RESUMEN El análisis granulométrico sirve para determinar la distribución de partículas de un suelo, que está representado en una gráfica denominada curva granulométrica, en la que se puede apreciar de manera esquemática la repartición y el tamaño de las partículas que componen un suelo. En este sentido, diversos métodos son aplicados para obtener
la distribución
granulométrica. Para este ensayo, se utilizó la metodología del análisis mecánico, en el cual se emplearon tamices o mallas en una muestra de suelo afirmado. El suelo fue dividido primeramente en la parte fina y la parte gruesa, que fueron evaluadas por separado con su respectiva serie de tamices; tanto para la parte fina como para la parte gruesa, se procedió a pasar el suelo en los tamices ordenados de mayor menor, pensando el retenido en cada malla. La curva granulométrica en escala semilogarítmica se obtuvo de todo el agregado en conjunto, con la corrección respectiva, en base a las aberturas de cada tamiz y su respectivo porcentaje pasante. Se obtuvo en la curva valores representativos de decil diez (D10) correspondiente a 0.1062 mm, decil treinta (D30) correspondiente a 0.4086 mm, y decil sesenta (D60) correspondiente a 3.8661 mm., además de coeficientes de uniformidad y curvatura de 36.404 y 0.044 respectivamente. El porcentaje de error hallado al realizar dicha corrección fue de 0.86% para el suelo fino y de 0.13% para el suelo grueso. Finalmente, en la clasificación SUCS del suelo, este resultó ser una arena mal graduada con finos (SP). Dado que se obtuvieron los valores del índice de plasticidad y el índice de plasticidad de Casagrande, la parte de arena con finos quedó sin evaluar.

1. INTRODUCCIÓN El conocimiento de la composición granulométrica de un suelo sirve para discernir sobre la influencia que puede tener en la densidad del material compactado. En los comienzos de la investigación de las propiedades de los suelos, se creyó que las propiedades mecánicas dependían directamente de la distribución de las partículas constituyentes según sus tamaños; por ello era importante la búsqueda de métodos adecuados para obtener tal distribución. Conocer el tamaño de las partículas es de vital importancia en la ingeniería civil y la geotecnia, ya que permite determinar algunos comportamientos o inclusive la misma composición del suelo; por ejemplo, la escala de diámetros de la clasificación SUCS para diferenciar grava, arena, limo y arcilla según su diámetro. También es importante para determinar el nivel de vacíos de un suelo acuerdo a su gradación, y si es útil o no en los procesos constructivos, especialmente en pavimentos. Una parte importante de los criterios de aceptabilidad de suelos para carreteras, aeropistas, prensas de tierra y otro tipo de terraplanes es el análisis granulométrico; por lo que la información obtenida por análisis granulométrico puede utilizarse para predecir movimientos del agua a través del suelo, la susceptibilidad a sufrir la acción de las heladas, etc.

Suelos: Principales tipos Para conocer la composición de un suelo, es necesario definir
primeramente el concepto con el que vamos a tratar. Braja M. Das (1984) explica que el suelo es el agregado no cementado de granos minerales y materia orgánica descompuesta (partículas sólidas) junto con el líquido y gas que ocupan los espacios vacíos entre las partículas sólidas. Carlos Crespo Villalaz (2004) explica que el suelo es una delgada capa sobre la corteza terrestre de material que proviene de la desintegración y/o alteración física y/o química de las rocas y de los residuos de las actividades de los seres vivos que sobre ella se asientan. En este sentido, las alteraciones en las rocas pueden ser un proceso químico o un proceso físico, según los agentes que actúan en ellas. Estos procesos se constituyen la meteorización y alteración de las rocas, que da lugar a distintas formas de desintegración, y por consiguiente, distintos tamaños de partículas en los suelos resultantes.

b. Arenas La arena es un material no cohesivo ni plástico de granos finos procedentes de la descomposición natural o trituración artificial de las rocas. Suele encontrarse en el mismo depósito que las gravas; la arena de río contiene proporciones grandes de grava y arcilla. Son menos compresibles que la arcilla, y si se aplica una cara en su superficie se comprimen de manera inmediata. En su mineralogía, se encuentran fracciones principalmente de cuarzo, feldespato y en ocasiones de otros minerales.
c. Limos Los limos son suelos de granos finos con poca o ninguna plasticidad, cuyo color varía de gris claro a muy oscuro. Se clasifican en limo inorgánico, como el producido en canteras; y limo orgánico, que suele encontrarse en los ríos, es de características plásticas, permeabilidad baja y compresibilidad muy alta. Son considerados como suelos pobres para cimentar si no se encuentran en un estado denso. En su mineralogía, se encuentran granos muy finos de cuarzo, y algunas partículas de minerales micáceos en forma de escamas.

El comportamiento mecánico e hidráulico de suelos gruesos está principalmente definido por el tamaño y compacidad de sus granos, que puede ser determinado por lo que únicamente en suelos gruesos la distribución por tamaños puede revelar algo referente a las propiedades físicas del material; así, por ejemplo, los suelos bien graduados (con una amplia gama de tamaños) tienen un comportamiento más favorable que los suelos de granulometría muy uniforme. En cambio, el comportamiento de suelos finos depende de su estructuración e historia geológica, no tanto del tamaño de sus partículas, por lo que el análisis granulométrico no resulta tan útil; aun así, es necesario informarse sobre la distribución granulométrica del suelo fino con el que se trabaja. Dependiendo, entonces, si es un suelo grueso o fino, para el conocimiento de la composición granulométrica de un determinado suelo existen diferentes procedimientos: En suelos con partículas gruesas, el procedimiento más conveniente es el tamizado o cribado. En suelos con más granos finos, es más preciso utilizar procedimientos por sedimentación, como el análisis hidrométrico, ya que al aumentar la finura de los granos el tamizado se hace más difícil.
