In Transkriptionen ftir Orgel bzw.
PREFACE johann Sebastian Bach's cycle of three sonatas and three partitas for unaccompanied violin represents an uncontested point of culmination in western music for the violin. The pieces set new standards both in instrumental performance and compositional technique - standards that have lost none of their currency over the years. The extraordinary nature of these works was already recognized in the eighteenth century, although opinions differed as to their artistic significance. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach regarded them primarily as evidence of his father's profound expertise in the idiomatic handling of string instruments, and hence as unique teaching material: "He had a complete grasp of the possibilities of every member of the violin fam-
ily. This is abundantly evident in his solos for violin and cello without bass. One of the greatest violinists once told me that he had never seen anything more perfectly suited for becoming a good violinist, and knew of nothing better to recommend to willing learners, than the aforementioned solos for violin without bass."1 In contrast, Bach's pupil Johann Philipp Kirnberger emphasized the compositional achievement of these pieces. Kirnberger felt that the pinnacle of contrapuntal mastery lay in the art of omission: only a composer fully capable of displaying the intricate secrets of harmony and counterpoint in a work with a reduced number of parts could be said to have those secrets at his command. Accordingly, after explaining
three- and two-voice fugues in part 1 of his treatise Die Kunst des reinen Sstzes in der Musik (777I), Kirnberger turns to works for unaccompanied melody instrument: "It is even more difficult to write a simple melody, without any form of accompaniment, so harmoniously that it is impossible to add another voice without committing a mistake, quite apart from the fact that the added voice would be clumsy and barely singable. It was in this form that ]. S. Bach wrote, without any accompaniment whatsoever, six sonatas for the violin and another six for the violoncello."2 By reducing his compositional resources to the barest minimum, Bach set himself an extraordinary task:
to display the full harmonic and contrapuntal riches 1 Letter to fohann Nikolaus Forkel, end of

of his musical idiom, with no noticeable loss, on a melody instrument with a limited capacity for rendering chordal and contrapuntal textures. This is the general drift of a remark by Johann Friedrich Reichardt, who felt that the mastery manifest in the violin solos resided in Bach's ability to proceed with utmost freedom and assurance within his self-imposed fetters. In this light, Philipp Spitta's reference to the Chaconne of Partita no.2, which he called a "triumph of the spirit
over the material", is a fitting description of the entire monumental cycle. Bach, in his works for unaccompanied instrument, ventured into a medium which few composers had explored before him and whose possibilities had not even remotely been exploited to the full. Among his possible forebears, special importance attaches to the solo suites of ]ohann Paul von Westhoff, an important central German violinist who was a member of the Dresden court chapel from 7674 lo 1697 and a chamber secretary and musician at the Weimar court from 1699 until his death. Bach surely met him as a young man during his first Weimar appointment in 7703. By then Westhoff had already published a collection of twelve suites, entitled Erstes Dutzend Allemanden, Couranten, Sarabanden & Giguen Violino Solo sonder Passo Continuo auf die neueste Manier mit 2.3. €t 4. Sayten (7682), and another volume of six suites in 1696. The first collection, published under his own imprint, is now lost, but two copies of the second survive. They reveal that although Westhoff's suites bore hardly any stylistic resemblance to Bach's works, both have the common goal of transferring a polyphonic texture to an unaccompanied violin while adhering to the rules of strict counterpoint, thereby elevating this species of composition to the realm of high art. According to an annotation on the title page of the autograph fair copy, Bach completed his cycle in 1220. Nothing is known of his reasons for composing it, nor do we know who may have commissioned it or borne its dedication. The cycle has occasionally been mentioned in connection with the Dresden concertmaster |ohann Georg Pisendel, who was personally acquainted with Bach from 1710. However, we have no way of knowing whether the works were intended for Pisendel, or indeed whether he was aware of them at all. Remarkably, the autograph of the violin solos is marked "Llbro Primo", perhaps implying that Bach

