General description

General description The Nokia UltraSite AC/DC Connection Unit (ADUA and ADUB) is an integral part of Nokia UltraSite GSM EDGE Support which has been designed to be used with the Nokia UltraSite EDGE BST. The basic function of the ADUA/B is to distribute the AC mains to the rectifiers and then to distribute the DC output from the rectifiers to the intended loads. Should a mains failure occur, the ADUA/B ensures a battery supply for a determined period. Incorporated in the ADUA/B is a Controller Unit (CCUA) which interfaces to the Q1 bus to provide control and monitoring functions for the Nokia UltraSite GSM EDGE Support. The CCUA is located at the bottom of the ADUA/B and has a front panel present on the ADUA/B front panel. Figure 2 shows the front panel configuration of the ADUB and the CCUA.

The ADUA and ADUB contain the necessary facilities to provide a positive earthed 48 VDC power supply for use by internal and co-sited telecommunications equipment. The ADUA and ADUB function in an identical manner but in the former case, up to six rectifiers can be accommodated from the AC mains whereas in the latter case, twelve rectifiers can be handled. In addition, the ADUB provides AC to an auxiliary AC socket. The units receive a single phase or three phase AC supply which is connected to the lines L1, L2 and L3 and distributes this supply to rectifiers. Each line supplies two rectifiers, for example L1 feeds rectifiers 1 and 4. The AC supply is also fed to heaters as required.

Note The battery matt heaters are also supplied from Line 3. The DC supply produced by the rectifiers (nominally 54 VDC) is then distributed by the ADUA or ADUB to the connected loads (batteries, DC loads and the LTE Box equipments (determined by customer requirements). Should the AC mains fail, the ADUA or ADUB provides a battery supply to the loads for a duration depending on the DC load and battery capacity.

CCUA operation The CCUA is a programmable unit and provides control and monitoring functions. The functions effected by the CCUA are as follows:

management of the Site Support cabinet or Integrated Battery Backup Unit (IBBU)

battery and power management. Should the AC mains fail, the CCUA causes the system to enter the battery back-up mode of operation. During this condition, the level of battery output voltage is monitored for battery ‘low alarm level’ and ‘low level disconnect’ and appropriate action undertaken by the CCUA should either event become present.

•

climatic control. The temperature within the cabinet is monitored and the speed of the fans (controlled by the temperature of the rectifiers) is adjusted accordingly to maintain the temperature within specific constraints.

alarm reporting. An alarm is generated by the CCUA should an alarm state prevail and this is sent to the base station via the Q1-bus.

During operation of the UltraSite Support, the CCUA monitors and provides functions and controls. Should a failure occur in the UltraSite Support, the CCUA generate an alarm which is transmitted to the base station via the Q1-bus. If the failure is an AC mains failure then the CCUA places the Support system into the Battery back-up mode. There are three modes of operation and these are described in the following sections. Battery back-up mode

In this mode of operation, the batteries provide the DC power requirements of the Support system and the base station. During this time, the CCUA monitors the DC voltage level and should the level falls to the battery low level parameter, a Battery Low alarm is raised. If the DC voltage level continues to fall and goes below the Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) level, the CCUA disconnects the battery supply from the load via the LVD relay. This condition is maintained until the Support system DC voltage is above 50 V then the batteries are reconnected. Site support mode

This mode is entered when the CCUA detects that the Support Mode is active. The mode is used to manually or automatically effect a battery test. During this mode of operation, the CCUA reduces the rectifier (BATA) output to the level of the Support Mode level. The whole DC power is then taken from the batteries. Normal operation is resumed when the tests have been completed satisfactorily and the Support Mode signal disappears. Boost charge mode

The CCUA monitors the status of the batteries to determine whether or not boost charging of the batteries is required. This can be done on a periodic basis or when the batteries have been discharged below a set DC value (automatic). The maximum boost charge duration is 2 hours after which time, normal system operation is resumed. Periodic boost charging does not occur unless 16 weeks (user determined) have elapsed since the previous boost charging had been carried out. Also, if the battery temperature is equal or in excess of +30ºC. During battery charging, the current level is monitored and maintained within set limits by the CCUA.

