2.2 Functional Description (Fig. 1) The operating principle of the overspeed governor is as follows. A wire rope which is attached to the car, and which moves with it, runs over the pulley 1 of the overspeed governor, causing it to rotate. The pulley has a cam wheel and a series of teeth 5 built onto it. One end of a pendulum 2 , which is pivoted near to its mid--point, rides with a roller 10 on the cam wheel. The movement of the pendulum is restrained by a spring 3 . As the pulley rotates, the movement of the cam wheel, together with the force of the spring, causes the pendulum to oscillate about its pivot point. On the other end of the pendulum (the pendulum nose) 9 , a metal contact plate 4 is mounted so that it can turn about a pivot point 6 , and is held in its normal position by a snap catch 7 . At normal speeds, as the pulley rotates and the pendulum oscillates, the contact plate moves with the pendulum nose up and down without catching against the teeth. If the rated speed (as set by the spring) is exceeded, the moment of inertia of the pendulum becomes higher than the restoring moment caused by the spring. As a result, themetal contact plate catches against one of the teeth and turns about its pivot point 6 . This actuates the shut--off contact 8 , which turns off the drive. If the speed increases further, the pendulum nose itself 9 catches against a tooth 5 , thereby blocking the rotation of the pulley 1 for downward movement of the car. The resulting friction between the rope and thepulley groovecreates theforce needed to engage thesafety gear. To restore to operation, the metalcontact plate 4 must be turned back to engage the snap catch 7 , and the shut--off contact 8 must be closed. An increment pulse generator can be fitted as an alternative option. 2.3 Rope Tensioner (machine room at top and directly in line) Type using barite, guide --rail mounted Fig. 2

3.2 General Checks of GBP -- Check general condition, clean if necessary -- Caution: Do not oil any parts -- Check mounting bolts and contact fixings; tighten if necessary A
-- On pendulum, check condition of roller -- On pendulum, check O rings of roller for cracks (on underside). -- On pendulum, check wear of bearing by measuring dimension A; if A < 1.0 mm, replace GBP (see Fig. 11). 3.3 General Checks of Tension Weights -- Check general condition, clean if necessary
Fig. 11 Measuring Dimension A
-- Check mounting bolts and contact fixings; tighten if necessary -- Check reserve travel available (Fig. 2 to Fig. 5 and Fig. 8) ; shorten governor rope if necessary (see Section 5.1). 3.4 Checking Drive Shut--off Contact (KBV) -- Make car call from controller cabinet -- Turn contact plate (Fig. 1, Item 4) about its pivot point until the drive shut--off contact KBV opens -- The car should stop. If it does not, there is a fault in the shut--off contact or its supply lead. -- Turn the contact plate back in the opposite direction until it is located by the snap catch (Fig. 1, Item 7) -- Close the shut--off contact again. 3.5 Checking Tension Weight Contact (KSSBV/KSSBVG), Fig. 2 and Fig. 8 -- Actuate tension weight contact at tension weight. -- Leave the hoistway pit, switch off the pit stop switch and close the doors. -- Call the car with a hall call. -- The car should not move. If it does, there is a fault in the tension weight contact (KSSBV/KSSBVG) or in its supply lead . n d y e t t r i a e d e i c p i o n r p o p c u l a e m u b m t o c r e c e h l l t r o i e t e n n n g i t n r n i u e r u o s t s n i o c a n c f o n u i n t e a a t t m i m r r r o w f o f r n i u d o e . d t n u s s a o u e r i t n h t o g i n r a i s w y p e t a d d s w i r s u y h i m n t h t o T I a t
-- Reset the tension weight contact to its operating position at the weight. 3.6 Checking Governor Rope and Rope Coupling Bracket -- The governor rope must not be relubricated. -- Check governor rope for any broken wires and replace it if necessary (see Section 5.2 for replacement procedure). -- Check general condition of coupling socket, rope clips and straight--wire spring. 3.7 Testing Rope Friction Force FC and Engagement of Safety Gear Method of checking The check to bemade is that the ropefrictionforce FCon the governorrope is at least twice as highas the engaging force FLC required at the governor lever on the car. This is done by halving the tensioning force FCU applied by the rope tensioner in the hoistway pit. The safety gear must engage with FCU/2.

-- Undo the bolt securing the weights, remove one weight and tighten up the nut again. -- The pivoting arm 2 must be in a horizontal position and must not slope downwards! If necessary the governor rope should be tightened to suit. Contact KSSBV on the tensioner must be closed. 3.7.2 Testing Procedure for both Types of Tension Weight Test procedure -- Testing should always be carried out on inspection travel with the car empty. -- Take the car to stop 2, switch off the installation and prepare for inspection travel. -- Short out the drive shut--off contact KBV1 (Fig. 1, Item 8).Use a clearly visible jumper! -- Switch on the installation, take the car downwards at inspection speed and engage governor GBP by hand during the travel. The safety gear should now engage and via contacts KF and KF1 should bring the elevator installation to a halt. -- Switch off the installation. Release the drive brake by hand until the car has left the position at which it was stopped by the safety gear and then engage the brake again. Reset contacts KF and KF1. Close drive shut--off contact (Fig. 1, Item 8) and remove the jumper! . n d y e t t r i a e d e i c p i o n r p o p c u l a e m u b m t o c r e c e h l l t r o i e t e n n n g i t n r n i u e r u o s t s n i o c a n c f o n u i n t e a a t t m i m r r r o w f o f r n i u d o e . d t n u s s a o u e r i t n h t o g i n r a i s w y p e t a d d s w i r s u y h i m n t h t o T I a t
-- The rope tensioner in the pit must now be reset to its normal state (see Fig. 2 to Fig. 5). (If sandstone block, return to outer end of pivoting arm. If barite block, replace the one that was removed and secure the two blocks with the shared bolt!) -- Reset the installation to the normal mode. -- Fill in Test Report Form F 602 616 D (for a typical example see Section 7.5)! This report must be kept in a safe place until the next test. -- Check dimension A (see Section 3.2).

