Main differences between Nokia AirScale and Flexi Multiradio 10 System Modules Describes the main differences between AirScale SM and FSMF. Nokia AirScale System Module provides the following advantages compared to FSMF (Flexi Multiradio 10 System Module): • • • • • • • •
Increased capacity Support for 9.8 Gbps CPRI Support for CPRI IQ data compression with three RF interfaces per ABIA unit Highly improved RF connectivity Enhanced Backhaul connectivity Ten ethernet interfaces with two ASIA units Better LTE-Advanced support through increased interconnectivity Better support for IP/Ethernet based SRAN applications –
Subrack or casing sharing
–
Increased capacity Improved RF, SRIO and TRS connectivity
– • • •
Improved synchronization and holdover solution Improved power consumption against capacity proportion Forward compatibility through SEI external interface
Hardware differences Hardware prepared for Common unit resiliency future features. Power line, backhaul, synchronization, common and user plane capacity. AirScale SM does not support optional transport sub-modules and thus does not provide PDH interfaces, therefore AirScale SM does not support ATM, Dual Iub or IP based Iub over TDM (WCDMA) or Packet Abis over TDM (GSM) but only IP/Ethernet based transport modes. Optional integrated power distribution sub-modules are not compatible with AirScale SM.

Transport Configurations
10 Transport Configurations Description of Nokia AirScale Base Station transport configuration options. The Nokia AirScale BTS provides several transport interfaces on the common units. See Nokia AirScale System Module Interfaces for more details. The transport interfaces can be used for: Backhaul connectivity (tail sites) Aggregation (chain or tree sites) Redundancy (ring, link load sharing) Centralized RAN site solutions

Nokia AirScale Base Station supports such high capacities that a backhaul link with 1 Gbps is not sufficient in many cases. The total DL transport capacity is relevant for the connectivity, the sum of UL + DL is relevant for the IPsec performance. Based on the available interfaces, the ASIA can support the following basic transport configurations (more configurations will be available in future deliveries). Table 7

Nokia AirScale BTS Synchronization
12 Nokia AirScale BTS Synchronization Description of available synchronization options. To ensure proper operation of all Radio Access Technologies (RATs), accurate synchronization within a single AirScale BTS and between different AirScale BTSs is implemented. Control and Timing block in BTS is responsible for implementing these functions. The AirScale System Module has following synchronization sources: •
N O I S R E V T F A R D
• • • • • • •
Synchronous Ethernet recovered clock Timing-over-Packet (IEEE 1588v2) GNSS (e.g. GPS) GSM Frame Clock and Frame Number External synchronization clock according ITU G.703 2.048 MHz / 10 MHz FSM – FSM synchronization (between subracks) FSM – FSM synchronization (between FSM-r4 commons in one subrack) Fronthaul Interfaces on ABIA cards (RP3-01/CPRI)
Synchronization Requirements can be classified mainly into three different types: • • •
Frequency Synchronization Phase synchronization Time synchronization
Frequency synchronization Synchronization in the frequency domain, is usually referred to the frequency accuracy measured by comparing the actual frequency generated by the BTS at the air interface (carrier frequency) to a high stable reference clock, measured in units of ppb (part per billion) or ppm (part per million). 3GPP requires that the modulated carrier frequency of the BTS (all RATs) is to be accurate to within ±50ppb. Frequency synchronization can be provided through Synchronous Ethernet, ToP slave (IEEE1588v2), 2 MHz, GNSS (GPS, Glonass, etc.) Phase synchronization Synchronization at the phase domain, is usually referred to the frame alignment of the radio frame transmitted into air interface by different BTSs, that is aligned to each other with the required accuracy (in the unit of microseconds or even nanoseconds). Time Duplex technology, such as LTE TDD requires phase synchronization for its basic operation to align downlink and uplink transmission. Phase synchronization implicitly includes also frequency synchronization but not the other way around. Phase synchronization can be provided through ToP with phase sync or GNSS receiver. Time synchronization It is synchronization in the absolute time domain, which means that different network elements are aligned to the required Time of Day (ToD – in the unit of years, months, days, hours and so on). The requirements span from very mild requirements to the most stringent requirements depending on the applications. For example, time synchronization is required for O&M purposes such as alarm correlation, logs but the accuracy

requirement is in the range of milliseconds while System Frame Number (SFN) alignment on the radio interface requires a very strict accuracy requirement in the level of sub microsecond. In this chapter, only SFN alignment will be indicated as this is a unique requirement and special treatment is also required. SFN alignment requires phase synchronization.
12.1 Holdover Performance Description of holdover in cBTS.

AirScale System Module provides the following holdover requirements: • • •
Guaranteed holdover performance of 5 µs for 4 hours. Typical holdover performance of 1.5 µs for 8 hours. Typical holdover performance of 10 µs for 24 hours. Note: Conditions: BTS has been powered on and supply with accurate phase sync sources for period of no less than 7 days.
Synchronization Interfaces Nokia AirScale synchronization interfaces description. The synchronization interfaces on the AirScale System Module consist of one synchronization input (SYNC_IN) and one synchronization output (SYNC_OUT). The synchronization input is used to receive synchronization input such as 1PPS&ToD from GNSS receiver, 1PPS&ToD from a Sync Hub Master BTS or G.703 2.048 MHz signal. The synchronization output is used to provide 1PPS&ToD output and 2.048 MHz signal. Connectors used are HDMI-based.
