Big Band arrangement of Beach Boys tune by Gordon Goodwin. All parts and scoreFull description
The Kovalam Beach Resort is located on a cliff in Kovalam beach, Trivandrum, Kerala. The architect uses vernacular materials and opens the structure up to the views beyond. The master plan therefore does not concentrate all the facilities in one area, but generates a larger number of potential growth points, thus allowing a more flexible response to future demands. Throughout the project. the construction is in traditional vernacular of Kerala: viz, white plastered walls with red tiled roofs; other pavilions consist of light bamboo chhatris with coir matting on the floor and local Kerala handicrafts.
Slope gradient- 1m rise in 2.9m
Mangalore tiles have been used to make the roofs. The roofs form a uniform slope on the facade, leaving only the sundecks exposed. Functionally, this pyramid-like structure also allows each room to be well ventilated and well-lit while providing a view towards the sea.
This section shows how the structure negotiates the slope in a respectful manner. Correa has build into the slope, i.e, the outer reaches of the slope creates sundecks, and the rooms itself have been cut into the hill. He has used the slope to create the various stories of the resort. The rooms are accessed from the interior of the slope, and then open out towards the view of the sea.
