Reading 11 Read the text. Why are all the tribes in the Amazon unique? (2 marks) _________________________________________ _________________________________________
Tribes of the Amazon The Amazon, in South America, is the world’s largest rainforest. It is also home to several hundred thousand tribespeople. These are divided into hundreds of different tribes, and each tribe has its own language, culture and territory. Many of these have had some contact with the outside world for over 500 years, but there are some, known as ‘uncontacted’ tribes, who have had no contact at all. Most of the tribes live in villages near rivers, and grow their own vegetables and fruit such as corn, beans and bananas. They also hunt and fish. They use poison on their knives and arrows to catch the fish. Some tribes use guns for hunting and some use other weapons such as bows and arrows and spears. They believe in sharing the hunt and the food they gather. In fact, sharing is key to survival, as the Amazon is a tough and dangerous environment to live in. Traditionally, they live in communal or family houses made from materials such as tree bark and leaves. The uncontacted tribes usually live deep in the rainforest, far away from the rivers. Although there are many tribes in the Amazon, they all have one thing in common – they live in harmony with nature and have a deep respect for their environment. Today, many Amazon tribes face possible extinction as their way of life has been destroyed by people invading their land and the cutting down of trees for industrial projects such as mining. Charities around the world are working to help protect the Amazon tribes from extinction. Projects have been set up to provide education, medicine and employment to tribe members. These projects have been very successful.
