SCOPE & DEFINITIONS 1.1

Scope

This specification covers the minimum technical requirements for the design, fabrication, installation, and inspection of the external insulating materials for hot surfaces on piping, and equipment (vessels, heat exchangers, tanks, pumps,etc). using conventional types of insulation such as ceramic fiber, mineral wool, calcium silicate or expanded perlite. Hot piping and equipment shall be insulated to conserve heat, protect personnel, and maintain temperature for process control. This specification does not include polyurethane foam insulation, the insulation of cold piping and equipment operating at temperatures below ambient, nor the insulation of fired heaters and buildings. Also, this specification does not include the specification of the removable thermal insulation covers. 1.2

1.3

Site Conditions

1.2.1

All equipment shall be designed and constructed to be suitable for outdoor service in a corrosive environment located at Jose Petrochemical Complex in the State of Anzoategui on the northern coast of Venezuela, 226 km east of Caracas and 27 km west of Puerto la Cruz.

1.2.2

The equipment will be installed outdoors, unprotected, and mounted on a concrete foundation.

1.2.3

Contractor shall take into account the site specific meteorology, climatology, air quality and personnel safety when designing this equipment. Contractor shall refer to Basic Engineering Design Data (BEDD) JOP00-0000-DS-SPC-00001 for all applicable environmental data.

Piping, vessels, and equipment adjacent to platforms or other operating areas, that are operating at or above 60 °C (140 °F) and do not require heat conservation insulation, shall be insulated for personnel protection, except in non-congested areas where expanded-metal guards can be installed. The insulation shall be installed only on that portion which personnel might come in contact with while performing their normal duties. This shall include those areas of piping and equipment that are less than 2134 mm (7 feet) above either finished grade or a working platform, or within 914 mm (3 feet) horizontally of stairs, ladders, or working platforms. 3.1.3

Process Stability The primary consideration for using process stability insulation shall be to control the process temperature, including impact because of sudden changes in ambient conditions. Design of process stability insulation shall be based on required process temperature and annual extremes in ambient conditions. In cases where maintaining the process temperature between source equipment (e.g., regeneration heaters) and destination equipment (e.g., treatment beds) is critical, the insulation requirements, particularly for the interconnecting piping, shall be based on the exit temperature of the process fluid from the source equipment, and an allowable temperature drop as specified in the source equipment datasheet. In the absence of a defined allowable temperature drop, the insulation requirements shall be based on a temperature drop of no more than 28°C (82°F). Thickness of process stability insulation for piping, vessels, and equipment shall be determined by the EPC contractor for all applicable cases.

3.1.4

Thickness of insulation (not including process stability insulation, PS) for piping and equipment shall be determined by reference to fluid operating temperatures and to the appropriate insulation thickness shown on Table IA, Table IB, Table IIA or Table

Insulation a.) All insulation materials shall be asbestos-free. There shall be an indelible color indicator on the insulation that identifies it as asbestos-free, to permit workers on subsequent repairs to readily identify it as being asbestos-free. b.) All materials shall be new and certified by the contractor to conform to requirements contained in the manufacturer's published data. c.) Insulation material for all applications shall be capable of meeting ASTM C795 for leachable chloride ion content. All mastics, cements, and other material used with insulation for austenitic stainless steels shall contain less than 50-ppm leachable chlorides. d.) Insulation materials shall be used only within the temperature limits specified below. e.) Insulation for piping, exchangers, horizontal equipment, vertical vessels less than 2.4 meters (8 feet) outside diameter and all vertical vessel heads shall be as follows: For operating temperatures from 121°C (250°F) up to 580°C (1075°F): Calcium Silicate in accordance with ASTM C-533, Type II shall be used. Weatherproofing Metal Jacket material shall be aluminum in accordance with ASTM Specification B209, Type 3003-H14 or H16 or 5005-H14 or H16 alloy temper for operating temperature 580°C (1075°F) and below. Aluminum sheets shall have corrosion/moisture barrier of 40–pound paper and 25.4 microns (1 mil) polyethylene. b.) Preformed aluminum weather jacket for pipe elbows shall be 0.024 inch thick 1100-0 aluminum temper alloy, and coated with corrosion/moisture barrier. c.) Stainless steel shall be used where fire-resistant weather jacket is specified. d.) Jackets for operating temperatures from 581°C (1076°F) to 927°C (1700°F) shall be stainless steel e.) Mastic weathercoating shall be used only where metal weatherjacketing is not feasible and within the limitations noted in Section 3.5. Emulsion-type mastic coatings shall be used. Solvent-base mastic coatings shall be used only with written approval of the Company, and shall be considered only when weather conditions at the time of application would not permit satisfactory curing of emulsion-type materials. 3.2.5

