Lesson Plan Course Title: Cosmetology I Session Title: Nail Art Techniques Performance Objective: Upon completion of this assignment, the student will be able to correctly apply nail art to a nail.

Specific Objectives: Assemble required supplies to complete work assignment. Demonstrate the application of nail art lines. Demonstrate the application of nail art stones. Demonstrate the marbling technique. Materials Needed: Diskette, pen, paper, paper towels, Q-Tips, assorted striper polishes, assorted stones, tweezers, hairpins Equipment Needed: Web TV or Projector for PPT Learner The student should have mastered manicuring and pedicuring. The student should provide pen, paper, practice finger, base polish, and top coat. Introduction Introduction (LSI Quadrant I): SAY: Students, now that you’ve mastered basic nail care, you are ready to learn some basic nail art. None of the following techniques are particularly difficult, but practice is needed to achieve professional looking results. We are going to learn and practice the striping techniques, stone application, and marbling techniques. Let’s get started. Outline Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Objectives Students will review supplies needed.

Activities/ Training Methods The instructor will review all necessary supplies needed for nail art.

Students will polish their practice finger.

Student practice using striper polish. (Quadrant 2 & 3)

Student practice applying stones. (Quadrant 2 & 3)

Student review color wheel.

The instructor should have all students polish their practice finger with a neutral color. This will allow students to see their nail art. Dark base colors make it difficult to display nail art. The instructor will begin the lesson by demonstrating the striper polish application. Show students the correct way to lay the brush on the nail surface. The brush should then be swept up to leave the thin line opposite the starting point. Discuss with students the different areas of the nail that striper polish can be used. The instructor should allow students to practice applying striper polish to their practice fingers. Reteach as needed. The instructor should demonstrate for students the correct way to apply decorative stones to their nail art. Encourage students to apply stones over their striper polish as an accent. Point out that the use of stones adds glitter and sparkle to any nail design, but can be overused. The instructor should allow students to practice stone application. Reteach as needed. The instructor should discuss marbling techniques. Point out to students that in order to marble successfully, both polish colors must be wet. This means only one nail at a time can be completed. Colors should be contrasting in order for both to be visible. Review color wheel. The instructor should demonstrate marbling

techniques. Polish the nail with a thick coat. Quickly apply 3 drops of contrasting color on top of the wet nail. Using the ball tip of a hair pin, show students how to swirl colors together. Instructor should allow students to practice marbling techniques. If students do not want to remove the nail art from their practice fingers, allow them to practice on each other.

Application Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Guided practice occurs throughout the lesson plan. The instructor should watch carefully for necessary reteach.

Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III): Independent practice occurs throughout the lesson. Students will demonstrate all three techniques on their practice finger. Summary Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV): Students will review the lesson objectives to make sure they have accomplished all of them. Evaluation Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III): Informal assessment occurs during student practice time.

Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV): Students will receive a grade for each of the three applications according to the rubric.

Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV): Students will be given the opportunity to practice these techniques during customer lab days. This is a good service to sell during holidays or prom time. Encourage students to practice nail art on pedicure clients.
