iThought So The spunky performer has been chatting to a beautiful young lady at the bar for almost an hour now. He s bought her a few drinks, and she has giggled innocently at every ounce of his witty charm. !

It is all going well. Performer:

What are your plans for the weekend then?

Young Lady:

I was supposed to be seeing some friends, but if something better comes along...

She flirts. Performer:

Well, me and my friends are in the final round of this pub quiz. It started off as a bit of fun, but we keep winning. So all of a sudden, we ve started taking it really seriously. We ve gone so far as to start revising. "

She giggles. Young Lady:

I know what you mean. I have a competitive side too.

Performer:

It s a music quiz, what kind of music are you in to?

Young Lady:

Mavin Gaye, and anything like that.

"

They leave together, bound for his hotel. He retires from mentalism and quickly discovers friends who have real hobbies like sport and Playstation. No, not really. Performer:

I don t know about you, but I just hate to lose. My team really want to win. It s not about the prize. In fact we only win a crate of Budweiser. It s the prestige. "

Young Lady:

Yeah, I know what you mean.

Performer:

So this week is the final. And it s music, like I said. So each of us has taken one of the musical eras and spent the last week researching everything we can about it. That way we figure we ll have the best chance of doing well. "

Performer:

Well, to be honest it s a time I didn t know much about at all. The 60s. So I ve been looking at who was born, who "

had kids, who was married and who died throughout that time. I have most of it down. Actually there is something I ve been struggling with. Maybe you could help me out? "

The Young Lady smiles and leans in. Young Lady:

I will try.

From his pocket, the performer removes his wallet. Performer:

Well, you can see here in my wallet I ve got a piece of paper. Basically that has the list of the top 10 best selling songs from the 1960s. It s kind of ridiculous that I am find with remembering the real names of the super stars of that time, but for some reason the top 10 singles just won t stick in my mind. "

So here is how I m hoping you can help me out. "

Give me a number between 1 and 10 and I ll see if I can remember the song that is at that position. Go ahead name one. "

Young Lady:

Four.

The performer suddenly goes from confident to somewhat lacking. Deeply searching within himself, he eventually admits defeat.

Performer:

I m so sorry, I told you I was finding it hard. I ll have to take a look. "

He takes the list out of his wallet. See, I knew number one was Elvis Presley, and number two...ah number four Build Me Up Buttercup by those damned Foundations. Suddenly a moment of astonishment comes across his face. Wait a minute. This is so freaky. Like really strange. You know like when people have known each other for years and they say the same things at the same time? The lady looks curious. Young Lady:

Yes?


Performer:

Well of all the songs you could have been drawn towards just now, you went for The Foundations , Build Me Up Buttercup. Do you like that song? "

Young Lady:

Not particularly.

Performer:

No, me neither. But you were drawn to it. Stranger still. Even though I don t like especially like that song, pick up my iPod. "

The performer gestures to the iPod that has been sat on the bar the entire time. There is a song paused mid-song isn;t there? Just press play. She does. The chorus of Build Me Up Buttercup plays. NOW they leave together. This is a truly astonishing effect. Not only amazing - but simple, and impromptu with very little work required.


An Explanation Let s have one ey? !

What I really love about this routine is how simple it is to have upon your person at all times. Then how extremely simple it is to introduce this routine without the people around you knowing that you re even heading for a fantastic moment of mentalism. "

The presentation of the pub quiz totally reels everyone in. Then you have this fantastic moment of apparent failure, this creates a real human element to the performer that brings the audience all the closer to him. Now the climax is incredibly powerful, even more than before. The routine came about when I got my very first wallet that allowed for a billet index. It was the Stealth Assassin, produced by Pete Nardi at Alakazam. Essentially, what I have here are 10 slips of paper inside of my wallet, so no matter which number between 1 and 10 is named, I produce the paper with Build Me Up Buttercup next to that number. I ll give you all of the things to print out in a moment, rather than spend the hour or so it took me - I ve done the hard work for you. Just print and use. "

Anyway, back to what is going on. I created this routine with the gaff in hand first. The wallet. There are many wallets around that allow you to hide an index inside. The Steal Assassin is the one I used to employ. I now use one of the wallets from Outlaw Effects. One of the suggestions that came included with that Stealth was that you have a list of objects, numbered 1-10 in your wallet. The person names a number, you take out the list and you predict the thing next to that number. I thought that was quite a nice idea. My reservation was WHY. Why did you have a list of objects, countries or people in your wallet, named 1-10? The gray cells of my mind jiggled and eventually I came to the idea of something that would be numbered. The top 10. Now the reason I use 1960s music is because it is all the more unlikely that anyone will question which songs sold better than others. Yet many of the songs from that era are still known by modern audiences. It fits perfectly. So the set up is simple. You have the 10 lists hidden in your wallet. On the first list, Build Me Up Buttercup (or whatever force song you choose) is printed next to the number 1. On the 2nd list, the same song appears next to the number two. And so on. Now you introduce the story, just exactly as the Performer does in the apparently imaginary situation outlined earlier.


Talk about the quiz, the competitiveness and your task to memorise the top 10. Tell of your struggle and ask that they help you out. This creates a great positive attitude in the other person. One of wanting to assist, rather that one of conflict which so much mentalism asks for. Now ask the person to call out a number between 1 and 10. Often at this point you d be met with resistance saying you re a mind reader, you tell me . However under these circumstances it would make no sense for your volunteer to make such a statement. So they are very forthcoming. "

Now as soon as they have called out the number, you know which list to remove from you wallet. But, not so fast. Take your time. At this point your audience believe this to be a memory test. So we must fein recalling the song at that position. Show some struggle then, ultimately fail. Only with an expression of defeat do you now go in to your wallet and remove the correct slip of paper that will show the force song at the position they just named. Then the rest, as they say is presentation. On the following 2 pages are the 10 lists I use (and have used for the past 4/5 years now). That should save you some considerable hours of putting this together. Just print them out, cut them up and start using this. Thanks for your support!