2.2.1

Unit fan: rectifier internal temperature compensation The CCUA monitors the internal temperature (once a minute) of the rectifier units and controls the unit fan speeds accordingly; 1 fan unit/2 rectifiers. Control of the unit fan speed is realised according to the warmer rectifier and adjusted until the cooler rectifier cools down to a level at which juncture the fan is switched OFF. The unit fan speed is set to a minimum if the temperature information from both associated rectifiers is missing. The temperature of the rectifiers is measured once a minute by the CCUA and is undertaken by software control The unit fans are switched off if the temperature of the rectifier units is below the set level (+10ºC) and switch on when the temperature is above this level. The unit fan speed increases from 40% (PWM signal 25%) to 100%. The relationship between the PWM and fan speed is a straight line function. The following Table 2gives some figures:

When PWM control is < 20% and fan control is > 80%, the fan is stopped. The CCUA generates an alarm should a fan stop rotating and an alarm if rotation of a unit fan is too slow compared to the PWM signal (see Alarms 3.2.3. The fan speed is also dependent on the supply voltage. The CCUA checks that the reduced fan speed is not attributable to reduced voltage by comparing the rotation speed (rpm) measurements with other fans. An alarm is activated if the other fans are rotating at the desired speed (see Alarms 3.2.3. The fans can be controlled separately for test purposes

2.2.2

Cabinet fan 1 (Support cabinet) The cabinet cooling fan is used exclusively in the outdoor UltraSite Support cabinet. The maximum speed of the cabinet fan is 75% of rated value to reduce the noise level but without diminishing the effect of the airflow. This fan is controlled in the following manner: •

Speed of fan is the same as the speed of the slowest unit fan except when the unit fan speed is 100% when the cabinet fan speed is then 75%. When the speed of the fastest unit fan goes below 100%, the cabinet fan speed reduces its speed to the slowest unit fan speed in a stepped manner (10% change/1 minute. If one unit fan is controlled OFF, the cabinet fan is also controlled OFF (except if the other unit fan is rotating at 75% speed)

•

Fan is controlled OFF if cabinet heater is ON

•

Fan is controlled OFF if the cabinet door is OPEN.

•

Fan is controlled to FULL speed when the battery temperature HIGH alarm is ON and the batteries are in the cabinet

The CCUA generates an alarm should a fan stop rotating and an alarm if rotation of an unit fans is too slow compared to the PWM signal (see Alarms Chapter 3.2.3). The fan speed is also dependent on the supply voltage. The CCUA checks that the reduced fan speed is not attributable to reduced voltage by comparing the rotation speed (rpm) measurements with other fans (to unit fans in case of cabinet 1 fan, and to cabinet 1 fan and unit fans in Support cabinet in the case of cabinet 2 fan). An alarm is activated if the other fans are rotating at the desired speed (see Alarms 3.2.3. The fans can be controlled separately for test purposes

2.2.3

Cabinet 2 fan (in extension cabinet - battery cabinet) The cabinet cooling fan is used exclusively in the outdoor UltraSite Support cabinet. The maximum speed of the cabinet fan is 75% of rated value to reduce the noise level but without diminishing the effect of the airflow. This fan is controlled in the following manner:

Speed control is based on the temperature of the battery cabinet. If the cabinet temperature is below the fixed level (+10ºC), the fan is switched OFF. The fan switches ON when the temperature goes above the fixed level. The cabinet fan speed increases from 40% (PWM signal 25%) to 75% maximum (see Table in Section 3.2.5).

AC heater operation AC heaters are used for battery heating. Heating control is effected by the BOI in the base station for the IBBS cabinet. In the case of the Support cabinet and extension cabinet, heating control is done by the CCUA. UltraSite Support cabinet

The rectifier internal temperature information is not used to control the cabinet heater. The CCUA monitors the battery temperature (sensor on the lower batteries) and controls the AC heater (s) in the cabinet. If the battery temperature is below the programmed level (0ºC), the cabinet heater is switched ON via a relay. When the temperature goes above the programmed level (10ºC), the cabinet heater is switched OFF. UltraSite Support extension cabinet

The CCUA monitors the battery temperature (sensor on the lower batteries) and controls the AC heater (s) in the extension cabinet. If the battery temperature is below the programmed level (0ºC), the cabinet heater is switched ON via a relay. When the temperature goes above the programmed level (10ºC), the cabinet heater is switched OFF.

2.2.5

Battery cooling interface The cabinet fans are controlled in the manner described in Section 3.2.5. The CCUA monitors the battery temperature and when the ‘Battery Temperature High’ alarm is signalled, the cabinet fan is controlled to full speed under the control of the BOI in the case of the IBBU cabinet, and under the control of the CCUA in the other two cases (Support cabinet and Extension cabinet).

