How to make bump keys from a depth and spacing guide
Tools you will need: 1) Print the depth and spacing guide below. 2) A digital micrometer, that can take readings in inches 3) A simple Key Clipper, or file. (key clipper can be purchased here : http://www.lockpicks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=628 ) This is what it looks like:
Technique: First you will need to know how to use the information in the depth and spacing guide. Each manufacturer has it’s own section or two below. The items you will concern yourself with are the following: 1. Shoulder to first cut 2. Center to center 3. and the “Root Depth” number of the highest # in the first column. The highest number is typically 9, but this is not always the case. To determine where to put each of your key cuts you will first take the shoulder to first cut data. Measure from the shoulder of the key out the distance listed. For example Kwickset shoulder to first cut is .247” look at the graphic below, the shoulder is marked, and the point to which you are measuring (the center of the cut) is marked. Shoulder

The next cut will be determined by measuring from the center of the first cut out towards the tip of the key. The center-to-center measurement will tell you the length that you will need to go out. The picture below has the center of the first cut marked, and the center of the spot where the next cut will go.

The next item you need to consider is how deep to cut for a bump key. The root depth of the #7 column in Kwickset is .191 inches. This is the measurement of the space between the bottom of the cut and the bottom of the key. See picture below for the spots to measure from. You will need to complete this measurement for each of your cuts. Cut/Root depth

If you are using files, make sure that the angles of the peeks in the key are angled shallow enough that the key will go in smoothly and come out smoothly. I do not recommend a file for the beginner, unless you are skilled with files.
The File method: Tools needed: 1) Pippin #6 file
2) The printable to scale templates on the last page of this document. Technique: 1) This is a basic technique. Print the last page of this document in the following manor a. Select File, Print b. Select the correct printer c. Under the “Print range section” select the page “7” to “7”. d. Under the “Page Handeling” section make sure you change the “Page Scaling” to “None. e. Print the page either on labels, or print them and use rubber cement to affix the cut out key template to the key. 2) File down the key blank until the metal is at the same height as the black line of the template outline. 3) Smooth out any rough edges, and make sure that all angles of the keys are not too steep. If the back side of the angles is too steep the key will get stuck in any lock you put it in.
No matter how you make the depth key, after you are done you must file off ½ to ¼ mm from both the tip of the key and the shoulder. (see figure below)
