Technique
‐The program (or project) evaluation and review technique, commonly abbreviated as PERT, is a statistical tool, used in project management, which was designed to analyze and represent the tasks involved in completing a given project.
First developed by the United States Navy in the 1950s, it is commonly used in conjunction with the Critical Path Method (CPM)
Basic technique in preparation of PERT/CPM The essential technique for using CPM is to construct a model of the project that includes the following: 1.
A list of all activities required to complete the project (typically categorized within a work breakdown structure), 2. The time (duration) that each activity will take to complete, 3. The dependencies between the activities and, 4. Logical end points such as milestones or deliverable items.

Network Diagram
The network describes sequential relationship among different activities on a project. Example, activity “C‐ D” can not be started according to the network until activity “A ‐B” has been completed.
C can not start until both A & B are completed
Network Diagram A must be completed before either B or C
Node to Node is called event
Both A & C must be completed before either B or D
Network Diagram A & B must be completed before C can start. D depends only on B & A
Network Diagram : is tool in determining the Critical Path or the critical duration of the project called CPM.
Sample estimation of Task duration
Excavation works natural soil, Vol= 120 cu.m. Equipment capability : 120 cu.m./hr. DT capacity = 8.0 cu.m. Task duration = 120/32 =3.75 days Hauling Distance = 30 km Say 4 days Ave. Hauling speed = 30 kph Loading Time = 15 mins. Unloading time = 15 mins. Hauling time = 30/30 = 1 hr Loading time = 15/60 = 0.25 hr Unloading time = 15/60 = 0.25 hr Return trip = 30/60 = 0.5 hr Total Cycle time = 2.0 hrs No. of trip per day = 8hrs/2 hrs = 4 Vol. per day = 32 cu.m./day