Weather Jacket Attachment Fixtures a.) Fixtures shall be stainless steel, except that sheet metal screws, pop rivets and stud caps may be aluminum (0.40% maximum Cu). Stainless steel sheet metal screws, pop rivets and stud caps shall be used in fire hazard areas. General Installation Requirements

3.3.1

Condition of Surfaces to be insulated a.) All surfaces to be insulated shall be clean and dry. b.) Field welds shall be left unpainted and un-insulated until hydrostatic testing is completed. Insulation that becomes wet must be replaced. Any steam tracing shall be installed before insulation. c.) No insulation shall be installed until completion of any stress-relieving and chemical cleaning. Installation of insulation shall be after hydrostatic test inspection and released in writing.

3.3.2

Insulating Cement All voids (not straight through voids) and cracks in insulation shall be filled with insulating cement. Insulating cement shall not be used with mineral fiber.

3.3.3

Valve Bodies, Flanges, and Manways a.) Nozzles and valve bodies shall be insulated with the pipe flanges. b.) Flanges for heat exchangers, piping, and manways shall be insulated per Table III. c.) Flexible, reusable insulation covers, shall be provided as defined in project specification JOP00-0000-ME-SPC-0082, Installation of Removable Thermal Insulation Covers. d.) Permanent insulation shall be used for screwed and welded fittings/valves.

3.3.4

Multi-Layer Insulation For metal temperatures above 343°C (650°F), double-layer insulation shall be used, except on piping 38 mm (1–1/2 inch) and smaller. Regardless of temperature, for insulation thickness greater than 76 mm (3 inch), multi-layer insulation shall be used in accordance the thickness as follows:

Weatherjacketing a.) Piping and equipment shall be weatherjacketed with either an aluminum, or stainless steel jacket, except as indicated in (b) and (c) below. b.) Mastic weathercoat may be used on surfaces of complex shapes, where not prohibited by (c) below. It shall be used only on calcium silicate and perlite insulation and where the surface temperature of the insulation will not exceed 83 °C (180 °F). Emulsion-type weathercoating shall not be applied when atmospheric precipitation or condensation may wet the finished surface within 24 hours after application. 1.) Mastic weathercoat shall be constructed as follows: Apply a layer of finishing cement over the insulation to provide a smooth, even surface. Apply mastic to 3 mm (1/8 inch) wet thickness. While still wet, wrap with glass fabric. Lap joints 51 mm (2 inches). Apply finish coat of mastic to completely cover fabric. The total dry film thickness shall be a minimum of 3 mm (1/8 inch). 2.) On large fittings and equipment (insulation OD greater than 305 mm (12 inch) or vessel heads, use poultry mesh in place of glass fabric. Poultry mesh shall be laced with wire and stapled to the insulation prior to the final coat of mastic. c.) Within 7.6 meters (25 feet) of fired heaters, weather jacketing shall be stainless steel and insulation shall be expanded perlite or ceramic fiber as applicable. Flammable weathercoating shall not be used.

