Using a Spring Spring hang hanger er in your Stres Str esss Package..H Package..Here ere are thee q u es th estt ion ionss y o u should sh ould able to an to answer swer before usin using g it… 1. What is the main differenc differenc e betwe en Constant and V ari ariab able le Spr ing Hang er er?? When to use the se h ang anger er s? A ns: ns: In Constant Spring hanger the load remains constant throughout its travel range. But But In variable Spring Spring hanger the load v aries with displacement. displacement. Spring hangers are used when thermal displacements are upwards and piping system is lifted off from the support position. Variable spring hanger is preferable as this is less costly. Constant springs are used: a) When When thermal displacement displacement ex ceeds 5 0 mm b) When Whe n v ari ariab abilit ility y ex ce eds 25 % c) Sometimes when piping is connected to strain sensitive equipment like steam turbines, centrifugal compressors etc and it becomes v ery dif diffi ficult cult to qualify nozzle loads by variable spring hangers, constant spring hangers hangers can be used. 2. What What do y ou mean by variability? What What is the industry approv ed limit limit for v ariabi ariability? lity? A ns: V ari ariab abilit ility y = (Hot Loa d-Co d-Cold ld lo ad)/ Hot lo ad= Sprin Spring g Consta Con sta nt* dis displa place ce men t/ Hot loa l oa d.
Limit for variability for variable spring hangers is 25%. 3. What are the major parameters you must address while making a Spring Datasheet? A ns: Majo r pa ramet er s ar e: Spr ing TA G, Cold load/ Insta lled lo ad, V ertic al and h or izo ntal mo v ement , Piping design temperature, Piping Material, Insulation thickness, Hydrotest load, Line number etc .
5. How to calculate the height o f a Variable Spring hanger? A ns: Selec t th e he ight from v end or ca tal og ue b ase d o n spring size and stiffness cl ass . For base mounted v ariable spring hanger the height is mentioned directly. It is the spring height. For top mo unted variable spring hangers ass spring height with turnbuckle length, clamp/lug length and rod length. 6. Can you select a proper Spring hanger if you do not make it program defined in your software? What is the procedure? A ns: I n y ou r sy ste m firs t de cide the lo ca tio n where y ou want to insta ll the spr ing. Then re mov e al l nearby supports which are not taking load in thermal operating case. Now run the program and the sustained load on that support node is your ho t load. The thermal mov ement in that location is yo ur thermal movement for yo ur spring. Now assume a variability for y our spring. So calculate Spring constant=Hot load*variability/displacement. Now with spring constant and hot load enter any v endor catalogue to select spring inside the trav el range. 7 . Why ho rizontal displaceme nt is spec ified in datasheet? What will you do if the angle due to displacement is more than 4 degree? A ns: Fo r bot to m mo unt ed s prings it is men tio ned to av oid lar ge s pring b end ing b y fric tio nal fo rc e an d displacement. So that additional measures can be taken to lower frictional force by prov iding PTFE/graphite slide plate . For top mo unted spring hangers horizontal displacement is mentioned to c heck angularity of 4 degree to reduce transmission of horizontal force to piping systems as spring hangers are designed to take the v ertical load only. If angle becomes more than 4 degree due to large horizontal movement then install the spring hanger in a offset position so that after movement the angle beco mes less than 4 degree. 8. Which spring will you select for your system: Spring with low stiffness or higher stiffness and why?
A ns: Spr ings with lo wer stiffness prov ides le ss loa d v ariation for sam e trav el. So this s pring is a be tter ch oic e than a spring hanger with higher st iffness.
