Introductory information
A ll pipeline systems require fittings. Owens-Corning has created a standardized line of GRP fittings that are fabricated from Owens-Corning pipe. The most common fittings required in a water supply or wastewater system are covered. The method of fabrication of all GRP fittings is essentially the same. Pipes, after plant QC hydrotesting to twice PN, are cut to the required dimensions. Pipe sections are then joined together using a laminated joint. The laminating process employs the use of alternating plys of chopped strand mat and woven roving embedded in a polyester resin matrix. The thickness and width of the lay-up is designed to match the axial strengths of the pipe in case of non-pressure (PN1) fittings, and the circumferential hoop strength of pressure (PN6-16) fittings. Owens-Corning’s standard fittings, as described in this catalogue, are utilized with the Flowtite ® coupling to join to adjacent pipe sections. They are not designed to be used in a pressure system where thrust r estraints, i.e., thrust blocks, are not utilized. Please refer to the Owens-Corning Pipe Handling and Installation Instructions, Pub. No. 15-PS-19596, for further details on proper construction of thrust blocks.
One of the many benefits of Owens-Corning pipe is the ability to fabricate a wide assortment of fittings, standard as well as non-standard. Sometimes, several fittings can b e prefabricated into one piece, making it easier for the er ection contractor to install. In the case of elbows, practically any turning radius can be fabricated by adjusting the mitering angle. In a few instances, Owens-Corning has even set up a special job site fabrication facility where very large fittings, too large to ship via truck or rail, have been assembled. The fabrication of fittings is not a specialty to Owens-Corning, it is an integral part of our business – one that we take very seriously.