the retinue of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cothen.7 Although this possibility cannot be dismissed, paper of the same type can also be found in Leipzig archival materials dating roughly frorn 7720, implying that it was in widespread use throughout central Germany. Moreover, Bach also used |oachimsthal paper types to write out other works from his Cothen period. In 7977, Bach's autograph entered the holdings of the Berlin Royal Library from the posthumous estate of Wilhelm Rust, who probably obtained it from an unknown private collection in or around 1890. The only concrete evidence for the manuscript's early provenance is an ownership mark written on the flyleaf: "Louisa Bach I Btickeburg I 1842" . This is a reference to Christina Louisa Bach (1762-1852), a daughter of Bach's next-to-last son |ohann Christoph Friedrich (7732-7795), who was a court musician and concertmaster in Biickeburg from 7749 untilhis death. We may assume that the autograph entered the possession of the "Btickeburg Bach" when j. S. Bach's personal effects were dispersed after his death. However, the year cited in his daughter's ownership-mark may imply that she only obtained possession of it at this later date, in which case the manuscript was returned to the family after being held, perhaps temporarily, by a non-relative. Bach's autograph has become well-known through several facsimile editions. One of the most beautiful of all his autograph scores, it is remarkable for the painstaking accuracy of its musical text, particularly with regard to articulation. As a result, it poses hardly any questions for a modern scholarly-critical edition. SouncE B (Berlin Staatsbibliothek, Stiftung PreuGischer Kulturbesitz, Mus. ms. Bach P 268). Copyist's manuscript in the hand of Anna Magdalena Bach, pre-
pared in or around 7727-28, with additions by the Brunswick violinist Georg Heinrich Ludwig Schwanberg.8 This source was originally handed down in conjunction with a copy of the suites for unaccompanied cello, likewise in the hand of A. M. Bach (today Mus. ms. Bach P. 269). A comparison with the autograph clearly reveals that A. M. Bach's copy, which was apparently intended from the very outset for Schwanberg, was prepared directly from her husband's autograph fair copy, Source A. from the first-half of the eighteenth century (plus several later emendations) and a late eighteenth-century copy of BWV 1006 in a different hand. This source was owned by Georg Poelchau and entered the holdings of the Berlin Royal Library as part of the Poelchau Collection in 1841. According to a frequently quoted note at the bottom of the first page of music, Poelchau discovered the manuscript in 1814 "in the posthumous effects of the pianist Palschau in St. Petersburg, buried among old paper intended for the butter-shop". Nothing is known about the manuscript's early history. Since johann Gottfried Wilhelm Palschau apparently purchased written and printed music from the Hamburg music dealer Johann Christoph Westphal, it is conceivable that Source C was formerly a master copy from Westphal's establishment. This supposition is strengthened by an advertisement of 7784, which lists "Six Sonatas and Fugues for Violin Alone" by i.S. Bach under the heading of "Handwritten Violin Solos".e However, as the entry lacks the price indication otherwise typical of Westphal's manuscripts, the attribution must remain conjectural. On Polchau's authority, the earlier part of the manuscript was long thought (e.g. by Spitta and the Old Bach Edition) to be a Bach autograph. In reality, however, fascicles 1 to 5 are in the hand of an otherwise unknowrr and unidentifiable copyist who apparently belonged to Bach's close circle. The identity of this copyist should be sought primarily among accomplished violinists. One possibility is Georg Gottfried Wagner (1698-1756), a Bach pupil of whom johann Gottfried Walther reported that "he cultivated, in addition to the keyboard and other instruments, especially the violin, which he continued to play thereafter during his studies of theology at the university of that town".ro Wagner had been enrolled at the Leipzig Thomasschule frorn 7772 to 1779, during which period he received instruction from ]ohann Kuhnau. Various documents inform us that he took a leading part as a violinist in Bach's church music performances from 7723 lo 1726.1r However, the identification of the handwriting in the manuscript is hindered by the fact that few textual documents and no musical documents survive in Wagner's hand, whereas Source C

with some high passages written in the tenor clef. This manuscript entered the Royal Library in Berlin in 1865 as a gift from Count von Stosch. The works are arranged for cello without any substantive changes
in the musical text, which apparently derives from the first edition published by Simrock in 1802. SouncE L (Berlin Staatsbibliothek, Stiftung Preu8ischer Kultutbesilz, Poet. mus. Ms.31,). Manuscript copy of the G minor Sonata (BWV 1001) prepared in 7723 by ]ohann Andreas Kuhnau, apparently directly from the autograph. The precise date of this manuscript results from the fact that Kuhnau used the earlier form of the soprano clef when copying out the first movement.2r The last occurrence of this clef is found in his parts for Bach's first annual cycle of cantatas, namely, in Cantata BWV 767 for the Feast
john, which was performed on 24lune 7723. Movements 2 to 4 employ the more recent form of the soprano clef, first documented in 2 july 1723 in the original set of parts for Cantata BWV 747. Viewed in this light, Kuhnau's copy of the G minor Sonata must therefore have originated in late june or early july L723, assuming that the copying work did not suffer any lengthy interruptions.22 It is uncertain whether Kuhnau prepared this copy for his own use or on order from Bach for delivery to an interested party. The
of
source entered the possessions of the manuscript collector Franz Hauser in 1833 via the Oelsnitz cantor ]ohann Gottlob Schuster. Hauser then made it available to the publishing house of C. F. Peters.23 After the death of the owner of the publishing house, Carl Cott-
helf Siegmund Bohme (1785-1855), it was acquired by the Leipzig City Library along with other valuable Bach sources. There the manuscript was made part of the Politz Collection (the city's music collection) although it was in fact never owned by Carl Heinrich Ludwig P olitz (1772-1838).21 Peter Wollny (translated by
Apart from the title of the work, all editorial additions are indicated as such: letters by italics, slurs by broken lines, and other signs by smaller print. All alphabetical markings taken from the source (f, p, etc.) therefore appear in normal type. Accidentals have been placed in accordance with modern conventions. Further accidentals supplied by the editor at his discretion (i. e. those not rendered necessary by the application of modern rules) appear in small print.

Both types of sixteenth-note described by Diirr are found side by side in this manuscript. However, Kuhnau's regular deviation to the modern form of tail, though not documented until much later in his cantata parts, was probably necessitated by the compositional fabric of the work copied.

page of music contains a reference to the "Hauser Catalog, No. 404". This annotation was probably entered by Ferdinand August Roitzsch, who has been identified as Peters's "first reader". It refers to a thematic catalogue of Bach's instrumental music that Hauser presented to the publishers and that served somewhat as a forerunner to the "Schmieder Catalogue". 24 Further details and background information on the provenance of this manuscript can be found in Karen Lehmann: "Bachiana unter 'Tabak & Cigaretten': Die Bach-Sammlung des Leipziger Verlages C.
