DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF ANIMAL CRIMES SUBCOMMITTEE
The District Attorneys Association of the State of New York anno unced the formation of an Animal Crimes Subcommittee to bring together prosecutors from around the state who are dedicated to working on animal crimes and animal cruelty issues to help improve the investigation and prosecution of these cases. “For years many of our District Attorneys and Assistant District Attorneys who work on animal crimes have been emailing and having conversations about issues they encounter. We wanted to create a formal DAASNY committee to help these prosecutors have these conversations and be able to connect the expertise we have in offices all over the state,” said DAASNY President Albany County District Attorney David Soares. “Th e District Attorney’s Office is tasked with prosecuting offenders who violate the law, a nd in cases of animal abuse or hoarding, it is vital v ital to hold offenders accountable while also e nsuring these crimes are never repeated. Our goal go al is to make sure that we are a re employing best practices all over the state and prioritizing prevention strategies in every community and educating the public about what they can do to help.” The announcement was made at a workshop co-sponsored by DAASNY and the New York State Animal Protection Federation entitled Creating New Perspectives on Animal Cruelty held at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The day featured three different sessions for Shelter Professionals, Law Enforcement, District Attorneys, Animal Control Officers and Dog Control Officers. “It is imperative that district attorneys across the state take animal crimes seriously. Many times they are the gateway to more offensive crimes. We’ve worked closely with the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York over the past few years,” said Libby Post, Executive Director of the NYS Animal Protection Federation. “Establishing the legislative sub-committee on animal crimes is testament to the leadership of DA Soares and DAASNY’s commitment to animal crimes.” The co-chairs of the committee will be Jed Painter, Counsel to Nassau County District Attorney and Jennifer McCanney, Assistant Albany County District Attorney for Special Victims. The group will meet on a regular regu lar basis, discuss animal crimes issues and prosecutions, as well as review and comment on pending legislation related to animal crimes.
