BMW puts pleasure back into motoring Bayerische Motoren Werke AG. Munich. Germany · Pri(lted in Western Germany 12 160 e 120 I V. 66
Provisions were made for five models in the New Range, we thought that this would cover all requirements. Until we asked ourselves what can we do for the drivers who are waiting for a car that on one hand is no dearer than a medium priced car, but which on the other hand is a true BMW? We therefore buiit the new BMW1600.
Why is it so fascinating to sit in the driving seat of a BMW? It hardly looks different from any other - apart from the obvious. It has five seats and a lot of luggage space like many others. It is no luxury ship and no street cruiser. What then is the reason?
In today's heavy traffic, people are divided. Those who are not concerned about driving nose-to-tail, or following in someone's exhaust, are served well by other cars. But those who seek their own way, who think young and act dynamically, and prefer to lead rather than be led, need a car with a lot of spirit and high reserves. The cars of the New Range were designed for just these drivers: the BMW 1800, the BMW2000, the BMW 2000 TI, the BMW2000 CS, the BMW 2000 C Automatic. And now the new BMW 1600.
M-WZ 480
It is no accident that cars of the New Range are characterized by extraordinary driving qualities and the utmost reserves of power. For fifty years/ high output machinery has been the focal point of the BMW programme.Fromlto28cylinder engines/ from 13 to 360 horse-power for aero· planes/ boats/ cars/ motorcycles and rail vehicles.In-line, rear, radial and V-form. 294 world records have been attained with BMW cars. To· day/ after thirty years/ the legendary Junkers 52 still flies on domestic routes in Spain and South America with a BMW power unit and when Hubert Hahne in August 1965 achieved his sensational lap record of 10 mins. 12.2 secs. on the Nuerburgring/ he was driving a BMW 1800 TI.
These experiences speak for themselves/ when a new en~ine is developed by BMW - JUSt as that of the new BMW 1600.
If there were fixed rules for car production/ one of these would have to be: the livelier the engine is/ the greater must be the capability of the chassis into which it is built/ for high reserves of power are only of use to you if they can be used at all times without risk.
BMW cars are famous for their superlative driving performance and their brilliant cornering abilities. Ask our racing drivers, who constantly use these reserves to the limit. Or drive a few miles in the new BMW 1600 ·and then ask yourself. Your answer will be no different.
When you buy a BMW, then you also buy the comfort of a BMW. We will refrain from reciting all the things that we take for granted. Let us rather give a thought to the unusual things: you will l;>e struck by the hollow shape of the seat and back rest, which give excellent lateral support. Likewise the uncluttered styling and clear arrangement of the instruments, which because of their angle and covering are completely dazzle free. On the other hand, the glove box is not at first visible. Before you look for it in vain: it pops out from underneath the dashboard at the touch of a finger.
We have given the BMW 1600 high reserves of power. We have given it a body, which by means of extraordinary road holding and driving comfort, preserves your strenght and nerves even in adverse driving conditions. We have given it brakes, which make it easy to
m1n1mise the driving faults of others, by a touch of a pedal. We have created the new BMW 1600 so that you can discover that even in the age of dense traffic there is still real pleasure in motoring!

The styling complements the considerably increased performance. Shape determined by function and specific uses. Technical. but at the same time sporty streamlining . Stabilized by the front spoiler and the mounted rear spo iler. Bot h features adopted from motor sport. Practical results from the race tracks together with scientific back -up from the wind tunne l. The front spoi ler reduces air resistanc e and lift on the front axle. The spoiler can be removed without difficulty, should particular road conditions make this necessary.
..
..
The rear spoiler, of particularly flexible material, increases rear axle adhesion, avoids turbulence and reduces drag. With its outstanding engine performance the turbo is kept firmly on the road by 5 ~ inch steel rims and tyres size 185/70 VR 13. The wheel arches have been broadened and the wings can be unscrewed to make way for even broader tyres for racing. The absence of bumpers give a functional front line. Black radiator grill. sports rims, rectangu lar four-chamber rear lights are rational accents on design.