Insulation Requirements

4.2.1

Insulation shall be calcium silicate, expanded perlite or ceramic fiber. Materials shall be furnished in preformed pipe or block insulation. Mineral wool insulation shall be used only where specified by the Company.4.2.2 Piping insulation, 305 mm (12 inch) outside diameter and less shall be secured with 16-gage type 304 stainless steel tie wire. On multi-layer insulation or where insulation outside diameter exceeds 305 mm (12 inch), the outer layer shall be secured with 12.7 mm x 0.38 mm (1/2 inch x 0.015-inch) stainless steel straps instead of wire.

4.2.3

Insulation shall be secured on 305 mm (12 inch) centers.

4.2.4

Longitudinal joints of single-layer insulation and longitudinal and circumferential joints of double-layer insulation shall be staggered (i.e., adjacent joints shall not align).

4.2.5

Insulation supports for vertical piping shall be the bolt-on clamp type fabricated from carbon steel for service below 426 °C (800 °F) operating temperature. The clamps shall be the same material as the piping for operating temperatures above 426 °C (800 °F). Insulation on vertical piping shall have ring supports installed at the bottom of the pipe run and above interruptions in the pipe run, such as at flanges and valves. Structural supports for piping shall be designed to maintain vapor barrier and weather barrier integrity of the insulation systems despite large thermal expansions and contractions of the piping.

Weather Jacket Requirements

4.3.1

Aluminum weather jacket shall be 0.4 mm (0.016 inch) cross-crimped 5 mm (3/16 inch) pitch, except for pipe elbows. Elbows shall be weather-jacketed with 0.6 mm (0.024 inch), smooth, preformed aluminum segments and fastened with #8 x 12 mm (1/2 inch) stainless screws on 229 mm (9 inch) centers. Use aluminum with the limitations of Section 3.2.4 and 3.3.5.

4.3.2

Weather jacket shall be overlapped 51 mm (2 inch) longitudinally and circumferentially. Longitudinal joints shall be staggered between the three o'clock and nine o'clock positions. Longitudinal seams on aluminum jacket shall have a 7 mm (1/4 inch) rolled hem.

4.3.3

Use end caps wherever insulation terminates.

4.3.4

Joints in weather jackets shall be caulked with sealant.

4.3.5

Weather jackets on vertical piping shall have S-clips to maintain it in position. Lines up to 18 inch in diameter shall have two S-clips spaced 180 degrees apart. Lines 18 inch to 28 inch shall have four S-clips 90 degrees apart. Lines 30 inch to 48 inch

Insulation Requirements

5.2.1

Heat exchanger shells less than 914 mm (36 inch) in outside diameter shall be insulated in the same manner as piping. See Section 4.0. All other vessels, columns and heat exchangers shall be insulated according to Section 5.2 and Section 5.3.

5.2.2

Shells of vertical vessels larger than 2.4 meters (8 feet) and operating above 121°C (250°F) shall be insulated with mineral wool. Calcium silicate, expanded perlite or ceramic fiber insulation shall be used for the top and bottom heads of vertical vessels. All other equipment surfaces shall be insulated with calcium silicate, expanded perlite or ceramic fiber insulation unless noted otherwise on the drawing. Vessels which are less than 2.4 meters (8 feet) in outside diameter and which will operate at 581°C (1076°F) to 927°C (1700°F) shall be insulated utilizing ceramic fiber.

5.2.3

Insulation supports for equipment shall be fabricated from materials of the same composition as the equipment and furnished with the item in accordance with Process Industry Practices Insulation PIP INIH1000, Hot insulation Installation Support Details. Supports shall not be attached after post-weld heat treatment or stress relieve. Block insulation shall be secured with 19 mm x 0.5 mm (3/4 inch x 0.020 inch) stainless steel straps on 305 mm (12 inch) centers. Each strap shall have one buckle per connection.

5.2.4

Circumferential joints shall be staggered on single-layer insulation. Circumferential joints shall not align between layers of double-layer insulation.

