a wardrobe, a small table for my books and magazines, a desk with my computer on it and some bookshelves. Presenter That’s amazing. What about the kitchen? Edward
Well, the kitchen is quite small, but we’ve got everything we need. There’s an oven, a fridge and a microwave and a sink, of course. There are lots of cupboards for keeping things in. But there isn’t room to eat in the kitchen, so we eat in the living room.
Presenter
And what’s the living room like?
Edward
The living room is really cosy. There’s a big sofa and two armchairs. They’re really soft and comfortable. We’ve got a television, a DVD player and a stereo. It’s my favourite room.
Presenter
So what’s the best thing about living on a barge?
Edward
Well, I love having an unusual home. It’s more interesting than living in a house! But I think my favourite thing is the water. I like watching the canal. I can see ducks and swans swim by. I see other barges go past, too. It’s amazing!

Really? Why? Well, I went to the airport on Friday, but I didn’t fly until Monday. Monday? Why not? Did you forget your passport? No, I didn’t. The flight didn’t leave on Friday because there was a problem with the weather. Really? I didn’t know that. Yeah, there was snow and ice in London so it was impossible for the planes to leave the airport. Did you go to a hotel?
David
No, I didn’t. I stayed in the airport all weekend.
Olivia

David
No, I didn’t. There weren’t any beds! I was lucky because I had a chair.

Hello and welcome again to ‘Chit Chat’. On today’s programme we’re talking about bad days. Dan, Holly and Will all had bad days last week. Dan, what happened to you?
Dan
I had a really bad day on Monday. My mobile phone usually wakes me up. But I didn’t hear it last Monday so I woke up late and I didn’t have time for breakfast.
Presenter Oh no. What happened next? Dan I ran out of the house and cycled to school. Then it started raining and I got really wet and cold. Presenter
And were you late for school?
Dan
Yes. I was 15 minutes late for my first lesson and my teacher was really angry.
Presenter
Oh dear. That sounds like a bad day. What went wrong for you last week, Holly?
Holly
Lots of things. I had a terrible week.
Presenter
Really? What happened?
Holly
I was sick for three days – Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I had a cold and a temperature. I also had a terrible headache so I didn’t go to school. I was really bored at home.
Presenter
But did your week get better after that?
Holly
No! On Thursday I went to school and there was a science test. I didn’t know the answers to any of the questions.
Presenter That’s awful. Holly
And on Friday, I left my mobile phone on the bus. I went to the bus station, but they didn’t have it. I was really sad. It was a present from my mum.

Ruby
I’m planning a trip at the moment.
Oscar
Really?
Ruby
Yes. I’m going to go camping with my cousins next month and we want to know about good campsites. You go camping a lot. Maybe you can give me some advice.
Oscar
OK. I went camping three times last year. In June I went camping in Scotland. The campsite was called Sunshine Shores.
Ruby
And did you get a lot of sunshine?
Oscar
No. The weather was terrible!
Ruby
Oh dear!
Oscar
But it was a good holiday. There were lots of facilities on the site. There was a sports centre with a swimming pool. I played tennis and basketball there.
Ruby
That sounds fun.
Oscar Ruby
Yes. There was a restaurant there too. But we didn’t use it because we cooked our own food. Hmm... It’s a long way to Scotland, though. Too far for me, I think ...
Oscar
OK. My brother Pete and I went camping in Dorset in July.
Ruby
What was that like?
Oscar
Amazing! We were there for two weeks and we had perfect weather every day. We went surfing a lot.
Ruby
What did you do in the evenings?
Oscar
We cooked our dinner. Pete played his guitar and we all sang.
Ruby
Great! What was the name of the campsite?
Oscar
Erm… the campsite was called Bailey Farm.
Ruby
Great. Now what about the third place you went to?
Oscar
That was in August. We went to a place in Devon. The campsite was called Meadow View. It was beautiful. There was a river there and we saw lots of beautiful birds.
Ruby Oscar
What facilities did the campsite have? Toilets and showers, that was all! It was a very quiet place. But we took our bikes with us and we cycled to a little beach every day.
Ruby
Which campsite did you like best?
Oscar
They were all good, but I think my favourite was the campsite in Devon. It was so relaxing.

Interviewer Hello, and welcome to this week’s episode of Students in Science, with our special guest, Emily Walker. Hello, Emily. What are you going to tell us about today? Emily
Hello. Well, I’m going to tell you about an elephant care-centre in Thailand. They’re looking for volunteers to work in the centre. Volunteers pay to work in the centre for between one and three
weeks. And this money pays for the cost of looking after the animals. Interviewer That sounds amazing! What do volunteers do at the centre? Emily
They help look after the elephants. Every morning they walk to the forest, collect the elephants and walk back to the centre with them. At the centre, they feed them, and help wash them in the river. Then they clean the elephants’ shelters and in the afternoon they take them back to the forest.
Interviewer What do the elephants eat? Emily
Fruit … and lots of it! The volunteers go to local farms and collect pineapples and bananas for the elephants twice a week.
Interviewer And where is the elephant care-centre? Emily
It’s in Tha Yang, in south Thailand. It’s about 100 miles from Bangkok and about 15 miles from the beach. It’s a very beautiful place.
Interviewer Well, thanks for telling us about the centre Emily. It sounds like a wonderful place.
