in this way you can build
or join a community wherein you can feel that people cares for you or even
know you for some things you try to show them through the site.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research Design
The researchers conducted a study that required the participants past
and present academic performances. For this study the researchers used the
qualitative design because the researchers analyzed the quality of the
participant's academic performance after using social networking sites. The
researchers also looked for the opinions of the study. The study is also
descriptive design because the study wants to find out what are the
negative effects that the respondents experienced after using social
networking sites.
Subject/ Settings of the Study
The respondents who answered the questionnaires for the study were
college students of Technological Institute of the Philippines. The
researchers distributed and conducted the survey questionnaires around
Technological Institute of the Philippines facilities wherein 10 random
freshmen college students answered the survey.
Data Gathering Procedure
The first step is to mke an introduction about the study to be made and
to cite the significance about it and to formulate the problems to be
answered throughout the study. All of that is included in the Chapter 1.
The next step is to gathered information about it from the related
literatures close to it. The next step is to gathered the results that will
came from the questionnaires that we handed out to the selected students of
Technological Institute of the Philippines. From the questionnaires we
gathered all the results and with it, we concluded our study.
Research Instrumentation
To be able to gathered all the data and information needed for this
study, the researchers used the following:
1. Journals/ Magazines
2. Internet
3. Questionnaires
By using and giving questionnaires is the way the researchers
conducted the study. The questionnaire is composed of logically ordered
questions that are carefully prepared. It consists of the respondent's
profile in terms of age, gender and civil status. It also consists of their
academic performances. The researchers used survey because it is self-
administered by the respondents meaning they read the questions and check
their chosen answer on the space provided.
Statistical Treatment
The method that the researchers use in gathering, analyzing and
interpreting the gathered results is the percentile method. The formula
used for finding the percentage is:
Percentage= F
n
Where: F= frequency
n= total number of respondents
The researchers used the following formula to find out the rate of the
answers of the respondents in the given questionnaires. The answer in the
formula will be compared to each other and there we concluded the data.