2.2.6

Battery test The batteries can be tested automatically from the CCUA, or manually either locally from the CCUA front panel LMP connector and laptop computer (RS232 interface) or remotely from the NMS (Q1-bus; RS485 interface).

Automatic battery testing can be arranged to occur a number of times during a year; 4 times a year is the usual figure. The period of a test is pre-defined. The batteries must be in a fully charged state before automatic testing can take place. this status is determined by the CCUA. The ‘Battery Failure’ alarm occurs when the battery output voltage is too low during the automatic test. The test is discontinued should the output voltage of the batteries fall below the ‘Support Mode’ level, and this is the lower level for discharge of the batteries during automatic testing. When manual testing of the batteries is taking place, the ‘Support Mode’ level can be activated locally via a CCUA front panel connector or remotely from the NMS. During a battery test (automatic or manual), the DC output from the rectifiers is decreased to the ‘Support Mode’ level. At this time, the power for the load is taken from the batteries.

2.3

Construction The AC/DC Connection Unit (ADUA or ADUB) is located at the top of the Site Support cabinet or at the bottom of the IBBU located in a Nokia UltraSite GSM EDGE BTS cabinet. The ADUA/B contains the Controller Unit (CCUA) which is a plug-in module located at the front, bottom of the ADUA or ADUB.

General description

The CCUA consists of a PCB on which are mounted two 64-pin connectors at the rear and a panel on the front. The assembly fits onto guides at the bottom of the ADUA/B and when fully inserted, the two 64-pin connectors push fit into connectors on the backplane. Handles on the front panel facilitate the insertion and removal of the CCUA. The two 64-pin connectors provide the connectivity for control and monitoring functions of the CCUA. The front panel comprises the following listed items:

Interfaces This section details the connectors and interfaces associated with the AC/DC Distribution Unit (ADUA and ADUB) and the Controller Unit (CCUA). The CCUA is integral with the ADUA or ADUB and is located at the front, bottom. This unit can be removed without complete system shutdown.

3.1

ADUA and ADUB The ADUA supports configurations ranging from a minimum base station configuration in the same cabinet (up to 6 TRXs) to a maximum of 18 TRXs formed by a two cabinet configuration. The ADUB supports configurations ranging from a minimum base station configuration in a separate cabinet (up to 12 TRXs) to a maximum of 36 TRXs formed by a three cabinet configuration.

DC to BTS

The ADUA provides a DC output to BTS 1 which constitutes the main BTS and BTS 2 which is the extension BTS. Each circuit is protected by a series connected double-pole circuit breaker. Battery type terminals are used to facilitate the connections. In the case of the ADUB, three DC outputs are provided; one to the basic BTS (BTS 1), a second to the extension BTS (BTS 2), and a third to the extension II BTS (BTS 3). Each output is protected by a series connected double-pole circuit breaker. DC battery output

The ADUA provides a single DC output to the batteries whilst the ADUB provides two. Connection is made via battery terminal type connectors. Each circuit is protected by a circuit breaker, and a relay is used to prevent the batteries from deep discharging under the control of the CCUA. DC output to the LTEs

There is no LTE DC output connection from the ADUA. The ADUB provides two sets of LTE connections; a low current and a high current output. In the low current case (6 A rating), twelve DC outputs are provided (LTE 1-12) and these are combined into two sets of six outputs on two connectors on the front panel. Each line is protected with a 4 A fuse (present on the front panel) and associated with each fuse on the front panel is an LED. The LED is lit RED should the associated fuse blow. In the high current case (10 A rating), two DC outputs are provided (LTE 13 and 14) and each is combined on a connector on the front panel. A circuit breakers protects each DC output. The ADUA and ADUB each provide a single DC output to the CCUA. Connection is made inside the ADUA or ADUB. The circuit is protected with a series connected fuse and associated with the supply is an LED. Should the fuse blow then the fuse is lit RED. DC output to fans

Rectifier interface Information is conveyed between the CCUA and the rectifiers via the RS485-bus. The information is as follows:

LTEx interface The LTEx unit provides IP5x protection, heating and cooling for user’s IP20 class LTE equipment and are only used in the outdoor cabinet. The interface consists of alarm inputs and the RS485-bus is used between the CCUA and the LTEx. The CCUA monitors the status of the LTE alarm signals (see Alarms 3.2.3

LED details The function of the LED on the CCUA front panel is as follows:
