ATM…. BTM…. AVM…. Branch Kiosks….
Whatever you call them, these new machines which quickly convert a national currency into cryptocurrency are a huge factor in today’s consumer adoption of Bitcoin. No fancy government regulations or mobile applications will ever surpass the potential for fast growth which Bitcoin ATMs bring to the industry. Widespread global access to Bitcoin ATMs will guarantee the expanded use of Bitcoin in daily commerce. The simple truth is that everyone in the world uses cash. Without exception…. Everyone. National currencies flow throughout every modern society on earth. Not everyone owns a cell phone and not everybody has a bank account or a credit card…. However, everyone, without exception uses cash. Having more Bitcoin ATM locations, where consumers can easily exchange cash into digital currency, will quickly translate into wider Bitcoin use by merchants and consumers. More Bitcoin ATMS = More Currency Exchanges = More Bitcoin Use
Every city or neighborhood that offers new Bitcoin ATMs, will experience a growth in cryptocurrency users along with a more rapid expansion of Bitcoin retail commerce. Today, these machines are cryptocurrency’s direct path to success. As more companies design and manufacture Bitcoin ATMs and more operators set up these machines, retail Bitcoin merchants will begin enjoying more customers and retail sales. This first issue of Crypto Retailer Magazine is devoted to the companies that manufacture and operate these marvelous machines. This publication is part of the Crypto Merchant Association and supports our members. Carl Mullan Editor

Genesis1 Bitcoin ATM Deployed in Brisbane, Australia SAN DIEGO, CA - May 16th, 2014 The race to launch Queensland’s first Bitcoin ATM has come to an end with Australian company Bit2Bit rolling out what is believed to be Brisbane’s first machine on May 16.
wanting to be involved in the Bitcoin movement,” he said. “The currency has grown more than one thousand per cent each year for the past four years, and people are also starting to use it as an investment.
The Bitcoin machine, which is housed at The Roastery Café in South Brisbane, will be sent live on Friday allowing digital currency users to securely exchange hard cash for the cryptocurrency or vice versa.
“The ATM is a more effective tool to buy and sell Bitcoin compared to other methods because it’s a lot faster, safer and more convenient than using some sort of exchange.” Mr Carrall also said the possibilities of Bitcoin are endless and can be used for much more than buying a coffee.
Resembling a standard banking ATM, customers can register for a Bitcoin wallet via the machine within five minutes, use or sell Bitcoins at the market price, add currency to their virtual wallets by feeding in cash, and sell Bitcoins to extract money. The Roastery Café already accepts Bitcoin as alternative payment, meaning customers can pay for their coffee or cake via the world’s most popular electronic currency. Bruce Carrall, co-owner of Rouge Coffee, said the addition of Brisbane’s first Bitcoin ATM to The Roastery Café will make it easier and more accessible for everyone to trade in digital currency. “We’ve seen a surge of interest from the mainstream population

“Bitcoin isn’t controlled by any external authority, which means no brokers, payment processors, banks, financial institutions or credit card companies taking a fee. “This makes Bitcoin attractive to people sending funds to friends or family overseas, and there’s also massive potential for online shopping and cheap, quick crossborder money transfers.” “I think we’ll continue to see a spike in the demand and value for Bitcoin as more and more ATM’s enter the market.” Bitcoin, which came into existence in 2009, is a digital cryptocurrency that allows peer-to-peer payments to be made online.
While one Bitcoin (BTC) is currently worth $AU 468.60, its value soared to more than $AU 1,000 in 2013. Bitcoin advocates say the system works because it is completely distributed and relies on trust in a mathematical algorithm, not in a bank. The Bitcoin network is made up of regular users who run ‘Bitcoin miners’, or powerful specialised computers, to process transactions and ensure there is no doublecounting. Bitcoin may provide an easier answer to international trading as it’s a global currency and can be accepted everywhere, while customers don’t have to worry about currency conversion. Customers can catch a glimpse of Brisbane’s first Bitcoin ATM at The Roastery Café, which is located at 25 Glenelg Street in South Brisbane. About Bit2Bit Bitcoin at your fingertips. Robocoin ATM Kiosk Manufacturer
Based out of Las Vegas, the Robocoin kiosk was one of the first two-way Bitcoin ATMs that entered the global marketplace. This ATM was launched into commercial operation at a retail Vancouver establishment in October of 2013. Robocoins kiosks are now operating in Japan, Australia, London, Israel, Singapore, Canada and the United States (Texas, California and now South Carolina). These marvelous machines feature two-way operation, cash-to-digital and digital-to-cash, plus, each machine includes substantial KYC and AML features. With an estimated cost of $15,000 to $20,000 this is currently the most expensive Bitcoin ATM on the market. However, the additional cost covers many important compliance features required for proper operation in the United States and several other locations around the globe. Robocoin software, coupled with bank grade hardware, was factory designed to operate legally within all US states and to meet federal financial compliance requirements. Customers using the Robocoin machine should appreciate the company’s efforts to secure those Bitcoin transactions from fraud and attack. The machines use biometric authentication technology including 3 authentication systems: telephone, PIN and vascular palm vein biometrics.
Robocoin Machine