3.7.3 Further Action -- If correct operation of the safety gear and governor can be confirmed in the test report, the testing is completed. -- If on the other hand the safety facilities, safety gear or governor were not operating correctly, then proceed as follows: -- Measure the engagement force FLC at the governor lever. It should be a maximum of 250 N ! If it is higher than this, the tension or torsion spring fitted should be checked and if necessary reset or replaced. -- Check the governor rope for wear and replace it if necessary. -- Check the tension weight in the pit. -- The pivoting arm must be free to move about its pivot point. A spacer washer may need to be removed. -- Check and reweigh the tension weight. Barite: 2x4 kg Calcareous sandstone: 7.3 kg -- If no faults can be found, repeat the test. If the results are still unsatisfactory, exchange the overspeed governor! The test must then be repeated! 3.8 Testing Tripping Speed VCA The purpose of testing the tripping speed is to ensure that the installation has been fitted with the correct GBP and that the GBP is undamaged and well functioning. All that is tested in this case is the tripping of the drive shut--off contact. The mechanical tripping follows inevitably and therefore need not be tested separately. -- Use a rag to hold the governor rope and move it over into the test groove. To do this it may be necessary to relieve the load on the rope by raising the tension weight. -- For machine room at rear or at side: Use the adjusting bolt to line up the tensioning pulley on the pivoting arm with the test groove. 19 mm across flats Adjusting bolt When testing the tripping speed a basic distinction must be made between overspeed governors with and without incremental pulse generators. 3.8.1 Testing Tripping Speed without an Incremental Pulse Generator. -- Give a call to take car upwards (at normal speed). -- The overspeed caused by the rope running in the test groove should trip at least the drive shut--off contact. If tripping fails to occur correctly, see Section 4.1. Modification: Date:

3.8.2 Testing Tripping Speed with an Incremental Pulse Generator -- Where the overspeed governor is fitted with an incremental pulse generator, the tripping speed must not be tested by moving the rope over into the test groove. Additional tools and equipment:
-- Tachometer, sampling period ® 1/10 s: if possible with memory for maximum measured speed. -- Extra weight (see Fig. 9)
-- Position the empty car near the top of the hoistway so that it is possible to step onto the car roof from the top floor and work can be done from it. -- The main power switch must be switched off. -- Clamp the governor rope by engaging the pendulum nose. -- Use the governor rope on the car to engage the safety gear. Disconnect the rope coupling bracket from the governor lever (the rope is an endless loop).Secure the governor lever in the position that engages the safety gear (fit a loop of rope between the lever and a guide rail bracket). -- Fit the extra weight above the rope coupling bracket (see Fig. 9). -- Set the governor to the operating position and lower the rope coupling bracket down to a point below the car. -- Allow the excess weight provided by the coupling bracket and the extra weight to accelerate the governor (a low acceleration), measure the speed at which the governor trips, and note it. -- Repeat the measurement process correctly three times and calculate the average of the three measurements. -- The governor is not operating correctly if the average is outside the upward VCA tolerance given in the table below. In case of incorrect tripping check according to Section 4.1. An easier method for testing the tripping speed is the use of GB--TS1 (Overspeed Governor Test--Set) instead of this extra weight.

Downward deviations are permitted provided they do not result in faulty operation.
The inexact measurement conditions are taken into consideration in these values.
4 Faults 4.1 Incorrect Tripping -- Check the overspeed governor data against the installation data -- Check the speed of the elevator -- Check that the control system is operating correctly. If discrepancies are found, or if there is a fault in the governor, the governor must always be exchanged. It isnot allowed to do any work on the overspeed governor fitted in the installation. 4.2 Tension Weight Contact Actuated Check reserve rise available at tension weight and make any correction needed.
5 Corrective Maintenance Details of the spares required can be found in the spares catalog. Setting and corrective maintenance work on the GBP for which the seals have to be removed may only be undertaken by an authorized factory. 5.1 Shortening Governor Rope -- Position the car so that it is possible to step onto the car roof and work from it, and also so that the hoistway pit is accessible. -- Use the governor rope on the car to engage the safety gear . . n d y e t t r i a e d e i c p i o n r p o p c u l a e m u b m t o c r e c e h l l t r o i e t e n n n g i t n r n i u e r u o s t s n i o c a n c f o n u i n t e a a t t m i m r r r o w f o f r n i u d o e . d t n u s s a o u e r i t n h t o g i n r a i s w y p e t a d d s w i r s u y h i m n t h t o T I a t
-- Fix the governor lever in the position that engages the safety gear. -- Fix the tension weight in its fully up position (Fig. 2 to Fig. 5). -- Advance the governor rope in the bottom rope socket of the coupling bracket to tighten it and secure it again in the socket. -- Shorten any extra rope. -- Lower the weight of the tensioner again. -- Move the car to release it from the safety gear (release the brake) and reset the safety gear contacts.

6 Restoring to Operation after Actuation of Safety Gear (Fig. 1) -- If a recall control is not available, haul up the car by hand from the position in which the safety gear stopped it. -- Turn back the contact plate 4 until it is located by the snap catch 7 and reset the drive shut--off contact 8 to its correct operating position. -- Reset the safety gear contacts on the car.
7 Replacing Existing Overspeed Governors by GBP Governors In the GBP overspeed governor, the rope friction force FL depends on the tensioning force FCU. When other types of governor are being replaced the following checks (adaptations) are necessary: 7.1 Tensioning Weight Check the force FCU and adapt it to 225 N Fig. 15
