Is playing video games good or bad for you? It can be both. Video games may actually teach you high-level thinking skills that you will need in the future. Though some people sees video games as time-wasters and more likely to corrupt your brain, and it’s not completely wrong. It’s true that some studies have shown some certain video games can actually have many benefits – the main one is making kids smart. Contrary to conventional beliefs that playing video games is intellectually harmful, playing video games actually promotes a wide range of cognitive skills. Good hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and the mind’s ability to process information are the cognitive benefit you could get by playing video games. Gaming environments surprisingly have the ability to cultivate an optimistic motivational style within the players. It forces people all ages into visual environments, ask them to work toward meaningful goals, encounter multiple failures and celebrate the victory after successfully completing the challenging tasks. Unlike the stereotypes floating around public, the gamer is not a socially isolated nerd who spends all of his (or her) times alone loafing on the couch. Gamers mostly play their games with a friend, either cooperatively or competitively. The gamers may learn social skills when they were playing games, and it might generalize to their peer and family relationship. As I stated in the beginning, too much of something is just too much. Too much of game playing may lead to health problems. If you spend all your free time playing video games and skip meals or lose sleep because of excessive game play, it may negatively affect your medical issues, such as backaches, headaches, pain that you may feel in your wrist, shoulders, etc. Your relationship with others may suffer if you spend more time gaming than you are hanging out with the loved one. Children also likely to act more aggressive if they often play violent games. It’s hard to get active play and exercise – you barely move your thumbs even – if you’re always inside playing games. And without exercise, people can become overweight. Despite their status as a multi-billion dollar industry and their growing popularity, video games are still seen as a domain for children and the immature to enjoy overly violent content. Though misconceptions about video games seems harmless, some cases are actually brought up to court and still being debated – for
example, the selling of violent video games to minors. Now video games is not only enjoyed by kids or teenagers, a statistic even stated that average age of game player in U.S. is 34. A common complaint I hear about video games is that they are too violent. Talk to anyone between the ages of 30 and 50 about video games, and most of them will start complaining about how game causes people to rape and kill others. The concept of video games is indeed controversial, as the line between a healthy amount of gaming and excessive amount of gaming is easily blurred and crossed. If you do gaming in appropriate amount, you may get the benefit I told above. However, the best advice for understanding video games is to ignore stereotypical views and just play one for yourself.