The principal item of the BMW 2002 turbo is the eng ine. Based on the successful 4 cylinder -tii -motor w ith fue l injection. and in addition. the power of t he turbosupercharger system . The working principle of the turbo-supercharger : a turbine is driven by collected exhaust gases. The supercharger forces additional fresh air into the cylinder under high pressure. This increased volume of air causes the injection pump t o introduce the correct amount of fuel. The more gases are produced. the quicker the turbine runs. Combustion is more intensive. Id eally low exhaust pol lution. The eng in e has 170 DIN HP (bhp) at 5800 rpm and deve lops a torque of 24. 5 kgm (m kp) at 4000 rpm . Resu lting acce leration: from 0to100 km/hr in 6,9 secs. Highest speed: over 210 km/hr.
In everyday road usage w ith normal motoring requirements. full engine performance is ready to be called upon. The turbo supercharger starts off gently at a low rev. count. The engine, tuned to high performance, runs with little noise. Without vibrating. Without jerking. The exceptional performance of the BMW 2002 turbo requires exceptional design technology : an oil cooler. An exhaust system of highly heat-resistant material. Oil cooler. High power condenser ignition system. An exhaust made from high tempera ture resistant material.
An exemplary chassis construction. provid ing safety and stabil ity for the BMW 2002 turbo performance. This is based on the adapted technology of the wellproven BMW 2002 suspension: spring struts, which ensure optimum roadholding under all conditions. A steering system that permits fast exact steering manoeuvres. An impressive rear axle with inclined semitrailing arms which adjust back wheel toe-in and camber independently and t herefore always guarantee the best possible lateral stabi lity and road adhesion. Torsion bar stabi lizers at the front and back. Large internally ventilated disc brakes at the front. Reinforced rear drum brakes. Brake servo and brake pressure limiter for the back.axle. The limited slip differential makes it possible to corner accurately and move safely between confined points.
The cockpit of the BMW 2002 turbo is the realization of all experience gained from motor sport and new findings in motoring psychology. Designed for quick reactions. Short reach operations. Concentrated at a glance inspection. Rentrop bucket seats with head -rests provide sure hold round fast bends. Sports steering wheel. firm grip. easy to hand le. The instrument panel is finished in red. set against a dazzle-free black background- a clear and well-defined signal to the driver. Rev. counter. Speedometer up to 240 km/hr. Charge-pressure gauge.
The BMW 2002 turbo combines performance w ith appropriate comfort. The interior and the seats are fitted for t he wel lbeing and comfort of the passengers and driver. Relieved of tension. the driver can concentrate fully, making quick and well -con sidered decisions. Rentrop front bucket seats ensure fatigue-free travelling. They can be adjusted to every sitting position and can even be set right back: yet leaving sufficient room for the other passengers. The fixed rear seats are made to leave comfortable leg-room. Well -designed fittings: Like the wide ang le doors: side panelling with built-in arm rests: heating and fresh air system to suit weather conditions: generous sized boot. Well -designed fittings: for the fully developed production li ne vehicle designed with driver and passengers in mind.
The BMW 2002 turbo body has not on ly been designed on aerodynamic and aesthetic lines: other important factors were the strict BMW safety requirements.

Cross-braked passenger compartment. .. Crumple" zones front and rear absorb energy on impact. Firmly anchored seats. Safety steering assembly. Impact protection on the instrument panel. Inertia reel safety belts adapted to the passengers' movements. Headrests on the front seats. Adjustable inside driving mirror. In addition to these passive safety features the BMW 2002 turbo is equ ipped with the maximum of active safety features: an engine w ith pa ramount accele ration. A safety chassis t hat hand les sudden swerves safely. The cent rifuga l force when rounding bends is easi ly coped w ith - up to 80 per cent of t he car's weig ht. A dua l twin circu it braking system wh ich, even wi th the failure of one brake cylinder. is far above the lega l requirement. All round vision. Functional instruments. All this is complemented by effective and safe lighting: halogen headlights and rectangular 4 chamber rear lights.