5.2.5

When insulating vessel heads, insulation straps shall be attached to a support ring centered on the head. Straps shall be spaced a maximum of 152 mm (6 inch) around the ring, so that each block is well fastened. Intermediate rings may be necessary to prevent the straps from stacking. Straps shall not be carried completely around the vessel head.

5.3.2

Weather jacket shall be secured with 19 mm x 0.5 mm (3/4 inch x 0.020 inch) stainless steel straps (N334) on 305 mm (12 inch) maximum centers.

5.3.3

The circumferential and longitudinal laps in the weather jacket shall be a minimum of 76 mm (3 inch) when using the cross-crimp corrugated or flat sheet. The lap in the 32 mm (1–1/4 inch) pitch corrugated sheet shall be two corrugations.

5.3.4

On vertical equipment, the circumferential lap of the weather jacket shall be supported by S-clips. Each sheet shall have at least one clip in the center of the sheet and one at the vertical lap. In addition, vertical laps shall be secured with pop rivets on 152 mm (6 inch) centers. However, at least two vertical laps 180 degrees apart shall not be riveted to allow for thermal expansion.

5.3.5

On vertical equipment, all straps shall be supported by J-clips on 1.4 m (4.5 feet) centers, except straps located at the circumferential laps. Circumferential lap straps shall be supported by S-clips located per Section 5.3.4.

5.3.6

On equipment 3.7 meters (12 feet) outside diameter and greater operating above 426 C (800°F) or 5.5 meters (18 feet) outside diameter and greater operating above 315 C (600°F), weather jacket straps shall have an expansion unit every 15 meters (50 feet), but no fewer than one unit.

5.3.7

On horizontal vessels, the longitudinal lap shall be supported with S-clips on 305 mm (12 inch) centers. Circumferential laps shall be pop riveted on 152 mm (6 inch) centers.

5.3.8

Aluminum weather jacket for exposed heads shall be "gore and crown" with laps "beaded and crimped". Gores shall be overlapped a minimum of 76 mm (3 inch). All laps shall be secured with pop rivets on 102 mm (4 inch) centers and caulked with sealant.

5.3.9

When bottom head of vessel is fully enclosed by skirt (unexposed head), insulation shall be weathercoated with 6.3 mm (1/4 inch) wet thickness hydraulic insulating

Protection of Mechanical Equipment

Working parts of turbines and other mechanical equipment shall be protected when insulation is applied. Until all insulation materials, including cement or mastic, have been removed from these parts, the scope of insulation work shall be considered incomplete.

7.0

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS FOR TANKS 7.1

Shell Insulation

7.1.1

Insulation shall be specified either the laybar or impalement system.

7.1.2

Laybar System - prior to weatherjacketing, the insulation blocks shall be secured to the tank with stainless steel bands fastened to the inner laybar. The weather jacket shall be impaled on the laybar studs in the crown of a corrugation and shall extend under the laybar a minimum of one corrugation. Vertical seams in the weather jacket shall be secured with screws or pop rivets on 9-inch maximum centers. Two S-clips shall support each weather jacket sheet at each corner overlap and in the center between the overlaps.

7.1.3

Impalement System - prior to weatherjacketing, the insulation blocks shall be secured to the tank with cupped-head weld pins or 14 gage galvanized wire fastened to the impalement studs. The pins shall be spaced at a maximum of 24inch centers and with a minimum of 4 per insulation block. The weather jacket shall be impaled on studs with each vertical seam having at least 3 studs spaced a maximum of 48 inches apart. These studs shall be impaled through the crown of a corrugation. Each corner stud shall retain the four sheet layers caused by the sheet overlaps. The top and bottom weather jacket shall have studs within 6 inches of the edge. The vertical seams shall be secured with gasketed and self-tapping screws, spaced between studs and at a maximum spacing of 9 inches. Two S-clips shall be used to support each weather jacket sheet and shall be equally spaced between vertical overlaps.

