Starting from 1st Principles

Start as normal with a new file, and set the dimensions to millimetres, stress to MPa, a nd aforce to KN. • • • •

Create Nodes Beam Sections Create Plates Create Beam Sections

Create Nodes Start with Ctrl + W on the keyboard to launch the Create Node menu. We wil draw an 'L' shaped bracket as that below using nodes.

The node locations for this bracket, 300mm x 300mm x 10mm thick are as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

0,0 300 , 0 300 , 300 290 , 300 290 , 10 0, 10

You will have worked out that the node reference works on the horizontal , vertical reference. The next stage is to join the dots, using beam sections. Back to the Top

Beam Sections Launch the Connections menu using Ctrl + E. simply join the nodes by clicking on one node to start then the node you want to connect it to, i.e. 1 - 2, 2 - 3, etc. as in the picture below.

Once the nodes are all connected, we need to create plate elements of no thickness that can be extrduded down the length of the beam will apply this section to. Back to the Top

Create Plates In the connections menu - the floating menu we used to create beams - select Quad8 plates from the menu, instead of Beams, as below.

Now we simply join the nodes, again, but this time creating plate elements.

Once the last node has been selected, click the All button to fill in the plate. Repeat for the other leg of the section. The finished scetion looks like;

Those using the demo copy of Strand7 have to stop here, before we create a Beam Section, but it's only a few clicks. Back to the Top

Create Beam Section File > Make Beam Section I said it was easy! You will be prompted to save the file, if you haven't done so allready ( the save facility is disabled in the demo copy so it throws you out at this stage ). After a few seconds you will be presented with the following screen.

Simply save the beam section, and it can then be applied as in the tutorials on Beam Analysis. Back to the top The end
