Whatt nat Wha native ive speaker speake r mea means ns … December 2, 2009
What native speaker means … By Herri Mulyono A morning Jakarta newspaper couple days ago reported that an American Taxi driver had been invited to be a native English teacher in a well established English course. It might be funny thing or even weird that people nowadays have been misled by words of “Native Speaker”, that in some occasions, many English courses use this “Native Speaker” purposefully to raise their status, credibility, and of course promote their institution rather to provide a good model of English. In this kind of situation, I prefer to call it as an abuse of what is meant by “Native

English for such intention. Native speaker is limitedly used to recall a person who is born or a local inhabitant where English is used as daily d aily mean of communication or as first language. However, we come across to two critical questions: “Whom are we going to use as model?” and, “Do those Englishmen have good English?” If you are convinced that all Englishmen have good English, why then Daniel Jones, father of English pronunciation, reported that Cockney fashion of English is difficult to understand for other Englishmen while other Sco tsman or American considers it as “bad.” English now is international language that people who speak it come from many countries with different dialect, accent, and social background back ground as well. When the use of English is seen from communication perspective, then, it emphasizes to the transference of ideas, thoughts or information, whether the receiver understands of what is b eing talked by the speaker or not. In this circumstance, if the speaker is able to send the information using English and that information is appropriately understood by the receiver, in that case there is no doubt that English spoken by the speaker is absolutely good and do otherwise. Daniel Jones introduces the term “accepted pronunciation” or some of us are informed by what is called as “receptive pronunciation” or RP. However, he refuses if then RP is thought to be absolute uniform of English due to number variations of English is widely spoken. In the discussion of good speech and bad speech, Jones points two things affecting on good speech: intelligible and pleasing. What is meant by intelligible is that if on e’s English is clearly understood by his communication partner, then his English is considered good. In addition, our dialect and accent in uttering English have also to be pleasing the listener, that the listener does not think it as an odd accent or later he may feel insulted. From these two points, I put the meaning of Native speaker will be rather than define it as “a person who is born or a local inhabitant where English is used as daily mean of communication or as first language.” When you use my argument on what native speaker likely is, you have to convince yourself that native speaker would be strongly possible for those whose English utterance is clearly intelligible and pleasing. Regarding to the above conditions, all English teachers from Sumatra, Java, Jakarta, Kalimantan and all places in Indonesia could be native speaker of English by then you’re not so bothered in finding good model of English for your students. Even you could be so. When your students don’t feel burdened to understand your spoken English and they are likely to love it, at that moment I will say you have put yourself as a good English model for your students and you have complete your job outstandingly. Wish you all to be Good Native English Speaker for your students … For more discussion, please find my nick at Facebook: Myenglish Uhamka Posted in Free Article, Article, Reading Reading,, Speaking Speaking,, Teaching Approach and Methodology | Tagged english native native native english native speaker | 2 Comments »

Academic Speaking: Beyond the Language By: Herri Mulyono Academic speaking in many aspects a spects is mostly similar to public speaking where a speaker is supposed to communicate his ideas effectively and understandably. Speaker’s language competence for many situations is viewed as the most factor affecting to the success of delivering any information effectively that audience can receive and understand every point meaningfully. However, there are conditions where audience either cannot enjoy speaker’s talk or even feel disregard the information which is being delivered although the language is performed in appropriate manner. These conditions figure out that there are other elements beyond the language which also contribute to the effective and understandable academic speaking: eye contact and body language. These two elements not only make our public speaking effective and understandable but also make it even better. Eye contact
It is obvious already that eyes are often o ften used to communicate particular ideas or information which cannot be brought out by a verbal language. As non verbal language, eye contact is often devised to arise audience’s emotional feeling on ideas which is being delivered. Even in some situations, speakers might use eye contact to bu ild intimacy with their audience for the closerelation between speaker and the audience would be the profound alterative to maintain audience’s attention and understanding. Having eye contact with audience does not only benefit the speaker in relation with their audience’s attention and understanding but a lso advantage the speaker himself. It is because when eye contact has been well maintained, speaker could gradually grow his self esteem. Establishing eye contact might be the first task that speaker must cover up before delivering d elivering their speech to the audience. If the speaker succeed to engage his eye contact with the audience’s, then delivering their speech to the audience could be much easier. The 3 second method could be carried out for the speaker to maintain eye contact with his audience. The 3 second method means that after arriving at the stage, speaker might directly comes into the eyes of the audience for abut 3 seconds at time. This first eye contact is intended to lead to the involvement of audience into the following speech. Body language
Body language speaks about abou t more than half of overall presentation. This means that neglecting

Gestures need to arise from the content of talk and fit both the circumstance and speaker’s own personal style. Hands that most speaker uses as of effective gesture, do not belong to his hips or in his pockets, or held behind his back. Hands are used to help speaker emphasize particular important point, express emotion or release tension towards ideas that presentation might covey, that all actions are to arrive at the engagement between the speaker and the audience. In addition, movements of eyes, mouth and other facial expression have to be directed to make a connection between speaker and the audience. They are also to convey the speake r’s feeling for the subject, reveal the depth of his concern to the audience, and build any other emotional interaction in the triangle lane, the speaker-the presentation-and the audience. To sum, performing eye contact and body language might result on successful presentation or other speech for the eye contact and body language are able to establish audience’s attention and connection towards the presentation. Instead, the two elements of eye contact and body language could be brought out separately while both are part of integration in a speech. This means that eye contact and body language have to come at the same moment in a presentation to make it effective, efficient, and successful.
