B1 Specification requirements for piling and embedded retaining walls B1.2 Project Specification (a) Role of the Engineer The role of the Engineer shall be undertaken by the Contract Administrator. For the purposes of this document the term ‘Main Contractor’ shall apply to the principle design and build contractor appointed for the construction of the project. The term ‘Contractor’ shall apply to the sub-contractor(s) appointed by the Main Contractor to undertake the piling works.
(b) Location and description of the site Refer to Main Contract documents. A description of the site and its ground conditions are included in the following documents and other site data: •
Geotechnical Engineering Limited (GEL). Phase 1 Geo-Environmental Desk Study, Pride Park, Derby, for the proposed Outdoor Sports Hub (Multi-sports Arena). GEL Report No. 25759/01, dated 5 August 2011.
•
Geotechnical Engineering Limited (GEL). Derby Multi-sports Arena, Factual Report on Ground Investigation.
In summary, the site is a former landfill which sits on River Terrace Deposits which form a Secondary A Aquifer. At depth, the solid geology consists of the Mercia Mudstone which is designated as a Secondary B aquifer. The River Derwent flows immediately to the south and east of the site. A bentonite cut-off wall was constructed in the 1990’s to prevent migration of contaminated groundwater from Pride Park into the River Derwent. It is reported that radioactive waste was deposited between 1961 and 1966, in trenches, in advance of the landfill waste fill front. The majority of the radioactive waste reportedly consisted of materials slightly contaminated with Uranium, emitting alpha radiation; a relatively non-penetrating form of radiation. The Geotechnical Engineering Desk Study reports that an investigation in 1993, undertaken by Sir Owen Williams & Partners failed to find any radioactive materials. It is understood that the recent ground investigation by GEL also failed to identify any radioactive materials.
(c) Nature of the works The Works comprise the design and construction of piles through the landfill to support the whole of the building and ground floor slab. The Tender stage drawings are based on approximately 650 No. Piles with an assumed indicative capacity of 750kN and an assumed diameter of 450mm. The design of the piles and the selection of piling system, load capacity and pile arrangement shall be the responsibility of the Contractor. This specification allows for a range of pile

types. However, the Contractor is free to propose any pile type but must provide full justification for the selection of his chosen option with the tender return. The Contractor will need to consider the impact of negative skin friction. The design and construction of the piles must take full account of all necessary measures to prevent pollution of controlled waters (refer to the Environment Agency guidance “Piling and penetrative ground improvement, methods on land affected by contamination: a guidance on pollution prevention”, National Groundwater and Contaminated land Centre Report NC/99/73, Dated 2001. The Contractor shall ensure that the pile design and construction fully complied with the requirements of the Local Planning Authority and the Planning Conditions, and provide method statements and works proposals as required to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of all stakeholders to the planning process. The Contractor shall provide a tender design with his tender return.
(d) Working area Refer to Main Contract documents.
(e) Sequence of the works and other works proceeding at the same time Refer to Main Contract documents.