Active safety 1. The powerful eng ine with its inherent quiet runn ing. ensures driver alertness. shortens recovery manoeuvres and keeps accident risk to a min imum. 2. Suspension. The BMW c hassis has become an ideal example even in critica l situauons. it al lows correction of driving errors. 3. Steering. The accurate steering has been developed to suit all driving situat ions. Safer directional hold even over surface bumps. 4. It is the harmony of performance and smooth running that makes BMWs power unit superior. The stea lthy power is unfolded in the com bustion chambers, which are laid out as swirl action chambers : the fuel-air mixture is swirled evenly and is soft and clean burning for the environment. This technical know-how provides excellent acceleration and cruising speeds, with reserves of power instantly available for overtaking. And finally, provides for a vitality, a better condition for t he driver: the high flexibil ity combines with the vibration-free rotat ion in the crank assembly, characteristics which protect driver and material from fatigue. In add ition to the prevision of the combustion there is the mechanica l precision of moving parts. Through careful electronica lly ca lcul ated balance-crank-shaft w ith 5 main bearings-through overhead cam-shaft and overhead valves in inverted V-arrangement BMW realises the ideal principle of the reliable, economical piston engine with the smoothness of a turbine. Engines gave BMW their name and recog nition. Experts view BMW power units as th e best in the world. The 4 cyl inder carburettor engine of the BMW 1602: 85 DIN HP (bhp) at 5700 rpm. Maximum torqu e at 13.2 mkp. Acceleration from 0 - 100 km/ h in 12.8 seconds. The 4 cylinder carburettor engine of the BMW 1802: 90 DIN HP (bhp) at 5250 rpm. Maximum torque at 14.6 mkp. BMW 2002 BMW 2002tii
The 4 cylinder fuel injection engine of th e BMW 2002 tii Kugelfischer system. Highly precise metering of air-fuel ratio, hence increased performance: 130 DIN HP (bhp) at 5800 rpm. Maximum torque at 18.1 mkp . Acceleration f rom 0 - 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds. Top speed 186 km/h (115 mph).
The chassis matched to the high performance of t he power unit offers more safety than BMW drivers require for everyday motoring. Its design reflects a section of automobile history. When this started to become generally accepted. BMW already had ten years head start in producing from their excellent chassis. This brilliant chassis which still sets an example today: independent suspension. spring struts at the front inclined semitrailing arms at the rear. The pivots of the semi -trailing arms in the rear are positioned inclined towards the body: ensuring accurate lateral adhesion. The enti rety reflects the care given to the details. BMW chassis offer the d river the safety to react calm ly even on difficult cornering. They guarant ee maximum road-holding and sensitive contact with the road. The steering geometry of the spring strut axle reduces the sensitivity of the chassis to damage from bad road surfaces. and neutralises developing centrifugal forces, on even the sharpest corners. The safety of the brakes conforms to driving safety standards. A duplex twin-circuit brake system with disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rea r ensure that the braking effect is sti ll above the legal requirement. even if one circu it fails. The brake servo makes braking noticably easier. This elaborately detailed input and t he f ine tuning of one group of elements to another, expla ins the exemplary steering, braking, and driving characteristics. in every situation. on every road, at any speed.

1 Power Unit The powerful power unit with its inherently smooth running conserves the fitness of the driver and reduces overtaking manoeuvres and accident risk. 2 Suspension The BMW safety chassis has become an example. Even in critical situations it allows for the correction of driving errors. 3 Steering The exact steering can cope w ith any driving situation. Safe. un-erring. straight runn ing . even when obstructed. 4 Brakes The duplex twin-circu it bra ke system w ith brake servo gives sufficient braking effect. even on the failure of one circuit. to exceed the legal req uirement 5 Tyres Tyres. chassis. and power unit are balanced with the utmost care for optimum road- holding and highest comfort 6 Layout of the Cockpit BMW lays out the interior according to the strictest lines of functional design. Operating safety, spontaneously legible instruments. safe piloting thanks to the body-contoured seating. All these details are the result of year long research and together add up to maximum driving safety.
