Have everyone get out of the vehicle and stay in a safe place, away from traffic and away from the vehicle. Block the tire diagonally opposite the flat tire to keep the vehicle from rolling when jacked up. Follow manufacturer instructions to remove each item. Spare tires should be secured and covered when when stored. Use good body mechanics for all procedures.

Use the tire iron to loosen, but not remove, the lug nuts. Unscrew lug nuts about half a turn. The lug (wheel) nuts are loosened in a star pattern to maintain stability of the tire. The nuts turn counter-clockwise. To get maximum leverage, which reduces the force necessary, fit the wrench to the nut so the handle is on the right side; grasp the wrench near the end of the handle. Pull up on the handle.

Installation of tires without good metal contact can cause lug nuts to loosen and eventually cause a tire to come off while driving

Ensure good metal contact by using a wire brush or cloth
You will need more ground clearance when putting on the spare tire than when removing the flat tire. Complete the removal of the lug nuts. See Step 5 regarding loosening of the lug nuts. Lift the flat tire straight off the wheel. Place it either a safe distance away from your work area or under the axle to provide additional support in the event the jack slips. Before putting on tires, remove any corrosion on the mounting surfaces with a wire brush or cloth.

Roll the spare tire into position and align the holes in the rim with the bolts on the wheel. Lift up the tire and get at least the top bolt started through its hole.

Reinstall all the lug nuts

Wiggle the tire and push it back over the remaining bolts. Reinstall the lug nuts with tapered end inward and tighten with fingers. Push back on the tire and tighten each lug nut by hand as tight as you can. Turn the jack handle counterclockwise to lower the vehicle.