7.1.4.4 All insulation penetrations such as manways, nozzles, structural members, etc. shall be flashed or sealed in order to prevent water leakage into the insulation. 7.1.4.5 Vertical seams in the weather jacket shall overlap a minimum of two corrugations. On horizontal seams the upper weather jacket sheet shall overlap the lower sheet by 4 inches minimum. 7.1.4.6 Stainless steel straps are required to support the weather jacket with the follows: Maximum vertical spacing between straps shall be 18 inches. Top and bottom straps shall be located no more than 6 inches from the edge of the weather jacket. J-clips shall be symmetrically spaced at a maximum of 9 feet apart to support the straps. All J-clips shall be installed with 2 pop rivets and with the hook facing the tank. An expansion unit shall be installed on each band segment between laybars. Maximum band length, without a break, shall be fifty feet. Two J-clips shall be used on each side of the spring unit. 7.1.4.7 Contractor shall flash as needed around valve handwheels in order to maintain a minimum 3-inch clearance between handwheel and tank shell. 7.1.4.8 Contractor shall provide flashing around any swing line cables which are closer than 3 inches to the tank shell. 7.1.4.9 Contractor shall attach aluminum weather jacket to angle on tanks with stairway treads welded to shell. 7.1.4.10 Ends of weather jacket straps shall be turned under on bottom six feet of insulation for protection of personnel. 7.1.4.11 All pop rivets and sheet metal screws shall be sealed.

7.2.4

General purpose mastic shall be applied over the fiberglass insulation to help secure the roof deck board. Mastic shall also be used to seal the joints between the roof deck boards.

7.2.5

Lip flashing shall be secured.

7.2.6

The roof deck board shall be installed with the prefelted primed side facing upwards and in a staggered or brick-like pattern to make joints discontinuous.

7.2.7 The two-coat, reinforced Belzona membrane or equivalent products shall be applied per manufacturer specifications with the following additions: 7.2.7.1 The roof deck board joints shall receive a stripe coat 4 inches wide (to 2 inches on either side of the joint). 7.2.7.2 The joint between the edge of the flashing and the Roof Deck board around the periphery of the tank roof shall be stripe coated. 7.2.7.3 The membrane coating, with reinforcement, shall extend to the edge of the roof deck at the tank periphery, over the flashing and down the edge 2 inches. 7.2.7.4 The reinforced Belzona membrane or equivalent products shall extend 2 inches along all penetrations through the membrane and insulation. The penetrations shall be made suitable for application of the membrane per manufacturer specifications.

INSPECTION Any purchase order awarded by the contractor shall contain the following clause: “Material on this order shall be subject to inspection and testing by a representative of company and contractor who shall be granted access to any and all parts of the plant(s) of all parties engaged in the manufacture or processing of this order. Any rejection by these representatives shall be final;

8.1.1

Contractor shall submit detailed installation procedures complete with detailed sketches showing methods of applying insulation, particularly for valves, flanges, fittings, contraction joints, vapor stops, and vapor barriers.

8.1.2

All materials used must be completely described as to manufacturer and type.

8.1.3

Contractor's procedures must describe how materials will be stored, handled, mixed, and used in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.

8.1.4

Contractor shall ensure site supervision uses the latest approved revisions of his procedures to control execution of the work. The procedures and revisions thereof must be submitted for the company’s review and approval prior to use.

Insulation Style: A. Insulate the flange joint using the same thickness as the pipe insulation. B. Insulate the flange joint using the same thickness as the pipe insulation. Use a flange spray shield in hydrocarbon service. C. Use Expanded Metal Mesh Guards Notes: (1) Flanges and studs must be designed with ASME Code. In sour service, medium strength level studs shall be in accordance with ASTM A 193 Grade B7M (tempered to <225 Brinnell Hardness) with ASTM A194 Grade 2HM nuts. (2) Insulate all flanges on insulated piping operating over 60°C (140°F), except in cooling water service. (3) Use always the appropriate nuts to match the stud material (see ASTM A-194).