Passive safety
7 Safety Cell The passenger cell is specially rigid and remains almost undamaged in any kind of accident The doors remain closed on impact However, they can be opened after an accident 8 Crumple Zones Front and rear form the crumple zone which absorb the force of the impact Steering column and steering gear lie outside the deformation zones. Through this, the forward thrust of the steering column is reduced to a minimum. 9 Steering System The boss of t he 4 spoke safety steering wheel deforms at minor impact 10 Safety Belts As standard. BMW fits 3point anchorage safety belts in the f ront 11 Headrests Heigh adjustable headrests in t he front fitted as standard protect the neck.
The functiona l comfort of the small BMW is shown in the cockpit. The comfortabl e seats are body-contoured. They give rigid lateral support when cornering, immediate driving awareness. consciousness of t he contact between chassis and road, and conserve the energy of the driver on long journeys. The front seats are reclining. Their headrests and 3point anchorage safety belts (with automatic winder if required) are part of the standard comfort-safety equipment. The bench seat in t he rear. with bucket-shaped backrests. offers the comfort of individual seating. The touri ng models have single seats which can be folded down. All controls are easy to reac h. The round instruments (in the 200 2 tii, enhanced by a rev. counter) are large, clear and anti -dazzle. whilst the tel ltale lights for oil pressure, hand brake, fuel reserve. choke, hazard warning lights, battery charge, direction indicator and high beam. can be seen in a single glance. The accurately adjustable warm and fresh air ventilation is supported by a three speed high performance fan.
3
The BMW touring has the largest interior of this model range. The backrests of the rear seats can be fo lded down individua lly and fastened in this position with a single operation. Thus producing a horizontal, carpeted. loading area. The extra room can be used in many different ways, for sport and leisure. For hunting, fi shing, sailing, skiing, camping, cycling, for holidays. for business. and for a large family. The weight of the third door in the rear is balanced by means of a gas pressure spring. enabling the door to be moved easi ly. As standard al l touring models are equipped with heated rear window. The fastback reduces air resistance: the touring is not an estate car. but a sporty though family-minded alternative to the conventional saloon. It is available in three versions.
I
BMW builds cars for t he individua list. Therefore. BMW offers a ra nge of special optional equipment w ith which the driver can equip. accentuate or complete his car in accordance with his ind ividual taste. Available for the various models in this range are: Sport Parts: 5speed gear box. limited slip differential. oi I cooler for automatic models. torsion bar stabiliser front and rear. steel thread radia l tyres. sport rims. rev. cou nter light alloy sports wheels, sports bucket seat s with headrests. Powerplant
The Bavarian Motor Works has maintained its position of leadership in engine design for more than 50 years. In the 2002 and 2002 tii powerplants. BMW has achieved an extraordinary blend of high performance and smooth. quiet running. This is due chiefly to the fact that these engines employ swirl-action. hemispherically-shaped combustion chambers. These fan the fuel -air mixture evenly and concentrate it around the spark plugs. The combustion thus produced is remarkably com plete. resu lting in maximum power yield and extremely clean burning. This in turn makes possible bril liant respons iveness at any speed. It also results in excellent fuel economy. Complementing the highly efficient combustion systems are the engines' ruggedness and durabi lity. Their design features an overhead camshaft and inclined overhead valves in V formati on. They achieve an optimal ba lance of masses through the use of five main bearings supporting the crankshaft. BMW engines have earned their reputation t hrough th e atta inment of an ideal combination of characteristics: they combine the smoothness of a turbine with the dependability and efficiency of a piston engine.

BMW2002 tii 4-cylinder in line engine with Kugelfischer f uel injection system for ultra-precise metering of fue l-air mixture and higher performance at given engine speed. 125 hp (SAE J 245) net at 5.500 rpm. Maximum torque 127 ft/lb (SAE J 245) at 4.000 rpm. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 9.9 seconds.