Robocoin’s enrollment requirements offer customer visibility and enable operators to comply with Anti Money Laundering and Know Your Customer regulations. Customer profiles include information gathered from Driver’s License/ID scans, a live matched License/ID photo taken by the kiosk camera, and further identification using the palm vein scanning technology. All of this information helps to confirm a customer’s identity and even provide proof of residency for KYC requirements. Using the Robocoin software, the machine operators have the ability to identify customers via the dashboard and to approve or deny any unsavory characters. For easier international use, all of the Robocoin security features can be enabled or disabled individually by the onsite operator. Their account software allows users to monitor accounts online from anywhere in the world.
Crypto Retailer Magazine
In addition to the unique compliance features, these high end Robocoin machines also now create a linked Bitcoin cash network that operates online and through a physical presence. The company is now calling the kiosks “branches” and the machines not only handle cryptocurrency operations but also money transfer services. As of June, Robocoin had branches in thirteen different countries. A “branch” is considered a Bitcoin ATM with the new additional money transfer features. Robocoin permits fund transfers between branches to anyone, using only their phone number. Even if the customer is new, the transferred money will be arrive and be able to get picked up through the local Robocoin machine after local registration. The transaction is identified by the phone number. Robocoin online accounts are open for trade from any branch thus a transfer from one branch could be picked up at any other branch only moments later.
This could be a game changing technology for the global remittances industry which now accounts for $500 billion in transfers a year.
Robocoin has a 24/7 team of people working to match the face of the customer using the kiosk to the face on the ID given during first time use. Each unit has a high speed thermal printer, palmvein scanner along with a dedicated ID card/passport scanner. A dedicated bar-code scanner and magnetic card reader are also a part of this package. The kiosks have privacy shields on the touch screen and are WiFi, ethernet and 3g capable. The palm vein scanner is a great identifying metric. This data can uniquely identify customers but is a useless metric outside of the Robocoin Kiosk. There currently is no palm vein database in the world. For further protection of customer accounts, only the Bitcoins needed to maintain operational liquidity are stored in the machines’ hot wallets. The bulk of funds are protected and are stored in a secure offline system. Sending money to friends and family is now as easy as typing in a phone number, even if the recipient doesn’t have a Robocoin account they can still receive money. Robocoin machines are now in operation across 13 different countries and accept transactions in at least 12 separate national currencies and one machine can hold upwards of $500,000 in cash.
Helping to protect against theft and fraud, these powerful kiosks use biometric authentication technology and require three factors of authentication - phone, PIN, and palm-vein A positive feature of the Robocoin “branches” is that money sent from one party to another is an instant transaction. Unlike banks and expensive money transfer services, the amounts transferred through these machines don’t require a large fee or a lengthy wait for network confirmations, ATM receipts, or bank wires. Customers can insert bank notes and instantly the amount is credited to an on-screen balance. That balance can then be instantly withdrawn from any branch machine.
Robocoin online accounts are open for trade from any branch.
Hardware included: • Two Cash Dispensers (2200 Bills Each) • One Cash Acceptor (2200 Bills)
The new Robocoin purchase options means additional funds upfront but zero ongoing operator fees.
Starting in July, Los Angeles Bitcoin users will have the ability to buy and sell through Robocoin branches. New California locations are opening s at two Locali Conscious Convenience stores: one in Venice and one in Hollywood. These machines are operated through ExpressCoin. The company include eight team members, six of them are engineers, operating from a downtown Las Vegas office. Robocoin kiosks are manufactured in the US.
In the hopes to further nurture Bitcoin adoption and Robocoin kiosks are delivered with a top of the line bulk availability, the company has begun offering a new cost/ cash dispenser, bulk cash validator/acceptor. purchase solution for operators.

