Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study Internet has both positive and negative effect for the students. The technology via internet has brought new information and knowledge to the students faster than the traditional research in the library. Everything is available via the World Wide Web and because of the availability there is no restraint on websites that are not suitable for the students such as pornography, gun assembly, and violent video games. Without proper guidance, the students will not be able to delineate which websites are good for them and which are harmful. Internet has great effect on Second Year College of Education students of Pangasinan State University - Infanta Campus, especially on their studies even though there is class discussion in other subject they are using internet like Facebook. This situation pushed us to determine the negative and positive effect of using internet that can affect their studies.
Statement of the Problem The study aimed to get the positive and negative effect of using Internet in their studies. Specifically the problem sought will answer the following:
1. To determine the positive effect of using internet in their studies. 2. To determine the negative effect of using internet in their studies. Objectives of Study A study of different disciplines was conducted to identify the intensity of internet usage by student who belongs to different disciples. The purpose of our studies is to evaluate weather is there any relationship between the usage of internet and students academics performance. To better understand the relationship how the Internet affects university students learning, the following questions should be answered. What are the benefits of using the Internet as part of a university education? What are the main factors affecting such use? What is the impact of such use on student learning? What does it take to encourage positive attitudes in students toward Internet use? This study tries to answer these questions by exploring the antecedents to, and the impacts of, Internet use in university education. The specific objectives were to: • Identify attitude of students toward IT. • Determine the purpose of internet usage for students. • Find out the intensity of internet usage by students.
Significance of the Study The internet is one of the greatest recent advancement in the world of information technology and has become a useful instrument that has fostered the process of making the world a global village. This is a universal fact that the use of internet has a great impact on the student's academic achievement and social life. The study was conducted to determine the positive and negative effect of use of internet. The study will be helpful for the university students, researchers and curriculum developers in order to find out the correlation of use of internet and academic performance. The study is significant for the university teachers to analyse the effect of use of internet on academic performance of students. The study will be supportive to explore the correlation of use of internet and social life of university students.
Chapter 2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE
This chapter presents a summary of some related studies and literature that provide some background knowledge and insight necessary for the development of the study. The Internet is a relatively new channel for scholarly resources, and contains vast quantities of information that vary a great deal regarding its contents, aim, target group reliability etc. Hence, it is important that end-user is aware of the diverse information and available on the internet and educated and the criteria by which the information content should be assessed (Chapman 2002). The fabulous growth in the telecommunication has brought on online services, specialized electronic networks, web pages, e-mail, software and global information resources power homes as well as to education. The internet provides and environment which millions of people participate and engage and the creation and exchange information. (Rose and Fernlund 1997)
.
Students have only recently received the opportunity to use the internet to seek and obtain scholarly material and, consequently, knowledge on how effectively they make use of this channel is limited. Students information seeking culminates as they work on their thesis. Many studies have been conducted regarding the type of information the end-users seek and obtain on the internet and in which
circumstances they prefer electronic sources to paper sources (Tenopir et al. 2003). Internet use has become very popular in many areas as well as in education in recent years accordingly; internet access in schools has increased greatly over the last 20 years (Berson 2000).
Chapter 3 METHODOLOGY This chapter discusses the procedures and methods that will be used in this research. It also includes the research design of the project and how the data will be gathered, as well as, the research instruments.
Dependent Variable
Effect of using internet a. Positive effect b. Negative effect
Independent Variable
a. 1. Faster information 2. Source of Information 3. Communication b. 1. Thinking Capacity reduced 2. Addiction on Social Media 3. Waste of time 4. Waste of money
Methods of Collecting Data We will use quantitative method in gathering data. First, we will observe and gather problem. Second, we will gather problem so that we create a little of our study. Third is to determine the positive and negative effects that served as our objectives. Then relate our problem to the review of literature and get information in different authors.
Lastly we will conduct interview using questionnaire to get the positive and negative effects of internet on their studies. Methods of Data Analysis Correlation will be used to analyze the relationship between the result of their performance with the use of Internet and without the use of Internet in their studies.