Suspension
Safe driving at high speed is chiefly a matter of suspension . BMW has developed a system that is unexcelled in its ability to provide surefooted roadholding. This system is fully independent at all four wheels. It features spring struts in front. with eccentric displaced coil springs, trail ing links, and hydrau lic sh ock absorbers. Th e struts are inclined to the rear. Axle pivot inclination reduces the castor angle. This increases the negative camber of the outer wheel when the car is turning, thus providing greater latera l stability. Spring and control-arm shaft are seperate. This makes steering easier, even with wide tires. Spring travel is 6.7 inches. The rear axles are multijointed. Suspension is on semi -trai ling arms. Telescopic shock absorbers and coil springs are combined with forward -inclined spring struts. Spring travel is 6 .7inches. On a mountain road or a superhighway, BMW roadholding is outstanding. Brakes Stopping pow er is obviously of critical importance in a high-performance car. The BMW 2-liter series is equipped with an extremely effective brake system.
It features d iscs in front. drums in the rear. all servo assisted. While most cars today use a simple system employing one hydraulic system on the front wheels and one on the rear. this wasn't good enough for BMW. Instead, we developed a dual twin circuit brake system. In the BMW system, t he first circuit acts on all four wh eels. If the first circuit should fail, th e second circuit will still provide 75% of the car's braking power. Superior brakes are one more example of the ref inement BMW has achieved in automotive engineering.
Safety At the Bavarian Motor Works, no phase of engineering development has a higher priority than safety. Ours is a constantly on going program of innovation, testing, and improvement. As a resu lt. the new 2-liter BMW's are equipped with a board range of safety features, both active and passive.
\

•
,I ••.••••••••
By active safety we mean. of course, the abi lity of the car to avoid an accident. Among such features are: 1 Engine. W ith its brilliant acceleration and great power reserves. the BMW 2-liter provides the driver w ith a wide safety margin on wh ich to draw. When he needs instantaneous response. he has it. 2 Suspension . Fully independent suspension provides remarkable roadhold ing and extreme agility. No other car today is more sure-footed. especially rapid evasive action becomes necessary. 3 Steering Worm and ro ller mechanism is quick, positive. and light to the touch. with exceptionally good road fee l. 4 Brakes. Servo-assisted d iscs up front with drums in the rear provide great stopping power. Dual twin circuit system. If the first circuit fails. 75% of braking ability is retained. 5 Tires. Radial ply construction fo r unsurpassed dependability and adhesion to any road surface. More rugged and longer-lived. 6 Cockpit design. All controls with in easy reach . No unnecessary driver movement. Glare -free instruments are instantly readable. By passive safety BMW means those features whi ch protect the car's occupants when an accident is unavoidable: 7 Passeng er com partment. Extremely rigid, with specially constructed cross-braces. Doors rema in shut in a co llision yet can be opened afterward. 8 Crush zones. Front and rea r. Convert col lision energy into pre-calculated deformation of metal. Fuel tank is under th e trunk floor. protected by the spare wheel. 9 Steering equipment. Located behind the front axle support. so that the steering column ca nnot penetrate deeply into the car in case of co llision . 10 Safety belts. Standard. 3-terminal design, with automatic reel retraction. 11 Headrests. Standard in front.