The exchange rate is floating and can vary per machine. Selling requires Bitcoin from a user’s LocalBitcoins wallet. The sale is processed and the user receives a deposit code for an amount of fiat currency. The user inputs that code into the ATM and receives cash. The machines can be programmed to efficiently process over 100 supported fiat currencies. Each machine is also equipped with a bank note recycler. ATM’s are manufactured in Finland and first two are installed in Helsinki. The price for the first batch model was 1990 EUR + VAT. This particular ATM concept was originally developed by bitcoinkiosk. com. LocalBitcoins.com bought the entire package in late 2013. Lamassu A Leading Manufacturer of Bitcoin Vending Machines (ATM)
July/August 2014

Lamassu manufactures a one-way Bitcoin ATM that transacts cash-to-digital. The machine was unveiled in May at the Bitcoin 2013 conference in San Jose, California. The company has also recently emerged with a matching “stand” for the machine that offers a note dispenser that, when coupled with the ATM, permits two-way operation. When the new stand accompanies the main Lamassu unit this operation permits both cash-to-digital and Bitcoin-to-cash. The company run their operation from New Hampshire but manufacturing is completed in Portugal.
22
Because they are simple and fast to use, the machines are very popular with operators and Bitcoin customers. Unfortunately, simple and fast also means the machines do not provide any first party compliance measures (AML/KYC) such as an ID scan or facial recognition. The company has stated it is working to add these additional features. Buying Bitcoins from one of these sturdy machines generally takes only about 15 seconds. Bitcoin Machines are priced at: $6,500 USD for one 1-9 units. $5,500 for 10 units or more.

Another bonus for ATM operators using the Lamassu machine is its lack of an operating fee. Many other machines, such as Robocoin, charge the operators a fee on the total transaction amounts. Here is the fee schedule for some machine operators. • BitAccess - 1% of total • Genesis 1 - 1% of total • Robocoin - 34% of fees with a minimum of 1% of total • Lamassu – 0 - No fee Lamassu began accepting ATM pre-orders in August 2013 and shipped the first units in October. Another 25 units were shipped in November, then in late December
it was announced that 100 machines had been sold. In April 2014, CoinDesk reported that Lamassu had now sold over 220 machines. In May 2014, Lamassu debuted the new ATM “stand” that allows customers to exchange Bitcoin-to-cash, enabling two-way ATM transactions through its units for the first time. This new “stand” is part of a modular system which allows existing one-way ATM operators to add a digital-to-cash platform using the stands built in Santo Tirso bill dispenser. The stand holds up to 1,000 notes in fiat currency
Lamassu has set up an online map of bitcoin ATM locations that will be updated as new units go live across the globe. https://lamassu.is/maps/

SBEX and BitAccess are deploying a Bitcoin ATMs network in Switzerland Press Release – 18 June 2014 SBEX SA and BitAccess Inc. are proudly announcing a partnership for the deployment of a Bitcoin ATMs network within Switzerland. Both companies have been actively collaborating since several months on the BitAccess ATM prototypes. The first permanent Bitcoin ATM was installed in Geneva earlier this year in a local restaurant where Geneva Bitcoin enthusiasts are also gathering. Since its first deployment, the BitAccess ATM in Geneva has attracted a lot of attention in the financial industry. It was also showcased several times at the Geneva Internet Platform hosted within the United Nations premises. The first round of 10 ATMs have been shipped from Canada to Switzerland. Moe Adham, co-founder at BitAccess Inc. : “This partnership is a key milestone for BitAccess. Building our presence in the heart of Europe was crucial in order to continue the deployment of our ATMs more closely to our customers. Switzerland is a important choice for the proximity with all major financial and international institutions.”
The announcement follows the admission of SBEX SA as a financial intermediate within the Self-Regulatory Organization (SRO), Association Romande des Intermédiaires Financiers (ARIF). Prior to this admission, SBEX SA has mandated KPMG for its financial and anti-money laundering auditing. The admission process has been submitted by the ARIF to the Swiss financial regulator FINMA that has confirmed the need for Bitcoin brokerage activities to respect AML regulations and undergo registration with a SRO. The FINMA also recognizes crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin as valid means of payment. Furthermore, this implies companies accepting deposits in crypto-currencies from their clients should apply for a banking license in full analogy with fiat currencies. Alexis Roussel, CEO at SBEX SA: “This acknowledgment from the Swiss regulator FINMA opens fantastic opportunities for crypto-currencies in Switzerland. It creates a stable environment where it is clear what can or can’t be made. The whole team is excited by this news!”
SBEX SA is a Swiss based cryptocurrency broker. It is developing several financial services around crypto-currencies with its partner DigiThink SA, a Bitcoin specialized consulting company. Open Bitcoin ATM (Kit) DIY ATM Kit Open Bitcoin ATM is the world’s first open-source automated teller machine. It can be used for trade, education and experimentation. There is a complete DIY step by step tutorial available and can be completed in about 7 – 10 hours with simple tools. The cost of components is less than $650 new, however, used parts can be purchased for even less on eBay. The website describes the transaction process: Open Bitcoin ATM transacts Bitcoin with prerendered QR codes stored locally on the machine. While there are tradeoffs, this approach has important advantages: 1) Significantly reduces cost and complexity of ATM platform. 2) Eliminates security, performance, latency, and uptime risks associated with a network connection. 3) Makes transactions very fast and convenient (no need to access blockchain with every transaction). 4) Allows for ATM operator to mitigate risk of Bitcoin currency fluctuation. 5) Mitigates risk of loss due to theft. While the QR codes are pre-rendered and stored on the ATM, the BTC value is not. This means the wallet value can be updated anytime before the QR code is dispensed.
Kit requires intermediate soldering skills and familiarity with the Arduino platform. Specifications: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

