INTRODUCTION This dictionary of 'basic Tamil' has been compiled primarily for English speaking persons who are learning Tamil - though it is hoped that others may find it useful, too. The Tamil vocabulary here is approximately two thousand words. The selection of this vocabulary has been influenced by the Voice of America's 'Special English' one-thousand-word list. The Tamil vocabulary is given both in the Tamil script and in transliteration. The method of transHteration used is a modification of the system used in the Tamil Lexicon (University of Madras). The following table gives the letters which are 'initial' vowels (i.e., vowels which begin a word):

Hi
. The Initial Vowels
The consonant letters a, #, L_, ^, u, and p are pronounced differently in different positions in a word. At the beginning of words, the first five of these letters are pronounced roughly as k in '/dn'; as s in '^in'; as t in 'rin'; as th in 'fMn' (but as a pure plosive, with no air escaping past the tongue at the start of the word); and as p in 'pin'. The consonant p (r) never begins a word.
^ =a (the short a, as in 'among') ^ - a (the long a, as in 'alms') = i (the short i, as in 'in') fF -1 (the long I, as in 'machine') a- -u (the short K, as in 'pat') s§s = u (the long ii, as in 'rwby' or 'Zulu') 67 = e (the short e, as in 'etiquette') 67 = e (the long e, as in 'etude') g = ai (a diphthong, as ai in 'aisle') 9 = 0 (theshort, clipped o, as in'opaque') g = 0 (the long d, as in 'owe') s^srr - an (a diphthong, as ou in 'owch')
When doubled within words, the first five of these letters, with the exception of 93= (echo), are pronounced similarly. The exception, (echo) as in ^s^ffSLD {acchagam), is pronounced approximately as the ch m 'cAum'. As transliterated in this dictionary, (rra) as in wpip (marra) is pronounced approximately as tra in the word 'tradition' (the r sound is rolled).

Intervocalically, that is, with vowels in front and back of any one of these consonant letters (e.g., «in ^xLD [agam]): -ffi- is pronounced as a fricative g; -3=-is pronounced as s in '.jin'; - iL- is pronounced as dm 'ma
When directly preceded by a nasal, these six letters («, L_, ^, u, and are voiced. E.g.: - fBJsi - = - figa - (s^a: - = - nja - ssarL- =
-
- nda
-
- = - ntha - = - mba - ekp - = - nra - (the nr is pronounced like the ndr in 'unrfress', with the r slightly rolled) With two exceptions, the rest of the letters (which are semi-vowels) are relatively straightforward in their pronunciation: lu (y) as in 'y&s' 0- (r), a rolled r GO (Z) as in 'Zevel' sij (v) as in 'very' The two exceptions are: (£), a fricative, retroflexive I quite peculiar to Tamil and some other Dravidian languages sfr (Z), a retroflexive I - LDU
vii
Finally, there are in general usage six letters borrowed from the Sanskrit Grantha alphabet
The complete Tamil alphabet, in proper order, together with the transliterated sounds associated with each letter, is given as follows:

I wish to thank ITuru M . Lakshmanan, of Serkkadu, Walajabad, who read through several rough drafts of this dictionary and made helpful comments. I also wish to thank Mr. S. Ramakrishnan for his assistance and Mrs. Usha Krishna for going through the original final draft and carefully checking the entries. Any anomalies are entirely my responsibility. I have sometimes deliberately departed from strict alphabetical order for word-family grouping reasons.