j_
Cockpit The BMW 2002. 2002 tii series are fast. highly maneuverable automobiles. Therefore the cockpit is laid out with the same objective that characterizes all other aspects of the car: efficiency. The instruments are large, round. and glarefree. Readable at a glance. The steering wheel is a sporty four-spoke. with padded center. All controls are immediately within the driver's rearch. The short-throw shifter is directly at hand. There is no distraction. No waste motion. This car is bu ilt for the driver. The man w ho wants high performance. but with the sure knowledge that he is completely in command. Comfort The interior of the BMW 2002. 2002 tii provides plenty of leg. shoulder. and headroom for both driver and passengers. So efficient is its space engineering that. for a car of its size. its roominess is surprising. Outward visibility is excellent in all directions. thanks to unusually large windows. The seats have been orthopedically designed to minimize fatigue on long trips. and to provide firm lateral support during cornering . Seating position can be exactly adjusted to individual needs. and the front buckets have fully recl ining backs. Warm and fresh air ventilation can be precisely regu lated. and is supplemented by a powerful fan which can be regulated through out a range of speeds. Headrests in front. and three-terminal seatbelts with automatic reel retraction. are standard equipment. The cockpit and the entire interior of the BMW 2D02. 2002 tii are clearly designed for sport. for safety, and for comfort. And above all. for total driver control.
Optional Equipment
The following optional features. available at extra cost. make it possible to individualize the 2002. 2002 tii while fully retaining all of the car's essential character: Automatic transmission (2002 only). AM/FM radio. Tachometer (standard on tii). Manual or electric sunroof. Metal lic paint. Light al loy w heels. Torsion bar stabilizer (standard front and rear on tii) . Steel-belted radial tires.

The small step up to the 1502 is the great leap forward to BMW Regardless of size and equipment, every BMW car is a harmonious combination of
performance and sophistication, with a high level of automotive technology forming the basis for safety and economy. The most compact interpretation of this indisputable concept is theBMW1502-a somewhat smal ler large car rather than the larger small cars produced by so many ot her manufacturers. The BMW 1502 offers excellence in engine and chassis,
in bodywork, equipment and safety at attractive terms. It does not1n any way detract from the pleasure of being a BMW owner, if anything it increases the pleasure of becoming one.

The BMW 1502 has 1573 cc and develops a maximum output of 55.2 kW (75 BHP DIN) at 5800 rpm. This accelerates the BMW 1502 from 0 to 100 km/h in 14.3 s.(O to 60 mph in 13.8s.)Topspeedis155km/h. (96 mph) This impressive development of power is the result of intensive technical and practical research work. An example of this is the hemispherical swirl action combustion chamber. This ensures intensive, silken-smooth combustion of the fuel and air mixture. But the BMW 1502 engine is not only noteworthy for its powerfu l elegance, its flexible torsional and tractive power - the final proofs of its worth are its total reliability, the result of years of refinement, its long life expectancy and in particular its economy - it uses standard
grade petrol. The BMW 1502 chassis is a form of technical life insurance at al l speeds. Its special design - front spring struts, rear semi-trail ing arms - is one of the most efficient in the world. It combines precision at high speeds and excellent road adhesion with comfort and sophistication.

I.
The bodywork of the BMW 1502 is both passenger compartment and safety cell. It is designed so that in any accident the impact forces are absorbed by the col lapsible zones and the passenger compartment safety cell remains unharmed. BMW have conducted an extensive series of crash experiments to determine the exact time relationship between impact, vehicle
deformation and the effectiveness of the car's safety measures, and to test and perfect these safety measures. The result of this systematic work is the ideal combination of safety measures for a car: the 'BMW Life Preservation System' : a considerable number of carefully planned inaividual measures which complement each other in a log ical and sequential way.
