University of Malaya has its roots in Singapore with the establishment of King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1905. University Malaya was established in Singapore with the merger of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College. The growth of the University was very rapid during the first decade of its foundation and this resulted in the setting up of two autonomous Divisions, one located in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the government of the two indicated that the two divisions of the University of Malaya should become autonomous separate national universities, one located in Singapore (later becoming the National University of Singapore) and the other in Kuala Lumpur (retaining the name University of Malaya). Legislation was passed in 1961 and the University of Malaya was established in 1962.

Officials then officially converted the building to be used as the residence of the newly-created sovereign post of Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaya. In 2013, two guards in Malay traditional attire would be stationed at the main gateway of the old Istana Negara to revive the nostalgia and tradition of the Malay Sultanate. Information, Communications and Culture Minister Rais said "the practice will help retain the old palace as a must-visit tourist destination" . Several rooms and halls at the old Istana Negara will be open to visitors to learn of their use to the previous thirteen Kings who lived in the palace. The transportation is not difficult to find, Taxis are found in all large cities, and most have meters, although you can't always rely on the drivers to use them.In major cities there are also buses, which are extremely cheap and convenient once you figure out which one is going your way. Kuala Lumpur also has commuter trains, a Light Rail Transit (LRT) and a monorail system.