For further precision and control, QR code inventory may be time boxed (future dates and times) and the BTC value assigned according to the spot rate just prior to the time box. This is a convenient way to mitigate exchange rate risk. Buy the available kit or build one from scratch. Either way, this is a great pioneer style unit for trade and experimentation.

Life Imitating Art? Mechanical Bitcoin vending machine from the summer of 2012. This photo shows an original Bitcoin vending machine. Not meant for commercial operation, this was artwork created for the university’s summer exhibition by Max F. Albrecht entitled “Bitcoin Vending Machine”. It was produced for the Fine Art Project “Panta Rhei” at the BauhausUniversity in Weimar, mentored by Prof. Norbert W. Hinterberger and Naomi T. Salmon. This Bitcoin vending machine converted €1 coins into their equivalent Bitcoin value. The machine dispersed a little box containing a link to an easywallet.org webwallet valued at 1€ (minus the material costs). No electricity or Internet connection was required. That summer, Bitcoins were priced at about $9 each. When a coin was inserted, the machine vended this small cardboard box, shown below, which contained the printed receipt for retrieval of the Bitcoins.
Above is an image of the repurposed vending machine. Congratulations to Max, who at the time was also trying to explore the possibilities of Bitcoin POS systems. Photos courtesy of http://blog.maschinenraum.tk/ July 15, 2012 July/August 2014

The Digital Currency Challenge: Shaping Online Payment Systems Through U.S. Financial Regulations By P. Carl Mullan
P
rivate online digital currency systems offer people accessible, convenient, and inexpensive everyday financial tools outside of traditional bank-owned and operated platforms. Digital currency systems facilitate local and international fund transfers, online and offline payments, and simple cash-to-digital everyday financial products without the need for a conventional bank account of any retail bank product. Over the past several years, Bitcoin has grown into an efficient personto-person and person-to-business payment system without the backing of any bank or financial institution. This phenomenon is producing a new level of an on- and offline commerce and a society much more attuned to digital currency systems. The Digital Currency Challenge details how new 2007-2008 U.S. legal issues surrounding digital currency products forced companies from the U.S. market and caused the Treasury Department to enact stricter regulations. Mullan profiles new and innovative present day digital currency systems, such as Bitcoin, and illustrates how software designers and monetary theorists use new technology to circumvent current U.S. regulations. This work also explains how new digital currency systems are not just software products, but tools providing financial freedom to people in countries all around the world.

Intuit Is Now Testing Bitcoin There are two major barriers that prevent typical small businesses from taking bitcoin payments: 1) They need a bitcoin wallet. With recent news about Mt. Gox in the media, trusting a third party bitcoin wallet provider can be scary. 2) They don’t want to deal with price volatility. When it comes to their revenue, small businesses just want to deal with dollars. Enter QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments, a bitcoin service that enables small businesses to take bitcoin payments without ever having a bitcoin wallet or ever seeing any bitcoins. With QuickBooks Bitcoin Payments, you: • Only see dollars when you accept bitcoin payments. • Pay less on all bitcoin transactions. Compare that to 1.75% to 2.75% + fees on card transactions. • Never worry about chargebacks from fraudulent buyers. Chargebacks don’t exist in bitcoin.
Update 6/26/14 Intuit has now enabled all merchants in their network to accept Bitcoin through the new PayByBitcoin service. This is a free extension for QuickBooks Online that allows business owners to accept Bitcoin and integrates the payment processing with Bitcoin and Coinbase.