1. Collapsible, impact-absorbing front and rear sections. 2. The bonnet buckles upwards in a pre-determined manner, absorbs impact forces and does not damage the windscreen. 3. Specially designed universal joint tunnel and rigid bulkhead : the engine and transmission cannot penetrate the passenger compartment. 4. Doors with safety locks. 5. Three-point seat belts and height-
adjustable head restraints at the front. 6. Safety steering system, steering wheel with large padded central boss. 7. Instrument panel layout progressively impact-absorbing and systematically padded. The perfect safety of a BMW cannotbe cheap. But even the most expensive safety measure is cheap compared with )'Our life. -
The BMW 2002. A unique combination of the car you really want and the car you really need. There is an obsolescence built into most cars - and most particularly small, practical fam ily sedans - that has nothing to do with the way they 're built. It's called bored om. And it has to do with the w ay they drive . Most cars simp ly are not built to perform in such a way that driving becomes an end .- not merely a means of getting somewhere. The BMW 2002, on the other hand, is. If a single generalization could be made to describe all BMWs, it would be that each is a unique combination not only of the refined luxury you'd expect in a costly European car, but also of the extraordinary performance you'd expect on ly in a sports car. In a time when the concept of the automobi le has taken many irrelevant side roads, BMWs are built to be finely tuned machines. A unique harmony, if you will , of performance, safety and comfort. In an age of mass produced status symbols, marketing wizardry and styling breakthroughs, the engineers at the Bavarian Motor Works , in Munich, Germany, concentrate on bu ilding the best driving machines it is physically and technically possib le to bui ld. And the resu lt? Perhaps Motor Trend magazine p ut it most succinctly when they wrote, "The reaction to a BMW is always the same. The first time driver takes the wheel and
after a few miles no other automobile like this will ever be quite as good again". St):'.ling, functional not frivolous. The eng ineers at the Bavarian Motor Works did not invent the phrase, "form follows function". But, as Motor Trend magazine put it, "Among all the world 's automakers, BMW is perhaps the foremost practitioner of the philosophy". There is nothing on a BMW that does not contribute in some way to performance,
safety, or comfort. No concession to passing fads or fleeting fashions. Its shape is c lassic, uncompl icated, and aerodynamically sound. Its be lt line low, to bring down the center of gravity and provide an astonishing amount
of visibility in all directions. In front , a matt-black kidney shaped grill, characteristic of all BMWs. And in the rear, an oversi zed four section tail lighting system that makes the 2002 extremely visible at great distances. Construction, Qainstaking. The BMW is not produced on a typical assembly line. In fact, it takes as long as three full days to complete a single car. Each car goes through an arduous process of painting, hand examination, sanding
and repainting. Not just once, but as many times as is necessary to arrive at a perfect end result.
The cockpit, designed for total control. Inside the BMW 2002, you will find no simulated wood tri m and no plastic replicas o f Edwardian crests. The design of the cockpit of the 2002 is the end result of extensive biomechanical simulation testing. All controls are within easy reach.

If your realm of experience has been confined to conventional domestic sedans, this feeling will be new to you. But, be assured, you are not imagining it. It is, in fact, one of the things BMWs are most famous for. In Germany, it's called " speedfeel'' - the feeling that the cockpit is a calm eye in the center of the hurricane. Part of the explanation for this phenomenon lies inside the car itself. While the interior of the average car is decorated by sty1ists, the interior of a BMW is designed by engineers. Careful study has been made of the interaction between seat location, visual position, steering wheel , pedals, and controls.
Consequently, you will find nothing placed in-or on - a BMW merely for the sake of opulence- but totally engineered to prevent driver fatigue and make human driving error easily and safely correctable. All seats have an orthopedically molded shape that provides firm lateral support in tight, high speed curves. All individual seats are fully adjustable with reclining back supports. All instruments and controls are perfectly and precisely positioned. What's more, the interior of the 2002 has been designed to make the maximum use of space. It does not make a mockery of the word "sedan". While on the outside it is considerably smaller than conventional domestic sedans actually the ideal city car - on the inside there's no sacrifice of room. No cramping of
knees. No squashing of heads. And in the trunk, where small cars are usually smallest, there's sufficient space for more than a modest amount of luggage, golf clubs, and what have you. Extras: The following extras (available at additional charge) will allow you to equip your BMW 2002 according to your individual preferences - to add an accent here and there -without changing the basic character or functionality of the automobile. Automatic transmission. Limited slip differential. Tinted glass all around. Air-conditioning unit with tinted glass all around. Radios of various types. Tachometer. Steelsunroof: manual or electrically operated. Metallic paint. Light metal rims. Torsion bar stabilizer.

