Demand Economy While other manufacturers have adopted common rail fuel systems, Detroit has stayed ahead of the industry producing the only engines with an Amplified Common Rail Fuel System (ACRS).
Common Rail/PLV Injectors
Lines and Brackets
•
The ACRS delivers highest pressures only within the injector, limiting the stress on the fuel system components
•
The electronic injectors deliver the higher pressures necessary to increase fuel atomization lowering combustion temperature and improving thermodynamic efficiency
•
Also contributes to improved throttle response, while also helping reduce emissions and engine noise Marketing

Fuel Economy Benefits The DD15 is the fuel economy leader in the HD industry, following benefits will help the bottom line.
Engine Feature
Function / Attribute
Vehicle Benefit
Compression Ratio (18.4:1)
High compression ratios condense the oxygen and fuel molecules into a smaller space causing better mixing and evaporation of the fuel droplets improving engine thermodynamic efficiency.
A high compression ratio allows the engine to extract more mechanical energy per stroke. As a result, there is increased power and more useful work at the moment of combustion.
Oil/Coolant Module, Thermostat
The advanced oil/coolant and thermostat module allows the DD15 to run at more consistent operating temperatures. More consistent temperatures reduces the need to engage the fan.
Reduced fan on-time leads to a savings of 40 HP. Less fan on-time directly increases fuel economy.

Daimler Trucks 22
Drivability Benefits The DD15 allows not only great fuel economy but also remarkable drivability. It is responsive, quiet and smooth. Engine Feature
Long flat torque curve
Function / Attribute
Long torque curves provide pulling power at lower engine rpms.
Best in Class Torque Response Contributors: - ACRS - Non-Wastegated Turbocharger
Improves engine responsiveness to driver command.
Marketing
- Less shifting - Improved performance on hills
The DD15 delivers 90% peak torque in 1.5 seconds when competitor engines are only at half of their peak pulling power. Faster torque response means: - Improved launch - Enhanced
- Low Inertia Overhead Camshafts
Integrated Jacobs Engine Brake
Benefit
progressive shifting
- Superior passing
The standard DD15 “Jake Brake” no longer sits on top of the rocker arms, but is integrated into the camshaft.
acceleration
capabilities
-
Selective braking capabilities (low, medium, high)
-
Extremely quiet operation
-
Enhanced downgrade control
-
Decreased service brake wear Daimler Trucks 23
Durability / Reliability Benefits Reliability is the ability of a system to perform and maintain its functions in routine as well as hostile or unexpected circumstances. Durability is the ability of the system to endure. The DD15 delivers on both.
Engine Feature
1.2M mile B50 Life
Function / Attribute B50 calculates the expected engine life to overhaul. B50 is the estimate of when 50% of engines will require major repair.
Cylinder Head & Engine Designed with a single slab cylinder head and robust engine block. Block
Marketing
Benefit
Higher B50 life estimate is a direct indication of robustness of design. At 1.2M miles the DD15 has the longest B50 life in the industry. -
Single slab design results in a more rigid structure
-
Single slab design, has higher clamp load on cylinder head ensuring tight seal
Daimler Trucks 24
Maintenance Cost Benefits Maintaining your investment in the DD15 is integral to meeting the industry leading 1.2M mile B50 life. The DD15’s long B50 life does not come at a high cost to its owners. The DD15 was designed with maintenance and low operating costs in mind. Engine Feature
Location of key maintenance components
Function / Attribute
Most service components were located above the frame rail.
Benefit
The DD15 was designed so most of the components were easily within reach of the service technician. Locating components above the frame rail also helps reduce service bay time. -
Improved heat dissipation
-
Superior soot suspension capacity
-
Greater protection against customer oil drain interval abuse
Large oil sump capacity (43 L)
Provides sufficient lubricant supply to maximize service drain intervals.
Maintenance free crankcase breather
The maintenance free closed crankcase system removes crankcase vapors, separates oil and returns it back into the oil sump.
While other engine manufacturers have to maintain their crankcase breather once or twice a year the DD15’s is maintenance free.
DDEC Electronics
DDEC electronics monitor the operating conditions of the engine and aftertreatment.
Provides optimal powertrain control of engine and aftertreatment functions.

Environmental Impact Benefits The DD15 makes the environment better for both the driver and mother nature. Engine Feature
Function / Attribute
Benefit
Quiet with less vibration
The integrated Jacobs engine brake, ACRS and rear gear train all contribute to reductions in noise and vibration
A quieter and a smoother ride lead to satisfied drivers.
Bio-Diesel Capability
Detroit Diesel supports the use of bio-diesel blends up to 5% (B5) volume in diesel fuel.
Modestly reduces emissions and dependence on foreign oil.
Straightforward transition to GHG 14
Designed with future emissions standards in mind (GHG 14 and beyond).
First Introduced for EPA 2007, the DD15 was designed with the fundamental foundation for a smooth transition to SCR technology
Rear Gear Train
Reduces torsional activity on crankshaft between flywheel and gear train.
Rear gear trains provide reduced vibration for a quieter and smoother ride.
High Fuel Injection Pressures help reduce Nox
Higher fuel injection pressures increase fuel atomization and results in lower burn temperatures and decreased NOx formation.
Reducing the level of NOx is critical to meeting the required emissions targets mandated by the EPA.

On Board Diagnostics (OBD 2013) Overview What is OBD 2013? •
OBD regulations require diagnostics that can detect discrete failures or degradation of components and systems. •
OBD systems must monitor all the inputs and outputs of the emissions control system to verify proper functionality.
•
OBD systems must inform the operator that a failure has been confirmed via the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
•
OBD systems must record failure codes and event data to aid repair technicians in their diagnosis and repair of failures.
•
OBD is required for all engine families.
•
The number of systems being monitored has been increased and the variances allowed (from the emissions standard) has been lowered.
•
All Detroit engines are certified to meet OBD 2013

Green House Gas 2014 (GHG14) Overview What is Greenhouse Gas 2014 (GHG14)? •
GHG14 is the government’s (EPA/NHTSA/CARB/ARB) newest emissions regulation; new regulations begin with model year 2014 vehicles and increases in stringency through model year 2018. The goal of GHG14 is to address global climate change and reduce oil consumption. Individual certification is required for the chassis, engine, and A/C system and separate standards have been issues for CO2, N2O, CH4 and HFC’s.
•
To meet GHG14 requirements OEMs must reduce tailpipe CO2 emissions by improving fuel efficiency.
•
Under the new GHG14 regulations, certified trucks and buses built model year 2014 through 2018 are projected to reduce oil consumption by 530 million barrels and greenhouse gas emissions by 270 million metric tons.
•
EPA’s greenhouse gas standards must be met beginning model year 2014, however Daimler has decided to lead the industry by certifying its 2013 vehicle fleet one year early. NHTSA’s fuel efficiency standards must be met beginning model year 2017 for diesel vehicles.
