Introduction Modern radio networks are becoming more and more and complicated thus need of proper tools and services is increasing. This has created the need from Operator side to proper services for meeting the troubleshooting and maintaining current complex Radio Network systems. Mobile network equipment vendors have also understood that just delivery of the network is not anymore enough but also delivery of proper maintenance and tracing capabilities is required. Today testing, tracing and troubleshooting of Radio Networks contain a lot of meticulous work and not much automation is used for running the tests and interpreting the test results. In order to be able to investigate and troubleshoot network elements thoroughly and efficiently, amount of the data required is huge and needs to be constantly done. For this purpose advanced and highly configurable tool has been developed to overcome this challenge. Due to huge amount of data collected and needed to be investigated, need for advanced tool to interpret collected logs obviously has arisen. Those above mentioned challenges have been solved with highly configurable Message Collection Platform and Message Analysis Platform solutions. This document focuses on L3 Data Collector (MegaPlexer). In all of the examples in this document technology and network element referred are LTE and eNodeB.

L3 Data Collector (MegaPlexer) In the reminder of the document, L3 Data Collector (MegaPlexer) is referred only as MegaPlexer. MegaPlexer is a tool developed to overcome a challenge for recording the needed logs for different purposes. Typically troubleshooting requires very detailed information about the occurred events during a failure. Challenge always is that when failure (or event requiring thorough investigation) occurs, logs related to that event would have already been needed to capture. MegaPlexer has been developed so that it records continuously all needed events and stores or forwards those for further processing. Additionally MegaPlexer is a solution which can collect message streams from several eNodeB’s simultaneously and further send it defined IP-address. MegaPlexer can serve multiple applications on different IP-addresses in parallel

Functionality MegaPlexer functionality includes: •

Configurable message storage parameters including parameters for Message storing time window o o Storage size: # of files & size Storage free space supervision o Security between MegaPlexer and connecting applications/solutions (Usename/Password, SharedKey authentication) Alarm forwarding to NetAct using RPC protocol License handling
MegaPlexer requires valid license to function. License can be tied into a several different parameters: • • •
Release: MegaPlexer works only with the release defined in the license End Date: MegaPlexer works until the defined date CPU-Hash: MegaPlexer works only in the workstation which has the CPUhash defined in the license.
Above mentioned parameters are restricting the functioning of the MegaPlexer. Additionally there can be some other informational parameters defined in the license. License is delivered through normal NSN license delivery channel (CliCS) against valid order. L3 Data Collector (MegaPlexer)

MegaPlexer Architecture Overall architecture of the solution is described in the following picture.

MegaPlexer Core MegaPlexer GUI (Mega GUI)
Both applications are running separately. MegaPlexer Core will run independently with the parameters defined in the initialisation files. MegaPlexer Core will receive Cell Trace information send by eNodeB’s. MegaPlexer address has to be configured into eNodeB’s as a destination for Cell Trace data information destination. MegaPlexer GUI is a separate application which can be run on the same server HW where MegaPlexer Core is located, or in a different server HW having a working Ethernet connection to MegaPlexer Core server HW.

Control Interface Through Control Interface, all functions of the MegaPlexer can be controlled. With the solution, separate MegaPlexer GUI application (Mega GUI) for the purpose is delivered

In Interface In Interface is the interface through which all connections are established. In MegaPlexer it can be defined which IP-address & port MegaPlexer is listening for incoming connections.Alternatively it can be set that MegaPlexer listens all addresses.

Out Interface Out Interface is internal interface through which MegaPlexer sends the information out for further processing. On the Out Interface there typically is tailored solution which processes the received data for the final solution. Applications and solutions on the Out Interface are connecting MegaPlexer to receive data.

Server There exists a recommended HW configuration for MegaPlexer in NSN ordering tools. If HW option is selected when making the order, a delivery of NSN recommended HW will take place. This HW has been designed to fulfil all known requirements when using MegaPlexer. Processing power of the server has been performance tested in NSN Performance Testing laboratory with maximum capacity it can handle. Configuration in ordering tools is continuously maintained and updated when necessary to reflect needed changes in performance. With the HW, it is possible to select also storage option for HW. This storage has been designed to fulfil very high storing speeds that are required. With high traffic LTE network, message flow towards MegaPlexer can easily be very high requiring fast hard drive configuration (RAID-0). Software MegaPlexer SW is highly configurable for different purposes. MegaPlexer includes also highly configurable data storing options. Data can be stored on different intervals, data storage space supervision can be set etc... Full description of different parameters and settings is available in the MegaPlexer Installation Instruction file. Data collection can easily consist on several Gigabytes of data in just matter of minutes depending on the occurred traffic in the network elements. Due to this reason, typically the storage space needed is some Terabytes. Additional requirement for the storage space is the storing speed of the data. Normal (USB) hard drives cannot typically store data in higher speeds than 100 Mbit/s. In a very high loaded LTE networks, message flows can easily peak up to that limit. HW defined and orderable though NSN ordering systems can fulfill all the needs for storage space and storing speed.

Platform MegaPlexer application has been developed to run on Windows environment. When ordering recommended HW through NSN ordering systems, the server delivered will come with pre-installed Windows 2008 Server Standard edition (64bit).
5.2
Upgrade and Maintenance MegaPlexer SW releases and maintenance packages are independently released and not tied to any network element maintenance schedules. For the maintenance, fast track approach is used which means that there is no pre-defined maintenance package schedule for MegaPlexer.

Supervision and Reliability For the reliability point of view there is no redundancy implemented for the application SW. Recommended HW is industry standard HP server which includes power supply redundancy.

Operating environment If MegaPlexer is running on recommended HW configuration, operating environment requirements of HP server can be found from documentation provided by HP. Typically however server is installed into a dedicated server or switch room where operating environment requirements are fulfilled.

Server HW and SW Recommended HP server can be ordered with different disk storage capacity to meet the needs for the required solution. Server basic configuration is adequate for the solutions where data storage to local hard drives is not need but instead all data is processed and forwarded to another destination for final processing and storage.
