Grade 1 Kyoiku Kanji The Kyoiku Kanji are the first 1006 kanji that Japanese children learn in primary school. In secondary school they learn another 939 kanji for a total of 1945 kanji. These 1945 kanji are the so-called Joyo Kanji. Many newspapers, books, and all government publications limit themselves to this set of kanji and provide furigana for all other kanji that they might choose to print.
