PREF*CE *C9NO8+E46EMENT Internship report is essential part of MSc. Mass Communication degree program. Internship provides complete practical knowledge of the areas we passed through our course work. It makes us aware of the practical and technical requirement in the eld. I am grateful to Almighty *++*H3 whose lessings have always een sources of encouragement for me and who gave me the aility to complete this task. I wish our heartiest thanks to my parents

()(C*&I+( S*MMA,"M #$% channel is a ,adio channel and all its operations are ased on providing the audience with information news entertainment and educating them. In this internship report I have descrie aout the working of the "M #$% channel in detail. &his report highlights how a "M Channel channel works how it is managed and controlled. &he daily operations of the channel have een descried as well which ranges from collection of news to disseminating of news or the nal roadcast. In simple a full summary of the whole process that how the news is made from where it comes from and how it is collected and who collects it to whom it is forwarded where it reaches how it is treated what are the essential components of news through what process it passes in to its nal shape and up to the nal roadcast has een included in this report. It is two months therefore I have to spend a week or two so that I may gra all the process that takes place in the organi/ation with open mind. In the report I have descried aout the di!erent o0ces that look after the daily work and operations of the news channel. &he way in which the channel works is also e'plained in the report who supervises the newsroom how the news is treated in news room and how it is transmitted to the general or desired pulic. . INTRO41CTION OF THE SECTOR &he media sector is a huge sector with diverse applications and workings. &he media sector is composed of various operations ranging from collection composing marketing and gathering dissemination nancing roadcasting pulishing of information for the etterment and educating informing the pulic at large. &he media sector consists of various mediums through which all these operations are carried out on instant asis. &he roadcast media the print media radio online and in short traditional and nontraditional media. Media sector serves the greater interest of pulic at large. &he media sector is governing y large organi/ation and groups with professional e'pertise and skills. &hese skills and professionalism is then transferred in to such high level of success that in terns estalishes the pulic opinion. &he media sector can e dened as comprising the creation modication transfer and distriution of media content for the purpose of mass consumption where7 ■

■
Mass consum$tion requires that the creation modication transfer or distriution is undertaken without knowledge of the specic identity of the people to whom the content is to e made availale.
&he meaning of each of these denitions is est understood y identifying what they e'clude. &he media sector involves a process through which rst the fruits of human creativity are converted to media content and second this media content is distriuted to and consumed y an audience unconnected to its original creation. &he essence of the media sector is the separation etween creation and distriution re:ecting the

Speech writing e'clusively for the speaker=s use with no prospect of any other distriution is not a media activity. The media sector
concerns mass consum$tion &he requirement that media e for mass consumption e'cludes various social and commercial e'changes where to the e'tent that content is created the audience reader or recipient is a specic individual or a ;closed group;. &he supply of voice telephony services allows the transmission of audio content from one person
13
to another ut falls outside the media sector due to the private nature of the communication. Similarly in consultancy industries where rms take on commissions to provide espoke advice to clients the consumer of any content created 8such as written reports9 is a specic party< these services therefore lie outside the media sector 8ut this does not preclude consultancy rms supplying media content as part of their usiness e.g. marketing pulications9. "or the purpose of dening the media sector mass consumption is not simply a matter of numers. &he actual audience or readership for some media content might e very small whilst forms of private communication might involve a large numer of people 8e.g. an e> mail to a very large group of recipients9 yet fall outside the media sector. &he supply of media content may e restricted and controlled in various ways ut this remains within the media sector so long as the restriction is not ased on the specic identity of the people 8or parties9 to whom the content is to e made availale. equipment is needed to consume the content. 2istorically the main industries within the media sector have een television and radio roadcasting the lm and recorded music industries and the printed press 8e.g. newspaper and ook pulishing9. Connected to these areas is the advertising industry which cuts across all media channels. More recently the Internet has provided a further channel through which a range of media content ? from te't to graphical and audiovisual content ? can e distriuted.
14
In parts of the media sector the traditional distriution channels have involved the transfer of content to a physical copy 8e.g. through the printing of a newspaper or the copying of a +2S video cassette9 followed y a logistical process 8e.g. delivery of newspapers to households supply through high street retail9. In other parts of the sector content has een distriuted through network infrastructure that was essentially devoted to that purpose such as terrestrial transmission networks for television and radio roadcasting. 1ith convergence and more specically digitali/ation the same 8digital9 content is often distriuted to consumers through a variety of distriution channels. &hese distriution channels are not used e'clusively y the media sector. "or instance a movie might e transmitted through a digital cale network or downloaded from the Internet< these same networks are also used to provide services outside the media sector such as voice telephony services. Media sector as encompassing road groups of supply chains that map the original creation 8or sourcing9 of content to its nal 8mass9 consumption involving various distriution networks and logistical arrangements.

