Environmentally Friendly Plating Process Since 1st July 2007 the EU End-o-lie Vehicle Vehicle Directive (ELV) came into orce. European Community Directive 2000/53/EG o 1st July 2002 • Directive manages vehicle recycling • Prohibition on the use o chromium-6, mercury and lead with specied exceptions and the prohibition o cadmium • Metallic chromium and chromium-3 compounds may may still be used Chromium-6 has been classied in the EU Directive 67/548/ EWG as Category 2, which means that this material can under certain circumstances act as a carcinogenic. Skin contact can bring about allergix reactions. Since 2006, all Parker steel ttings have been manuactured using trivalent chromate (Chromium-6-Free) plating . This new process enhances the corrosion resistance o the ttings, and is more environmentally riendly than the previous hexavalent hexavalent chromate plating. While the tting unction will not change, the tting color will. Fittings plated with trivalent chromate will be silver in color, not gold. This technical handbook and catalogue will provide a guide to correct hose and tting selection, as well as highlighting the important saety aspects to their usage as hose assemblies in the eld.

Working Pressure Hose and tting selection must be made so that the published maximum recommended working pressure o the Hose and tting are equal to, or greater than the maximum system pressure. Proof Pressure Test This test is typically carried out on customer request according to a method dened by the ISO 1402 standard. The test should be made at normal ambient temperature with a proo test bench using water or another suitable liquid. The hose assembly should be pressurised or between 30 to 60 seconds at twice the working pressure o the hose assembly. assembly. There should be no leakage or pressure drop. Hose and Fittings Storage A system o age control should be maintained to ensure that hose is used beore its shel lie has expired. Shel lie is the period o time when it is reasonable to expect the hose to retain ull capabilities or rendering the intended service. Hose shall be stored in a manner that acilitates age control and rst-in, rst-out (FIFO) usage based on the manuacturing date on the hose or hose assembly. The shel lie period o rubber hose in bulk orm or hose made rom two or more materials (hose assembly) is dicult to dene as so many actors can detrimentally infuence the hoses suitability or use. In the German speaking countries the “rules” that must be ollowed are stated in the DIN 20066:2002-10 and reerred to by the general organisation o trade associations (Berusgenossenschat) in their actual publication ZH1/74 rom April 2005 – saety regulations or hydraulic hose assembies. Excerpt DIN 20066:2002-10: For the production o hose assemblies the hose (bulk hose) must be younger than 4 years according to the hoses date o manuacture. The service lie o a hose assembly, including any period o storage should not exceed 6 years; the period o storage should not exceed 2 o these 6 years. Additionally, the International Standard Organisation (ISO) has prepared a drat version o a guideline or hose/hose assembly usage that diers slightly rom the German guideline. The ISO/TR 17165-2 states that the shel lie o hose as bulk hose or as hose made o 2 or more materials should not exceed 40 quarters (10 years) rom the date o manuacture o the hose i stored in accordance with ISO 2230. Ater all cases o hose storage, i visual inspection gives rise to any doubts as to the unctionality o the hose (cracks in the cover, rust etc), pressure testing should be carried out beore use or the hose should be disposed o. Hose assemblies should always be considered as saety relevant components, so no risks should be taken. Hose tting’s pressure rating This is a subject oten neglected by both designers and producers o hose assemblies alike. The pressure rating o a hose assembly is determined by the pressure rating o the component in the hose assembly with the lowest working pressure. Considering thereore only the pressure rating o the hose is NOT NOT enough! 6 Hose Fittings Hose ends, or hose ttings as commonly named, tend to be specied by the machine port that the hose is to be attached to and are heavily infuenced by the country o origin. Despite many eorts being made to standardise and rationalise connection types, many connection systems still exist due to national or international standards or even specic to a customer or a market segment. In general there are ve main ttings systems generally used or hydraulic connections today, today, whereby the overall list is much longer. European Thread Types:

Cutting and hose length

Hose is cut to the desired length according to specications. The correct hose cutting tool ensures a square, clean cut without damaging the pressure reinorcement. Depending on the hose type, dierent kinds o blades must be used: 1) smooth blade, 2) scolloped blade

All male threads are measured up to the end o the tting.

US ttings (JIC, SAE, NPSM), except ORFS ttings, are measured up to the end o the nut.

Crimping

Crimping is the saest, astest and most commonly used method o making a hose assembly. The Parker crimping systems ensure precise, leak-ree and tear-proo assembly o hose and tting. Reaching the exact crimping diameter is possible with Parkrimp crimping tools or reely adjustable crimping tools. When crimping, it is essential that hose, tting and crimping tool (dies) match precisely (see Parker crimping tables on pages Ed-1 -Ed-10). Furthermore, the insertion depth, a square cut hose, correct, burr-ree and clean crimping are important to ensure a correctly ormed and leak-ree connection o hose and tting. Using the ParKrimp hose crimpers or ree adjustable crimpers, the tting is crimped onto the hose in one slow and smooth crimping procedure. A depth stop with automatic unction ensures sae positioning o the tting. This guarantees the correct crimping o hydraulic hose assemblies. 26, 46, 48, 70, 71, 73, 78, 79, S6 series: Push the hose all the way into the coupling. Place the hose next to the tting shell and mark the insertion depth or the length o the tting onto the hose – (lubricate hose end i necessary) push hose into the tting until the mark on the hose is even with the end o the shell. Angle setting The displacement angle o a hose assembly is indicated only when two elbow ttings are assembled in a displaced way. The angle always has to be indicated clockwise looking rom the elbow tting at the back to the one in the ront. Please also consider the natural bending o the hose.

8 Routing / Installation / Environmental Environmental Inuences wrong

The routing o the hose assembly and the environment in which the hose assembly operates directly infuence the service lie o the hose assembly. The ollowing diagrams indicate the correct routing o hose assemblies that will maximise its service lie and assure a sae working unctionality.

When hose installation is straight, it must be assured that there is enough slack in the hose to allow or changes in length that occur when pressure is applied. When pressurized, hose that is too short may pull loose rom its hose ttings or stress the hose tting connections, causing premature metallic or seal ailures.

Correct clamping (holding/supporting) o the hose should be exercised to securely route the hose or to avoid the hose contacting suraces that will cause the hose damage. It is however, vital that the hose be allowed to keep its unctionality as a “fexible-pipe” and not be restricted rom changing in length when under pressure. It should also be noted that hoses or high- and low-pressure lines shall not be crossed or clamped together, as the dierence in changes in length could wear the hose covers. Hose should not be bent in more than one plane. I hose ollows a compound bend, it shall be coupled into separate segments or clamped into segments that each fex in only one plane.

Abrasive infuences In general care should be taken that the hose is not exposed to direct surace contact that will cause abrasive wearing o the outer cover (either hose to object or hose to hose contact). I however, the application is such that this cannot be avoided, either a hose with a higher abrasion resistant hose cover or a protective sleeve need to be used. Parker (TC) or (ST) covers oer 80 times or respectively 1000 times the abrasion resistance o standard rubber covers.