Efficient power, unexcelled. What is it that makes a car so exceptional that - for seven years runn ing - the readers of Car & Driver magazine name it " The Best Sports Sedan in the World "?
And nowhere is this priceless cache of engineering intel ligence more in evidence than 13t the heart of the 2002 : Its utterly sophisticated, fourcylinder, two-liter, triple-hem i-

To BMW enthusiasts, praise such as this is taken for granted. If the Bavarian Motor Works is known for anything, it is superb, innovative engineering. Eng ineering that somehow manages to combine the seem ingly incompatible: performance and economy. In fact, the BMW 2002 is an end result of voluminous amounts of technical and physical research - countless hours on the great racing circuits of the world - and over a half-century of experience in bu ild ing some of the finest powerplants ever built.

So complete and so efficient thatthe engine not only produces a very impressive 96 SAE net horsepower from a mere 121.3 cu. in. capac ity, but produces it with exceed ing ly low em issions and exceedingly high fuel economy. Further, an overhead camshaft, inclined valves, five main bearings and eight balance weights all combine to give the 2002 a capacity for smooth, reliable turbine-like performance that's totally BMW. And totally unlike any four-cylinder car you've ever owned or driven. BMW utilizes modern technology for waste gas purification. The engine of the BMW 2002 is equipped with a Thermo-Reactor with controlled air injection that fu rther reduces the HC/CO content in the exhaust gas by after burning under fresh air injection. Road holding, uncanny.:.. If you've become accustomed to the leaning and swaying one experiences in the average car, you'll find the legendary road holding capabilities of the 2002 more than a bit reassuring. The suspension is fully independent on al I four wheels. (McPherson struts and coil springs in front, sem i-trail ing arms and coil springs in back.) And this, combined with a multijointed rear axle, allows If the engine is the heart of Thechassisofthe BMW2002 each wheel to adapt itself instantly to every driving and an automobile, then the chasis generally acknowledged to road condition. sis - the suspension system be one of the finest ever built. is its conscience. Technical Data BMW 2002
Safety, more than just brute strength.
It's doubtful that there is a car made that 's made stronger than the BMW 2002. A steel safety cell that com p letely surrounds the passen ger compartme nt and computer determined "crush zones" all contribute to reducing inju ry to a mini mum, sho uld an accident p rove unavoidable. Yet there is another kind of safety, equally important, call ed "active safety". Simply, this refers to a car's abi lity to avoid accidents, not merely su rvive them . And this is where the 2002's extraordinary performance an d handli ng characteristics come into play. As does its dual twin-circu it, d isc/drum braking system that provides adequate braking power - actually above the legal ly prescribed limit - even if one of the two systems shou ld fail. The BMW life savin g.§ystem . 1. The BMW 2002 has deformable, energy absorbing front and rear sections. These sec-
tio ns are designed - by computer - to absorb impact energy by buckl ing or folding up, leaving the passenger compartment untouched. 2. A ll doors have been rein forced by additional struts. 3. The passenger compartment is resistant against rollover deformation because of its unique front and rear roof re inforcement. 4. The hood is designed to buckle - according to a p redetermined pattern - absorb impact energy and leave the windshield intact. 5. A speciall y designed ca rdan t unnel p lu s a rigid front partitio n w ill prevent the engine from being driven back into the passenger compartment upon frontal impact. 6. Safety locks keep the doors closed during impact, yet permit subseq uent open ing. 7. The bumpers are braced against sturdy hydraulic shock absorbers, eli minating the possibility of damage to the car in frontal collis ions of up to five mil es per hour.
Service, as efficient and reliable as the car itself. BMW owners can now get rapid routine servicing, perfect engine . tuning, and p inpoint accuracy in t he diagnosis of possibl e problems. Because all BMW automobil es are equi pped with a special electronic contact. As a resu lt, at BMW electronic centers, regu lar inspections have never been quicker, nor t rouble spotting more precise. BMW service and orig inal spare parts are available coast to coast in the United States and in over 100 countries around the wo rld.