It is the place where all the news comes in from di!erent sources such as reporters correspondents online fa' telephone etc &he main constituents of news room are ■
6etwork of computers connected to high speed internet connection.
■
"ive to ten &elevisions set for monitoring news.
■
A fa' machine for getting news items from di!erent ureaus reporters and correspondents.
■ ■
&elephone facility for getting calls on fresh news from reporters. A team of Anchors.
Assignment editor with deputy assignment editor for supporting hisGher work governs the newsroom. Assignment editor and sometimes deputy assignment editor assign the reporters daily work on di!erent eats. After covering the eats assigned they are sent to the assignment desk where they are processed y the
23
assignment editor and given nal shape. &he news sent y the reporter is edited and correct ecause the reporter makes on the spot necessary correction if it has something wrong. After this process of correction and editing the news item is sent to the composer where the news is composed on a computer system in a separate le where it gets saved. It is the case with monitored news in this process the news is collected from di!erent television channels where they provide fresh news of importance. &he crew on the computer system notes downs the news eing displayed on the monitoring &+ sets. &hey make news story from them and send it to the assignment editor where he makes necessary correction or edit it. &he crews working on the computer system are su editors they themselves make the news story from di!erent sources that is free of errors and credile. &he same news from monitoring after nal look is sent to the composition stage where its gets composed and saved. 6ews items are also sent through "a' machine from di!erent locations and ureaus the fa' machine is active @K hours a day. 6ews items from reporters and correspondents organi/ations etc are received on fa' machine. &he news story or item received on fa' machine is a full story with all the editing done. &he assignment editor checks such story and send it to the composition if it is of value and importance. It is the case with news items received from telephone calls ut there is some di!erence etween news attains from telephone call and news attain from other ways. &he news story is on oral foam and the sueditor has to collect news from that person either reporter or some other source and write it down on a page afterwards he corrects and makes the
24
story readale for the audience he gives it a nal shape after making it ased on the rule of Inverted pyramid style of 6ews. &he news is composed and saved as well. After all this process taking place in newsroom a undle of news items are collected. &he s)ug of these news items are otained and sent to the deputy assignment editor where he or she selects news ased on importance and value. &he news items are then selected and a rundo

As the name suggest it a place where news is constantly monitored. 6ews from di!erent sources is monitored and collected on di!erent devices attach such as &+ sets with cale connection on which di!erent foreign and national channels runs. &he news that is monitored and is important to e noted is captured on software which saves the footage directly on the computer system. After this +&, is some time used +&, is a device which is

called as video tape recorder which is connected to a computer system y the help of which news item of importance is recorded and catch in a D+. &he monitoring room or section consists of a network of few computers with software=s installed for capturing news items. A computer system with "& 8"ile transfer protocol9 software to receive news footages or packages from di!erent sources. Di!erent news organi/ation or reporters etc sends their footages or coverings on this "& system. Mostly the footages captured are sent to the 64( section where they are edited and made necessary changes so that the audio may look good to the audience. Also In this section a crew of su editors who edit the news footages or packages collected in the monitoring section. In most cases reporters send their packages or footages on D+ which requires some editing and correction which is also carried out in this section of monitoring y the su editors. &he software=s used for editing purposes are7 •

