1. An Introduction W h a t is h y p n o sis? W h a t is t h e d if fe re n c e b e t w e e n n a t u ra l h y p n o sis a n d in t e n d e d h y p n o sis?
Hypnosis is the c ommunication between two levels of mind; Consc ious and Sub-Consc ious. The Consc ious is the questioning, Ana lytic al, intellec tual part of the mind. The Sub-C onsc ious is The emotional and autonomic part.
There are 2 types of hypnosis/c ommunic ation; Natural Hypnosis and Intended Hypnosis. 1. Natural Hypnosis •
Natural hypnosis is natural c ommunic ation – it happens all the time you a re awake.
•
You are usually not awa re of the co mmunication.
•
The quality of natural hypnosis will vary.
•
•
2. •
Everyone experiences natural, hypnotic trance states, many times a day. The best c ommunication and hypnosis is when we are relaxed and the consc ious mind is less ac tive, da ydrea ming for example. There is also a powerful communic ation be tween the two levels of mind when we experienc e intense emotion.
Intended Hypnosis Intended Hypnosis is natural hypnosis with awarene ss.
4
•
Intended Hypnosis is the best quality communic ation, with awareness, c ontrol, safety, intention a nd d epth.
•
Hypnosis is natural.
•
Hypnosis is an experience c ommon to a ll human b eings.
•
The only time we are definitely not in hypnosis iswhen we are in undisturbed, natural, nondreaming sleep.
•
Hypnosis is the communica tion b etween two levels of mind, which oc cursanytime that we are awake (or in dreaming sleep).
•
Intended hypnosisis entering this sta te with intention, awa reness and control.
•
Intended hypnosis is foc used.
•
Intended hypnosis diminishes the conscious, ana lytical, intellec tual pa rt of the mind in order to improve c ommunica tion with the unc onscious, emo tiona l part of the mind.
•
Intended hypnosis utilises that pa rt of the mind responsible for all change.
•
Intended hypnosis works when your sub-conscious mind is totally convinced (rather than your conscious mind), and so works when willpower and determination cannot.
•
Intended hypnosis is the use of your mind and imagination to achieve a desired change within yourself.
•
Remember – the sub-c onscious mind does not know the d ifferenc e between imagination and reality.
Hypnotic Communication between waking and sleeping states.

• • • • • •
Write down what it is that you want, not what you don’t want. What is the outc ome you most desire? How would you like to feel? How would you like to be? What will the benefits be? Dea l, if possible, with the c ause and effec t.
Make a map diagram with your c hosen goa l in a c irc le. Then, branching out from the c irc le, list all the important points assoc iated with your goal. Sights, sounds, smells and other senses may play a part. The objec t of the exerc ise is to c over every aspec t and desc ribe every detail. It is a great way of committing your thoughts to paper.
Empty your thoughts onto paper
10
What words make you feel good? Whic h words give you good feelings? Make a list of the words that app eal to you. You c an use a thesaurus to help. Ask yourself; h o w w o u l d I like to fee l?
Remember; suggestions work best when you have intense emotion combined with relaxation. Here are some good words you may like to use in your suggestions: Healthy
Peac e
Balance
Harmony
Relaxed
Confident
G ood
Happy
Powerful
J oyful
Calm
Unison
Assured
Vibrant
Loving
Progressive
Better
Beautiful
When writing your suggestion, avoid the following words;• • • •
Words that elic it ba d feelings. Words that are ambiguous Words that a re limiting, restrictive o r disempower you. Words that you are unc omfortable with.
When you have prepared your sc ript, ask yourself the following que stions: • • •
Is there another phrase or word that is be tter? Is there a word or phrase I find mo re plea sing? Is there a way in whic h you can put your energy and po wer into this suggestion in a better wa y?
Words that elicit bad feelings Try C an’t Don’ t Want Won’ t Should Shouldn’t Must Mustn’t Ough t to

11
De sire Normal Positive
Write it down and read it through several times. •
•
Once you have written out the suggestion, put on your editing hat. Have any words entered without your intention? Are you happ y with the finished result? Remember that during this early period as a self-hypno tist, one suggestion per zap can be more successful than giving many.
Generally, the best zaps are SIMPLE. •
•
Be spec ific , co ncise a nd prec ise. It is be st to be spec ific about the outc ome a nd vague about how exac tly how you will ac hieve it. Other than sugge stions for c omfort and safety, it is be tter to leave it to your sub-conscious.
Want it to work and expect it to work. •
The more you want it to work, the more effec tive your suggestion will be. If in doubt, write down the pros and cons. Do you really want what you have asked for?
Think it through. •
Do not proc eed if there is any doub t abo ut your suggestion. When in doubt, think about your suggestion. Do what you can to remove the ambiguity and only then proceed.
Ask for what you want, not what you do not want. •
State your goals in the positive. Your subc onsc ious responds accurately when given specific instruc tions.
Use emotive language •
Use g r e a t , f a n t a st ic , b e t t e r a n d b e t t e r.
Say exactly what you mean and mean what you say •
Use clear language, free from ambiguity.
Be sure to ask for exactly what you want •
•
Bec ause you are likely to get exac tly what you a sked for! Your subconscious is literal, you are likely to get what you asked for, whether you want it or not!
12
Set a time to start and finish •
Suggestions should have a time to start and in some cases, a time to finish.
Label/title your suggestions •
This makes altering, boosting or removing them easier.
Suggestions for pain control •
•
•
Suggestions for the removal of pa in and discomfort should be used as H y p n o t i c Ta b lets that are effec tive for 1-2 hours. This is especially impo rtant when you c annot identify the c ause of pa in. It ensures that you do not ignore the body’s alarm system. When you are rec overing from surgery or injury, ensure tha t you maintain awarene ss. Your suggestion should finish at the same time as the healing proc ess completes.
Remember your ac hievements using hypnosis •
Success bree ds success.
Visualisation •
Your unconsc ious responds well to images and symbols, as long as you are c lear about their meaning.
Continue to protect yourself from random thought, sound and image having hypnotic influence. Use your self-hypnosis to make writing suggestions easier and more enjoyable.
Suggestions work better when they are written in Lo o p s. Looping is a wa y to make your suggestion stronger through the use of a virtuous circle. For example,
13
•
Write your programme in a loop (including your sugg estions #1, #2, #3 etc.)
•
Include the following into every suggestion you write: Better Quality Sleep Better Quality Hypnosis
•
This will promote, endorse and enco urage be tter quality sleep and better quality hypnosis with every loop of every suggestion you write.

On entering hypno sis, give c ontrol and full hypnotic authority to your voice o n the tape. Lie back and enjoy the ride!
Music can be a very po werful aid to your hypnosis; do remember these two important rules when using music: • •
Only use an instrumental piece – sung o r spoken words may have hypnotic influence. Do not use an instrumental piec e that has memorable words. For example, the instrumental version of I ’ m n o t i n l o v e by 10cc may have a detrimental effec t on your marriage!
At first, use all 3 methods of entering suggestions and see which works best for you. When you c hoose your favourite, you c an use zap to make sure that all the other methods work just as effec tively. Above a ll, enjoy your time in self-hypnosis and sell your suggestions.
