Activities with Natural Flow
Welcome to the LEGO® Education way to teach Activity Packs from LEGO® Education are developed by experienced educators and have a natural flow that engages and motivates students. We call it the 4C approach: Connect, Construct, Contemplate and Continue.
1 CONNECT It is important to capture students’ interest in order to have a positive and motivating learning environment. LEGO® Education always begins with an engaging challenge introduced through real-life video clips, photos, stories or animations that students can relate to and find compelling.
4 CONTINUE Extension ideas that present a new challenge within the same theme are provided. Students are encouraged to change or add features to their models, thereby leading them to a new Connect phase. This allows them to enter a positive learning spiral, in which they take on increasingly difficult challenges.
2 CONSTRUCT 3 CONTEMPLATE
Students work in teams to solve an open-ended building task related to the challenge. They make their own solutions, then plan, build and test their models or software programmes.
Students think about what they have just constructed and achieved. They discuss the project at hand, reflect on and adapt their ideas, and teachers can encourage this process by asking questions.

When Sam and Sally visit the fair they always buy popcorn. Sometimes it can be difficult to see where popcorn is being sold. Sam and Sally want to help the popcorn seller by building a sign for the popcorn cart that will turn and attract people’s attention.
• Circle what is different.

A4
Let’s help Sam and Sally! Build a popcorn cart like the one in the picture.
• What do you notice? Explain how the models are different.
Your design brief is as follows: • Build a popcorn cart. • Make a sign that can turn. • Build a mechanism that makes the sign turn when you turn a handle.

A5
When you have finished, test your cart. Count how many times the sign spins for every five turns of the handle. Assess how easily the sign can be read at a distance. What makes it easy or difficult to read? 27

Innovation Lab by LEGO® Education in Science Centre Singapore, is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The Innovation Lab provides a unique ‘hands-on, minds-on’ environment that supports and enriches the entire learning process. It’s an innovative way of both learning and teaching – one that will stimulate your students, motivate your teachers and enhance the wider academic reputation of your school. Research has shown that when we allow children to use multiple senses during the learning process, they have better chances of fully understanding and remembering what they have learned. We believe that more playful, creative and hands-on methods engage students of all abilities to achieve results. While this lends itself to the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) – a more progressive approach can be successfully applied to all curriculum subjects, including literacy. Tomorrow’s scientists and engineers are sitting in our classrooms today. Let’s build something that will transform these classrooms into places for creative and successful learning, as well as encourage and inspire students by bringing the subjects to life.
