Theory: ASTM E290 E290 covers covers a bend test for flat metal samples samples of metallic metallic material. material. Most tests are performed as a 3 pt. bend test at either a 90 or 180 degree angle. In many cases this is a pass/fail test. If the metal sample does not crack or break at the specified angle, it passes the test.
Geometry: The 3 point bend test can be performed on different sized samples. There are several key paramaters including the sample thickness (T), and the sample width (W). Also, the radius (R) of the bending fin or loading nose, and the distance (C) between the two loading points are important. In cylindrical samples the Diameter (D) of the rod is used instead of the Thickness (T) of the sheet.
Solution: Universal Grip offers an adjustable bend fixtue which can be used in conjunction with a Galdabini Universal testing machine. The distance (C) between the two loading supports is adjustable on the fixture.. This feature allows testing to be done on different sized sample specimens. The sample is fixture bent using a Universal Testing Machine.
There are several global standards that specify mechanical properties and/or testing requirements for steel reinforcing bar (rebar). Some of the most common include ASTM A370, ISO 15630-1, BS 4449, AS/NZS 4671, JIS G 3112, GB 1499, and ACI 318. These stan dards include testing requirement that are specific to determining rebar tensile and bend properties. Many of these rebar standards also make reference to the widely recognized metals tensile testing standards, such as ASTM E8, ISO 6892 -1, EN 10002-1, AS 1391, JIS Z 2241, GB/T 228.1 for general tensile testing guidance. Typical results include Yield Point (ReH, Drop of Beam, Zero Slope), Proof Strength or Offset Yield Strength (Rp0.2, 0.2% Offset Yield), Tensile Strength (Rm), Elongation at Maximum Force (Ag, Agt) and Elongation after Fracture (A). The basic test and challenges are similar regardless of the specific standard being followed.
