SOIL INVESTIGATION PROJECT OF PULANG PISAU POWER PLANT CHINA NATIONAL HEAVY HEA VY MACHINERY MACHINERY CORPORATION ( CHMC CHMC )

INTRODUCTION Based on agreement in MoU between China National Heavy Machinery Corporation ( CHMC ) and PT. KALIMANTAN SOIL ENGINEERING (KSE), both parties were agreed to conduct a cooperation in soil investigation activity as below

4 (four) deep boring points with 3 (three) point @ 65 m and 1 (one) point with 30 m

16 (sixteen) cylinders of Undisturb Sampling

B. Laboratory Laboratory Work Laboratory test, each has 8 (eight) kinds to test : Water Content, Unit Weight, Spesific Gravity, Grain Size Analysis, Liquid Limit and Plastic Limit, Direct Shear, Unconfined Compressive Strength, Consolidation.

FIELD WORK Core Drilling and Standart Penetration Test (SPT) Drilling was to get undisturb and disturb sample as well as to find out the profile/stratigraphy of soil layer and the value of SPT reached 50. The SPT was meant to find out the hardness of every soil layer which correlated with number of hit for every 12-inch penetration (counted at the last 2 x 6 inch). SPT General Correlation

In general, result of laboratory test for the sample showed that the soil had low bearing capacity, which indicated by the soil’s small volume weight, high water content, low pas and 100 percent passed No.200 sieve. 3

DESIGN RECOMMENDATION

From the analysis on types of soil layer and result of SPT test for each soil layer, it can be concluded that soil at the depth at 0,00 m to ± 25,00 m was very soft and soft. From the depth of 25,00 m to 45,00 m the soil was sand layer with loose to dense/very dense. From 45,00 m to 65,00 m deep there was layer from medium to very stiff category and very hard coal/balck organic was found. Layers with SPT > 50 was average found at the depth of 60,00 m. From the condition of soil layers and the density/hardness, for primary building the foundation construction it is recommended to use pile foundation. For the depth or length of embedded pile the alternatives are: 1.

Alternative 1 : With foundation depth of 35 m. This foundation depth is taken since this layer is a sand layer with medium density. However, the bearing capacity is in low/poor category.

2.

Alternative 2 : With foundation depth at 50,0 m. This foundation depth is taken since this is a clay layer with medium to very stiff density category and the bearing capacity is fairly high.

To use pile up to 60,00 m, deep will require a large amount of money, and will create some difficulty in the implementation. Moreever, there is possibility that the pile can not be embedded up to 60,00 m. For secondary building, using concrete of minipile with dimension of 20 x 20 or 28 x 28 x 28, the calculation of bearing capacity using CPT result.

CONCLUSION Based on the result of soil investigation done : -

Surface soil of to 25,00 m deep is cohesive soil which has very low soil bearing capacity.

-

Very stiff/hard soil is relatively deep, from 50,00 m to 60,00 m.

-

For primary building the foundation conctruction it is recommended to use concrete of pile.

-

The depth of foundation embedded or the length of pile can be 35,00 m 0r 50,00 m

-

For secondary building the foundation conctruction it is recommended to use concrete of minipile.