In this ministering section as I was told that we are registered with ,euters for getting updated footages of fresh and new events taking place all around the world. ,euters is paid on monthly asis some amount for providing this facility. &his is one of the iggest sources of getting footages. "ootage gets download on the system where the ,euters have provided them with a system composed of equipments and a computer system with its own software through which the le is downloaded and saved in a le or folder.
26
&his is all what I gone through in the monitoring section.
%., N+E @NON +INE*R E4ITIN6A &his is the section that I covered in my fth week of internship in "M #$% news department. 64( means non>linear editing. A non>linear editing system 864(9 is a video editing 864+(9 or audio editing 864A(9 system which can perform random access on the source material. 6on>linear editing for post>production is a modern editing method which involves eing ale to access any frame in a audio clip with the same ease as any other. &his method is similar in concept to the ;cut and paste; technique used in report editing from the eginning. 2owever when working with lm it is a destructive process as the actual lm negative must e cut. 6on>linear non>destructive methods egan to appear with the introduction of digital audio technology. Audio data are rst captured to hard disks or other digital storage devices. &he data is either recorded directly to the storage device or is imported from another source. 5nce imported they can e edited on a computer using any of a wide range of software. In non>linear editing the original source les are not lost or modied during editing. rofessional editing software records the decisions of the editor in an edit decision list 8(D49 which can e interchanged with other editing tools. Many generations and variations of the original source les can e'ist without needing to store many di!erent copies allowing for very :e'ile editing. It also makes it easy to change cuts and undo previous decisions simply y editing the edit decision list 8without having to have the actual lm data duplicated9. 4oss of
27
quality is also avoided due to not having to repeatedly re>encode the data when di!erent e!ects are applied. Compared to the linear method of tape>to>tape editing non>linear editing o!ers the :e'iility of audio editing with random access and easy proFect organi/ation. 1ith the edit decision lists the editor can work on low>resolution copies of the video. &his makes it possile to edit oth standard>denition roadcast quality and high denition roadcast quality very quickly on normal Cs which do not have the power to do the full processing of the huge full>quality high> resolution data in real>time. &he costs of editing systems have dropped such that non>linear editing tools are now within the reach of home users. Modern we ased editing systems can take audio directly from a phone over a ,S or J moile connection and editing can take place through a we rowser interface so strictly speaking a computer for video editing does not require any installed hardware or software eyond a we rowser and an internet connection. +arious editing tasks can then e performed on the imported video efore it is e'ported to another medium or MJ encoded for transfer to a CD. &hese equipmentEs are most commonly used in 64( sections

In the th week of my internship program I worked in the 6ews production section. &his is one of the important sections in a news channel. roduction room is the place where all the news production takes place. &his is a task which must e done with care and responsiility.

&he process of the news production starts when the composer prompts the news items. 5ne printed copy is given to the studio section to the anchor while the other copy is send to the production room. &he producer checks the news and rundown and asks the anchor to come and sit in the news studio for the recording of news. &he producer takes the rundown and asks the anchor to read the news ased on the rundown in order so that it may e easy for the editor to gra the news items in quick time on the software such as adoe premiere. &he producer through a mic connected to the anchor guide and tells him what to do and what not. In the news production the recording starts when the producer calls the anchor on the mic get ready the anchor make himself ready after which the producer tell him standy and then Cue with this cue the anchor starts reading out news. &he producer through a
29
device called as console adFusts the audio. +arious devices are attached to the console such as anchor mic headphone telephone line for eeper or call in etween news. If there occur a pause it is noted as a pause. If there occurs repetition of word or sentences he also note it down and if the producers thinks that the error is not that much harming he forgives re recording and corrects it in the editing process=s f he things that the mistake or the repetition is rutal he says that anchor to correct the error in order to e error free during editing and to save time. &he producer told me that time and decision>making is very important thing you must e following all the time. &his is for the fact that at times we done have audio or such report to e added in detail news we have to then thing what is the rst availale thing that we can add to it may e a audio eeper or some music that illustrate the story. &here is constant pressure on the producer in the newsroom ecause news is poured from the newsroom and he gets record it in very concise time. In such situation the producer has to e patient and cool minded to handle such deadlines and pressure. And it is the case with other mistakes. In this way the news is recorded I the production room. At times the producer asks the anchor to take a call from a reporter or correspondent on issue or news item that need e'planation. &his is called as 3eeper. In the case of eeper a wire is plugged in the console where the voice of the telephone or eeper is adFusted.
30
Most important here I may say that the news recording takes place in three steps such as7 5(6I6 5" 6(1S7 In the opening of news the anchor introduces him and welcomes the audience for listening the news. 2eadlines7 In the headline section the anchor read outs all the headlines that are written on three or four pages. 3reak in etween news7 A reak is taken announcing will meet in a while after a short reak.
